Better still camera than my $400 Olympus

As others have noted, this little unit falls a little short when compared to a MiniDV camcorder. Sound quality is very modest, and the video quality has more artifacts that you expect from a MiniDV unit. Still, it's so tiny, and handy to shoot with, you'll likely catch a shot you'd miss with your bigger camcorder, as you left it back home.

The amazing part is the still camera. Fairly quick time to shot, and very respectable image quality. It actually does better in low light than my pricey Olympus. The teeny flash has more output that you might expect too.

Great little camera/video camcorder

I own this camera and have to say it is a very good with stills and video. It doesn't compare with a 3CCD camera or even to a mid-grade MiniDV camera but the portability and ease of use is fantastic! This unit can easily fit in your pocket/purse and within seconds can be turned on to capture video. I cannot do this with my regular MiniDV camera as it is too big to haul around. In low-light the unit performs okay but not crystal clear. I am able to easily capture Christmas lights, etc. with the unit @ night time. There are add-on lights you can purchase. If you are into archiving video, such as converting footage to DVD, the MP4 video codec it uses allows for easy editing; only if your video editing program supports MP4 format (I use VideoStudio 10). Most important is that when you convert your video to DVD the quality is still very good for viewing on a TV. I had tried Aipteks, Samsumg, etc. but always during DVD conversion the video quality degraded substantially. Not with this unit. When converting remember – MP4 to AVI then to DVD.

There is the C6 model to always consider. I choose this one instead since the difference in price between the two models doesn't justify.

One note, if purchasing this unit, make sure you have no bad pixels on the CCD sensor. A simple test is to put the lenses cap on and take a picture. Then examine the picture on your computer screen and look for any visible white or pink dots- hint boost zoom up to 300%. Google this topic if you have any concerns.
Cheers,

This camcorder is great

This is a great camera and camcorder. The daytime pictures and mp4 clips come out good and is comparable to the more expensive Sony. Nighttime/indoor pictures are okay. The MP4 clips indoor and at night is good enough for TV viewing unless you are looking for high def stuff which will run your at least a thousand bucks at this time.

If you want a camcorder that captures to a memory card instead of DVD or tapes, then this is the one with an affordable price and quality. The size is small enough to slip into your pocket so you don't need to carry a camcorder bag around with you all the time.

Rating :

Best camcorder at this price point

Purchased this camera to replace my old digital camcorder. Still picture quality is above average which is a bonus since you don't need to carry both a camcorder and still image camera on trips. The 4 megapixel shots should be just right for most casual photographers. Higher resolution just makes it harder to manage and share photos since the picture files become too large to email and don't really add anything in terms of quality to anything smaller than a 5X7 print. Great video performance except in low light conditions. When capturing video in low light, the color fades and turns brownish. Other than that, performance far exceeds what you would expect for the price.

Where this camera excels is in value. What most people don't realize is your true cost doesn't stop at what you pay for the camera. For my first camcorder (which was also a Sanyo), I had to purchase an extra high capacity battery for about $40. The standard battery lasted only about 45 minutes and the extended battery lasted about 90 minutes. Plus, countless mini DV tapes which run anywhere from $5-7 each or more for 60 minutes of recording time. With the xActi, I was able to find 2 extra batteries online for $30 (for a total recording time of 3 hours), plus cheap and readily available 2Gb SD cards for $15 each (each card can hold 2 hours of video or over a thousand stills). So not only do you get a great value with the camera, the add-ons are reasonably priced, and reusable for the life of the camera. Total investment was under $300 which you would be hard pressed to beat with any other digital camcorder on the market if you included the accessories and tapes.

Picture this....you go on vacation overseas with a full-sized camera bag. In the bag you have your camcorder, still camera, tapes, film or memory media, chargers, and anything else you need to take video and stills. All this probably weighs at least a few pounds, plus the headache of packing it with your luggage or carrying it on a plane and to your sightseeing destinations. Or, you can carry the xActi, plus batteries and extra memory all in your purse or pocket. Travel light and be ready to take the picture at right moment.

So if you fall into the 99% of casual shooters out there, this is definitely the camera to buy. First rule of technology, unless you have money to burn, never buy the "cutting edge" products. You'll pay through the nose and it will be half the price you paid for it within a year or two. For convenience, ease of use, features, and total investment cost, you can't go wrong with this camera.

Impressive features but buggy

This unit has a very impressive feature set. It's one of only two units I could find with both Bluetooth handsfree calling and backup camera video input... the other is the Pioneer F500BT. I gave this unit a try even though the reviews were very hit-and-miss. So far, it's lived up to the reviews.

When it works properly, it works well. 3D view and voice prompts are comfortable to see and hear. Backup camera works as advertised once camera is installed properly. Bluetooth call volume is a bit low, but acceptable. FM transmitter is weak, but my local airwaves are fairly crowded. If there were no bugs, I'd be thrilled.

That said, there are bugs a plenty. About 1/4 of the time SOMETHING goes wrong. Usually it's in the form of the unit locking up while doing the initial routing after a destination is input. A reset usually fixes the problem, but it's a big annoyance due mainly to the 2-3 minutes required to re-acquire satellite signal. Other times certain screens won't overlay properly on the map and, most strangely, sometimes voice prompts are spoken backwards ("Street Main on right turn" instead of "Turn right on Main Street").

The unit appears to run a custom UI over WinCE 5.0, so I'm hoping there's some hope for hacking and installing different software, but the memory is internal so it'll take a bit more effort than some WinCE based units where the software is on an SD card.

I'm going to send this back to Sanyo to see if they can service it under warranty, but if not I may be going after the Pioneer F500BT now that it's dropped drastically in price.

Cool features, poor performance....

Now, I am not hard on electronics at all. This product was good, when it worked. The FM transmitter was weak and the bluetooth was terrible, but i never used those much. The navigation was okay, but it couldn't find a lot of places, even though they were in older parts of Austin, TX. My roommate and I both bought this model on the same day. When we got them home, mine did not work at all. It would start up, and then it would shut off. I went back to the store and returned it for another. (every batch of products that goes out has a few bad ones...that's just expected). My second one worked just fine, except for the few things mentioned above. However, 3 months of use later, it never gets past the start up screen. I started freezing up and locking. I have been having issues getting Sanyo to repair the item on there tab, even I have only had the item 4 months at this point. About a week ago, my roommates GPS did the exact same thing. It has an error message pop up about the "contacts.exe" program having an error, and then it never gets past the start up screen. Now, excluding the first one that I retured that first day, that is two of the SAME GPS units, in the SAME HOUSEHOLD, and that doesn't scream quality in my eyes. I am sure that there are plenty of people out there who haven't had any issues with this model, but I am also fairly certain that there are plenty that have. I can say with honesty, that the units were not mistreated, not left out in direct sunlight or extreme heat (as I learned that lesson early on with an older Garmin). Still, my roommate and I are both out $200, having to argue with Sanyo, and neither of us has a GPS. Overall, I would have to say that I would not recommend this product. Nothing against Sanyo, as I do own a sanyo TV that has worked great for 5 years now, but this particular unit is one that I would recommend staying away from.

Outstanding Product

This unit does everything it says it should. I've had no issues and have owned it since January, 2009. So many great features!

Terrible GPS, who cares about the rest?

After our beloved garmin was stolen we picked up the Sanyo. It had an impressive list of features for a great price at the time (Nov 2008). While it does have many features listed we bought it as a GPS and that is all we cared about.

Unfortunately, even compared to our 3 year old Garmin this thing was a disaster. Problems encountered:

1. Took a long time to acquire satellites.

1. Couldn't find streets even in older parts of the city.

2. Unintuitive entry for addresses. Would not find the address you were looking for unless you used the exact format it had stored. For instance 115 South Street would not show up unless you put in 115 S. Street. Seriously? Even then sometimes trying all different permutations would not pull up the address.

3. Cross streets would not show up on the map as you drove. The Garmin had a great layout where you always knew what street was coming up. This thing sometimes had the name of the street off the viewable screen. Not helpful.

4. Inefficient routing. Even with all roads enabled it would tell us to take a long route totally out of our way instead of the HIGHWAY that went striaght to our destination.

5. Broke. Yep, after 10 months the car charger broke. Two months later the unit itself would shut off as soon as it gave you the first direction. Has not worked since, just outside of warranty, how nice.

We basically hated this thing from the moment we got it, but we thought it was just growing pains and we would get accustomed to it. Nope, we hated it until it died. We eventually started gettting Google map directions before getting in the car to make sure the stupid thing wasn't sending us 50 miles out of our way.

If you buy this thing you are stupid, like us.

Sanyo NVM-4370

Sanyo Easy Street NVM-4370 4.3'' Portable GPS Navigator with FM Transmitter and Text-to-Speech

Keep shopping and don't buy this unit. The features look good, but the functionality is not. It routes poorly, and it often does not recover when you deviate from the suggested route. What good is it when it acts like this.

I will consider it a loss and go buy something that works. I would give it zero stars if I could.

Sanyo Xacti HD1 - POJ

I bought this camera one year ago just prior to one of my mountain climbing expeditions. I liked it for the lightweight and the HD performance. I bouth it from a shop in San Francisco and paid over $900.

I think this was the worst product I have ever purchased.

The camera did not make me any movie in the mountains (in any mountains, not just this one). Once at high altitude I felt so frustrated that almost threw it down from 15,000 ft. The snow in the high mountains and the strong sun completely incapacitate the camera, even at the lowest sensitivity and with strong ND filter. Because of the strong sun the LCD display is completely invisible to the operator, so I just shot and hoped that the camera will record something. The result is that I do not have any movie or any picture from the climbs. Everything became white during the day.

The camera is not recording anything sensible in the evenings either. It is not possible to accomodate to the contrast. Everything gets white or completely black.

Well, you may think that I am unexperienced photographer, but I have over 20 year experience on Photography. This is the worst I ever had.

I thought that al least I have e good camera for the normal conditions in the city. Another disapointment! First, before you can record any movie you have to spend several minutes to select the right settings. The camera is unfriendly and clumsy. There is no auto mode. Second, the HD feature is a pure BS. Any Canon camera, even the normal still camera makes better movies that this one. Xacti is ways too slow to adjust to the changing light conditions as you move the camera.

Well, you may think that at least it has 10Mp resolution when used as a still camera. Hah!!! The pictures you get with this camera are as good as the pictures you get with your cellphone. I haven't made any good still picture with this camera.

If you think that this is bad enough, wait for the rest. The reliability of this "HD thing" is really the worst. As I was making shots the camera shut down and could not be started anymore. I called Sanyo and they told me, that the camera is NOT under warranty (the warranty is only 90 days!!!). You have to send it somewhere to IL to a private repair shop. You pay for shipment, pay for evaluation, pay for the repair, pay for the shipment back. Totally I paid about $200. The evaluation showed that the camera has a burnt PCB. From WHAT? From a 3.7V 1A battery? The repair shop waited 3 weeks for Sanyo to send them only the spare part. Anyway, it took me over a month to get it back.

It is already 11 months since I have this camera and I am happy to dispose it.

I would rate this product zero stars, but the systems requires me to asign at least one star.

Worth every penny

I did quite a bit of research on the Sanyo Xacti and other waterproof digital video cameras. The choice was between the Sanyo, Olympus or the Pentax Optio.
I chose the Sanyo for its style, design and ease of operation.
I took the camera to Miami Beach and had a blast with it. I was not let down.
I had no problem hanging on to the Xacti even when knocked over by a wave. The quality of the video is suberb. The still images are razor sharp. The camera should be used on the highest quality setting for both still and video. I therefore suggest you buy the 4gb card.

The menu offers a large number of options for both video and still image.
Don't be intimidated by the size of the operators manual. Start with the 'Quick Start Guide' and gradually read about the other features.
The price of the camera varies from store to store. That should be your biggest problem with the purchase.

Sorry I bought this

I bought this camera some years ago at the local Fry's.
At the time it seemed a good idea.

Had I known then what I know now I'd have never bought this.

Main complaint is short battery life. 2nd main complaint is
FINDING A BATTERY that is OEM and not some fly by night battery.

Guess what? If you read the owners manual you see Sanyo recommends you do
NOT leave the battery in the unit. Fine. But if you follow that advice the
built in hour/date clock expires and you have to reset it EACH TIME YOU WANT
to use the camera and have that function useful.
If you do leave the battery in the unit whilst not using it, the battery will expire
in a few days or so despite being 'turned off'. I guess keeping the date clock running just
eats up a lot of power.

As of today I looked via Google and the only true OEM listing I could
find was here at Amazon. However it is out of stock.. of course.

Google till I'm blue in the face and all I can find is 'OEM compatible' batteries.

The menus system is clumsy and had I known how clumsy I'd have not bougght it.
The rocker button that is used for many menu functions is a real pain in the rear
for anyone with large hands. It is a major annoyance to be constantly accidentally rocking
the 4 way rocker the wrong direction. I'm sure it is fine for some woman with very slender
fingers but for a man with big hands it is a mess.

My advice to anyone researching digital cameras for is to buy one that does not
require the use of a proprietary battery type. Seek one that allows use of rechargable
generic AA or similar cells. You'll be far better off if your at the least concerned about
costs and availability of the batteries years later.

I'll never buy another camera from these guys again.
That aside, it does take decent photos as long as the light is BRIGHT. Dim to slightly dim conditions forget about it.

Sanyo Xacti HD2

This is a high quality camera that is not real easy to use. The docking station takes some effert to get a good connection, you just have to feel around until it is docked. The real disappointment is the software the camera linked with a touch of the button but after a week of trying I never did get a MP4 file to load into the computer. I was able load some files out of the camera with other software but not with the programs that came in the box. Where is their quality control? If the software had been of the same quality as the camera and the price had been $200.00 less, I would still have the camera.
