Sanyo Xacti HD1 - POJ
I bought this camera one year ago just prior to one of my mountain climbing expeditions. I liked it for the lightweight and the HD performance. I bouth it from a shop in San Francisco and paid over $900.
I think this was the worst product I have ever purchased.
The camera did not make me any movie in the mountains (in any mountains, not just this one). Once at high altitude I felt so frustrated that almost threw it down from 15,000 ft. The snow in the high mountains and the strong sun completely incapacitate the camera, even at the lowest sensitivity and with strong ND filter. Because of the strong sun the LCD display is completely invisible to the operator, so I just shot and hoped that the camera will record something. The result is that I do not have any movie or any picture from the climbs. Everything became white during the day.
The camera is not recording anything sensible in the evenings either. It is not possible to accomodate to the contrast. Everything gets white or completely black.
Well, you may think that I am unexperienced photographer, but I have over 20 year experience on Photography. This is the worst I ever had.
I thought that al least I have e good camera for the normal conditions in the city. Another disapointment! First, before you can record any movie you have to spend several minutes to select the right settings. The camera is unfriendly and clumsy. There is no auto mode. Second, the HD feature is a pure BS. Any Canon camera, even the normal still camera makes better movies that this one. Xacti is ways too slow to adjust to the changing light conditions as you move the camera.
Well, you may think that at least it has 10Mp resolution when used as a still camera. Hah!!! The pictures you get with this camera are as good as the pictures you get with your cellphone. I haven't made any good still picture with this camera.
If you think that this is bad enough, wait for the rest. The reliability of this "HD thing" is really the worst. As I was making shots the camera shut down and could not be started anymore. I called Sanyo and they told me, that the camera is NOT under warranty (the warranty is only 90 days!!!). You have to send it somewhere to IL to a private repair shop. You pay for shipment, pay for evaluation, pay for the repair, pay for the shipment back. Totally I paid about $200. The evaluation showed that the camera has a burnt PCB. From WHAT? From a 3.7V 1A battery? The repair shop waited 3 weeks for Sanyo to send them only the spare part. Anyway, it took me over a month to get it back.
It is already 11 months since I have this camera and I am happy to dispose it.
I would rate this product zero stars, but the systems requires me to asign at least one star.

Sanyo Xacti HD2
This is a high quality camera that is not real easy to use. The docking station takes some effert to get a good connection, you just have to feel around until it is docked. The real disappointment is the software the camera linked with a touch of the button but after a week of trying I never did get a MP4 file to load into the computer. I was able load some files out of the camera with other software but not with the programs that came in the box. Where is their quality control? If the software had been of the same quality as the camera and the price had been $200.00 less, I would still have the camera.

Sorry I bought this
I bought this camera some years ago at the local Fry's. At the time it seemed a good idea.
Had I known then what I know now I'd have never bought this.
Main complaint is short battery life. 2nd main complaint is FINDING A BATTERY that is OEM and not some fly by night battery.
Guess what? If you read the owners manual you see Sanyo recommends you do NOT leave the battery in the unit. Fine. But if you follow that advice the built in hour/date clock expires and you have to reset it EACH TIME YOU WANT to use the camera and have that function useful. If you do leave the battery in the unit whilst not using it, the battery will expire in a few days or so despite being 'turned off'. I guess keeping the date clock running just eats up a lot of power.
As of today I looked via Google and the only true OEM listing I could find was here at Amazon. However it is out of stock.. of course.
Google till I'm blue in the face and all I can find is 'OEM compatible' batteries.
The menus system is clumsy and had I known how clumsy I'd have not bougght it. The rocker button that is used for many menu functions is a real pain in the rear for anyone with large hands. It is a major annoyance to be constantly accidentally rocking the 4 way rocker the wrong direction. I'm sure it is fine for some woman with very slender fingers but for a man with big hands it is a mess.
My advice to anyone researching digital cameras for is to buy one that does not require the use of a proprietary battery type. Seek one that allows use of rechargable generic AA or similar cells. You'll be far better off if your at the least concerned about costs and availability of the batteries years later.
I'll never buy another camera from these guys again. That aside, it does take decent photos as long as the light is BRIGHT. Dim to slightly dim conditions forget about it.

Worth every penny
I did quite a bit of research on the Sanyo Xacti and other waterproof digital video cameras. The choice was between the Sanyo, Olympus or the Pentax Optio. I chose the Sanyo for its style, design and ease of operation. I took the camera to Miami Beach and had a blast with it. I was not let down. I had no problem hanging on to the Xacti even when knocked over by a wave. The quality of the video is suberb. The still images are razor sharp. The camera should be used on the highest quality setting for both still and video. I therefore suggest you buy the 4gb card.
The menu offers a large number of options for both video and still image. Don't be intimidated by the size of the operators manual. Start with the 'Quick Start Guide' and gradually read about the other features. The price of the camera varies from store to store. That should be your biggest problem with the purchase.

SX20 A Good Camera for the Price
Overall a good camera. For the price, you get a lot of camera. It's not perfect, but it will take some excellent pictutes once you know how to use it and get around some of it's quirks.
Pros * Has lot of features. * Light weight * 20 X Zoom. Really lets yo get close. The 4 X digital gets you closer * 720p Video. With 8 GB SD Card, I can get over an hour of video * Stabilization is better than I had with Canon S10 * Excellent battery life with rechargeable batteries. Energizer has good bateries that charge in 15 min * AA battery size which you can buy anywhere vs a proprietary battery which is more expensive. * 12 M pixel good for cropping * Fairly fast lens so it takes decent low light pictures if it focuses OK.
Cons * No Manual but I printed it out double sided with 2 pages on a side = 45 sheets of paper. * As others mention focus in low light is tough. Sometimes you have to go to manual focus. * It has so many features; you need to study the manual to take advantage of all the bells and whistles. * While taking video, at times loses focus and correct exposure. * My view finder doesn't do a good job in displaying the picture I took. Sometimes looks over exposed

Slightly disappointing
I recently purchased a Rebel T1i for my girlfriend and even with that SLR experience under her belt she had a difficult time setting this camera up to take decent quick pictures for my sister. I love Canon products but I am sorely disappointed with this one. This was supposed to be a step up from a point and shoot and a step down from an SLR but I would much rather use my point and shoot than this much more expensive camera. It does take very good pictures with just the right setting but only about 1 in 7 pictures seemed to turn out well. On the plus side I ordered 2 day shipping but it came in about 5. Without me contacting anyone I received a refund for the entire shipping fee.

Great mid-size camera
PROS: Great compromise between compact and SLR. Takes great pictures in most light conditions. Awesome zoom capabilities. Image stabilization. Very good HD video. Lots of "scene" settings. Easy to use picture controls and menus. Articulating LCD screen. Most of the controls of an SLR without the size and inconvenience of multiple lenses.
CONS: Terrible battery life (especially when using LCD screen). Disappointing lower light pictures without tripod.
I have owned this camera for about 2 months now and used it on a 5 week vacation to New Zealand and Australia. It does everything I need and more. It is a great compromise between a compact camera and a full SLR. It generally takes amazing photos, though, like other reviews, I found it doesn't do as well in low light situations without a tripod. The main reason I bought this camera was the 20x zoom, which is the equivalent to a 560mm lens. With the image stabilization components of the camera, perfectly focused shots at full zoom can be taken without a tripod. On the flip side, it takes very good macro photos as well. The video on this camera is incredible. It takes 720p HD video, and the results look really good on my TV considering this is a picture camera and not a video camera. It has a wide variety of "scene" settings and very easy to use picture controls. It has most of the controls found on a big expensive SLR, without dealing with the size and extra lenses. One big issue, though is battery life. This camera is a battery hog, especially with the LCD screen in use. Get rechargeable batteries!! That said, I love the articulating LCD view screen. It comes in handy for taking pictures when you can't look through the viewfinder and for reviewing pictures.
FYI: It fits perfectly into a Lowepro Edit 110 camera case. This was the smallest case I could find that the camera fits into while allowing for room for several extra sets of batteries, media cards, and the included lens hood. If you want to carry more accessories, though, you will need a bigger case.

Learning this jewel will be an Odyssey--but so far so good.
This is a shallow review because I have only had the camera a few weeks, but so far no disappointments. It's so complex that it will take awhile to really learn to use it, but so far it's as advertised. I was relieved to see that it not only incorporates one of the best super-long telephotos (20X), it retains the super-macro closeup feature. I may add to this review later when I'm more knowledgeable--but as of now I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. I've found Canon to be tops in digital photography.

Does It All and Does It Mostly GREAT!
20x optical, image stabilized zoom that you can use while filming. 720P HD video with great sound. Hot Shoe for adding a flash for low light. Ability to use AA rechargeable batteries-don't have to wait for charging another set or purchase expensive 2nd proprietary. 2.5" articulating display and electronic viewfinder Wide angle - scenic shots and great for group pics HDMI out connection. Ability to take a still shot while recording video. Lens will extend with lens cap on so it doesn't break if I forget it's on. Beautiful still shots in good light. Full manual mode ability as well as point and shoot - increases ability to take quality pictures as you learn
I moved up from an olympus sp-500 which I loved except for 3 things. First, I could not zoom more than half way without blurring as it had no image stabilization. Secondly, the video was very poor which was expected at the time of purchase. Last, but not least the new canon has wide angle compared to the old olympus.
I find that I take videos often now that I don't have to spend extra money for a dedicated camcorder plus have to drag it around with me. My olympus only allowed zoom to 5x without shaking, now I can zoom to 10x or more without shake. Also, the older superzooms did not allow zooming while in video mode. Zooming more than halfway requires good light and really bracing myself especially when subjects are moving. I will purchase a tripod to increase opportunities to take up to 20x zoom in those type situations. Also, I'm using automatic and scene modes so I have no idea what the full capabilities are in manual mode. I would expect that if you know how to adjust settings, it would greatly increase camera's abilities. Still pictures taken in good light are excellent even without the superfine or raw modes but I still wish I had superfine. Great macro mode shots. Pictures taken in low light do show more noise than my older camera. At least, when I look at an actual sized picture on my computer screen, it either shows some kind of slight graining or it looks soft (noise reduction?). Again, manual settings might make a world of difference. I wonder if it is because they added those extra megapixels on the small sensor that causes it like one reads about online. If so, I sure wish they had not done that as this would be the PERFECT camera otherwise. Of course, then I would never need to upgrade unless the camera actually broke. I am planning on buying a dedicated flash to see if that makes a difference in low light but using onboard flash works. Also, action shots are sometimes good, but sometimes not the best but that's to be expected. There is a lady on the reviews that added links to her landscape images and they really show you what beautiful pictures this camera takes in good light. I mean they are stunning. I have not learned how to apply manual settings so I'm sure that would make a lot of difference in image quality and that is another benefit of this camera is that it allows you to manually change the settings as you learn how.
I had a hard time between this and the pana FZ-35 but the articulating screen, movie file type, battery type, and the odd joystick on the panasonic were the deciding factors. Plus, I didn't like how it felt in my hands. As far as low light pictures, my research tells me that all the small sensor ultrazooms will have some difficulty unless you know how to adjust settings to compensate for it. If you don't mind using flash, it doesn't matter anyway.
We really love our new camera and have been using it since Sept 2009. I am upset that all the camera makers have chosen not to include the more detailed manuals as that means I have to print out 185 pages but that does not detract from how great the camera is. I'm having fun editing my movies from my all around, does it all, and does it mostly great, canon sx20IS. Plus, I get to buy a dedicated flash and tripod to take full advantage of all the extra features and expand the capabilities of taking great shots in even more situations. Then, my new canon will be the "PERFECT" camera and I'll never need to upgrade. HA!

Works well, Great value,
I used this charger & included batteries while traveling in Europe over the summer, and it handled the 220v electricity there with no problems (only a plug adapter needed to fit the cord into the European power outlets). I also have been using it here in the USA for several months, and it's been fine. The batteries are high-quality and hold a charge well. Another nice feature is that the power cord is a regular AC cord, without a silly "wall wart" transformer on the end, so it fits into any outlet or power strip or extension cord, and both the cord and unit are lightweight and easy to pack.

Long lasting fast charging batteries.
I bought these with my Canon PowerShot Pro S3IS camera. So far they have worked very well. The Batteries keep there charge for a long time just sitting in the camera and will run the camera for a long time when freshly charged and being used. The Kodak brand batteries that I got with my Kodak EasyShare C533 don't last near as long as these do and take longer to charge and cost a lot more than these. I would recommend these over any other rechargeable batteries.
