cool camera

This camera is replacing a Canon Sureshot that is 10 yesrs old. This Nikon is a lot smaller and actually is much easier to use. The view finder is a full 3 inches which is a GREAT feature. The price could not be beat either and the color is, well, COOL! Picture quality is fine but I am still learning how to take pictures in differnt lighting. I hate to read manuals so I am learning as I go. Oh, and you do have to hold down the button 1/2way until it focuses then depress it all the way for a clear picture.

Poor quality control in production

I have been both a professional photographer and a photography instructor in my past life and generally love Nikon cameras. I currently use a Nikon D40X DSLR with great results. This camera (the Nikon Coolpix L20) has, in my opinion, quality control problems which originate at the factory (in China). I read the reviews before purchase but decided to buy one anyway. Took a cruise with the L20 as my only camera (I was on vacation - right?) My mistake - I should have tried out the camera before I left - It was pretty much useless. Out of 200 photos less than 30 were printable unless one was entering a creative art show. I believe from the reviews I have read that many if not most of the L20's work fine, but 10 -20% are not made well and the reviews back that up. Problems with my camera ranged from failure to read low light situations, to totally blurred photos in normal daylight. I don't hate the L20 in general - just the one I have. I am in the process of returning it to Amazon for refund. Next try will be an Olympus or a Canon.

THE worst camera

It is not even 3 months. The camera is already dead. We went for a trip to NYC and Boston. After returning, we realized that it took all blurred images...No memories of the trip at all. Now it says it cannot read the memory card. The memory card is good and I can read it from the computer. Waste of money. WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER NIKON PRODUCT.

Broke after 2 months.

I took less then 25 pictures with the camera and kept it in its on little pouch. Grabbed out one day and noticed a crack in the LCD screen, rendering it completely useless. Called up Nikon since i had a two year waranty and they told me it'll cost 120 dollars to fix. Yes, double the price I paid for it. Aside from the broken screen, the pictures where very blurry, and my LCD screen was very very grainy. Definitely not being another consumer level Nikon.

Good for the price

Good point and shoot starter camera, at under $100 you can't expect much but it does take very nice pictures. Great first camera!

Excellent camera

Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She took it out of the box, inserted the batteries and the memory card (that I purchased separately) and started taking pictures. Very easy to use, even for a 12 year old! Within minutes she was trying all of the features which were easy to figure out. Well made camera, which is typical for Nikon. The deep blue color is very "rich" looking.

Really Enjoy it

I bought this camera for my 8 year old daughter for Christmas since she is obsessed with taking pictures. It is so much better than my camera. The picture quality is great. Easy for an 8 year old to figure out without the directions. Takes video too which was a bonus for her.

Not so good

The picture quality is good. The only thing I disliked is it doesn't have a rechargeable battery. So one needs to use AA battery. This means on the long run we have to spend a lot for the battery

Digital Camera

Camera works well for its intended purpose. Mainly to take photos of items around the household and family and friends. Easy to use. Only complaint is camera is slow to take a picture so not sure this camera is designed for fast action events.

Capture and share your favorite memories with Nikon's new Coolpix L20 and its 10.0 effective megapixels, 3.6x zoom and a bright, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD screen. Motion Detection automatically detects subject movement and adjusts the shutter speed and ISO to compensate for camera shake and minimize image blur. The camera's Easy Auto Mode with Scene Auto Selector simplifies your picture-taking experience by letting camera automatically select the best setting to get great pictures. Nikon's Smart Portrait System combines four different technologies that will fix red-eye, detect faces, fire the shutter when your subject smiles and warn you if they blink, to get you great portraits.

Coolpix L20 Highlights:

10.0-megapixel resolution for stunning prints as large as 16 x 20 inches

3.6x optical Zoom-Nikkor glass lens gets you close to the action

Huge, bright 3.0-inch high-resolution LCD makes it easy to view and share pictures

Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and ISO settings to compensate for camera shake and subject movement

Adjusts up to ISO 1600 to keep shooting even in lower light

Easy Auto Mode with Scene Auto Selector simplifies your picture-taking experience by letting the camera automatically select the best setting to get great pictures

Nikon's Smart Portrait System:
* In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically fixes most instances of red-eye in the camera. You may never see red-eye again.
* Enhanced Face-Priority AF - Nikon's face-finding technology that automatically focuses on up to 12 faces.
* Smile Mode automatically releases the shutter when your subject smiles.
* Blink Warning displays a warning message, should the camera detect your subject has blinked.
* D-Lighting rescues dark or backlit images by improving brightness and detail where needed.

Disappointed

I am a fan of Nikon and love my D40x and thought I would like a small Nikon point and shoot for a recent trip where I did not want to risk damage to my DSLR. I was not happy with the experience. The Coolpix L20 is very difficult to use in anything but full auto. Low light exposure is grainy and very sensitive to movement. Shutter controls are menu driven and hard to get to in a short time situation. Overall versatility did not come close to my Kodak EasyShare V550 by any comparison. Camera has some problems finding focal point under many conditions and I found that (in my opinion) the camera is only useful on bright sunny days and even then the photos are sometimes out of sharp focus. I intend to return it and would not recommend it to anyone at a price of more than $30.
