Sanyo Vpc s1070 - run
bought this camera from walmart and the LCD crapped out on day 38. Walmart would not take it back, and indeed had no more of them in stock...Sanyo said it was warrentied for 30 days and it would be cheaper to buy another one. Tried contacting a live someone/anyone at Sanyo to no avail. Automatted Q&A only. I knew there was a reason I didnt like Sanyo.

I love it
I'm not the kind of person who wants the thousand dollar camera, so when I received this for xmas last year I used it everyday. Seemed like a normal camera, until a few months later I was messing with the settings and noticed it had a Professional setting right next to Auto. Since then this camera has gone everywhere with me and has not left Professional mode, unless I need to take a video here and there. Either way this camera is amazing on pro-mode even my mom who has a $3,500 Olympus with telescope lenses wants to borrow it because of how crystal clear the photos turn up. Sure it may take some time for the sensor to lock onto what you want but it's worth it for the quality this camera has. I have uploaded some photos in the customer gallery :)

Vibrant Stills, Acceptable Video In Outdoor Environment
At the time I received this camera, there were few waterproof digital camcorders on the market--but things have changed radically since then. There are a lot of cameras that take both underwater (that can go much deeper) and above water stills and video on the market today. I wanted this camera to take camping, so that I would have something I could use outside, even if it was raining, at water parks, in swimming pools, rafting, and tubing. I have used the camera underwater, but I'm always wary of the fact that it can't go too deep and that even dropping it in the deep end of a swimming pool may be enough to cause it to leak. If I were to buy a waterproof camera today, I most definitely would purchase something that could go deeper. Many of the new cameras on the market in this category can also take high res. video (including newer models by Sanyo).
The video quality if OK for standard definition. My Flip Ultra actually took better standard res. video than this camera can (particularly in low light. I am am very pleased with the still images that the camera produces in well lit, outdoor environments; and it takes standard and widescreen stills. Be warned, it does not do well in low lighting situations; if you think you will using it a lot to take videos indoors or at night I don't reccomend it (the images can be very noisey). Although the camera has a flash, there is no red eye reduction, so unfortunately in most of the stills I took in low lighting conditions my subjects often look like the children of Dracula. The flash range is also rather limited, so make sure to get close to your subjects. The flash works well for backlit subjects as a fill, though, and I frequently use it for that. I have also had problems when swapping out batteries to get the camera to power on again; though I am not certain if this is just a quirk of my camera or of all the E-2s.
The bottom line is that this is serviceable camera that works well for outside photography and wet weather conditions. If you want high defintion or something that can go into deeper water, definitely shop around.

Great take-everywhere camera
This is my 2nd Xacti Camera as my kids keep borrowing my other 6 mp Xacti videocam. We've used it underwater while vacationing in Hawaii; in Seattle on our Kayak trip; I've used it to take underwater shots of our kois (fish) in the backyard. What I like with this camera is it's pistol-grip design which is very suitable for underwater shots (couldn't fathom some are critical of this design). Overall, you get a pretty decent videos and 4X6 prints out of this camera. I own a Nikon D80 and a high-speed 35mm Casio (Exilim EX-F1) but I find myself relying more on my Xacti for ordinary pictorial needs.

excellent camara
It is an excellent camara...
The 8M pixel still pics is great. I have lots of pics with red eyes though, but I can live with that.
The 2 M pixel video works very good for day shots..
Night video comes out pixelated but I am still extremly happy with it..

Best Buy Ive Made In A Long Time!!
I bought this to go on a cruise and man was it a great idea. I take this thing everywhere. Its so small you dont even notice it in you pocket. You can pull it out and in 5sec you are ready to shot. My friend dont like hanging out with me now because I always have the cam out reminding they how dumb they look. I take it snowboarding all the time it works great. Some people complained about the bottons being hard to push but can even do it with my gloves on. Underwater quality is cool haven't gone under 2ft yet just stay close to surface but it will stay submerged with no probs I bring it kayaking all the time and it will sit in some water at the bottom of my bag and be fine. It is very durable it come with a case thats not bulky at all works well. I take it hiking and it take great pics even while you recording, its in my bag every day. So there has to be one down side, The low light quality isn't very good but I knew that when I bought it. I use this for all kinds of outdoor event and thats what it is for. Posting video or pics are a brezzzze. Ive owned this cam for six mounths and have used it tons and its still working great. Battery life is about an hour of but if bought tow more at only $12 bucks apiece online. The 8 gb sd card give you tons of memory til you dump it on you PC. Hope this review help you out peace.

Editorial Review :
At about 3.1 x 4.7 x 1.4 inches and about 8 ounces, this tiny camcorder is a perfect size and weight for the active tourist. The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 has a very significant edge over the others. It records video at 1280x720 resolution, perfect for 720p presentation on HDTV displays. It is also a digital-camera with 7 megapixel still image resolution. All images are stored on a SD or a SDHC Memory Card that helps account for the camera's compact size and minimal weight.

Low Battery Time
A good camcorder for outdoor use.
However, a full charged battery lasts only about 22 minutes for a continuous recording. You'd better get at least two backup batteries.

Bad compromise
I expected the video to be so-so and the pictures to be excellent. Both were miserable.

Needed repair; bad experience
After 9 months, the buttons on the camera stopped functioning. Contacted Sanyo and was referred to their Service Provider, Skokie TV.
Contacted Skokie and shipped my camera to them in early September. Hearing nothing after 2 weeks, I contacted Skokie and learned that diagnostics had found a faulty "control unit", which needed to be ordered from Sanyo.
After 2 more weeks and no news, I contacted Skokie again and was informed that the replacement unit arrived defective and was reordered from Sanyo.
After 2 more weeks, I contacted Skokie again and was advised that they were awaiting the replacement part.
Service and communication from Skokie are unacceptable. I have now waited 6 weeks and still do not know when I will get my camera back. My 16 months old baby is walking, talking, learning... and we are missing the capture moments for which our Sanyo was intended.
Although we love the camera, would caution buyers as to the defective control unit and after-market experience with Skokie.

Horrid! Don't waste your money, just get an HD1000!
To preface this lambasting, in all fairness, this camera -IS- quite adept at SD (Standard Definition). But the HD settings look like SD resized to 1440 pixels across. That's not HD in MY book, nor should it be advertised as such.
And it's for that reason that this camera has to rank as one of the worst electronics purchases I've ever made. The HD image quality is atrociously bad: anything in slight shadow or darker becomes deep DEEP black, highlights or anything close to a highlight becomes pure white, not to mention the super-pixelating compression. Completely worthless indoors, at night, or in anything approaching a low light situation. In bright daylight, I was able to manage a super-compressed blobish complexion on my subjects, with a framerate resembling about 15fps. A $600 FisherPrice camera. I was angry to say the least.
Frankly, I am a little surprised that this camera has received the glowing reviews it has on Amazon. It is for this reason that I kept the camera a little longer, fiddling with the settings, reading the manual all the way through, seeing if there was anything I was missing to boost the quality. In the end, it was all for naught. Perhaps I took receipt of a defective model, but all I know is that I returned the HD2, and I am now more than pleased with my HD1000. It's WELL worth the extra $40 if you want solid 720p image quality.

Sold It
After owning the HD2 for 6 months I sold it on eBay.
This is a tweener device - trying to be both a video camera and a digital still camera. I thought I was getting the best of both, but really the HD2 isn't great at either. Video and photo quality was fair - despite the 7.1 MP resolution, the picture quality wasn't as good as I had been getting from the 2MP Canon SD200 that it replaced. Sure I had more pixels, but subjectively (mostly - "these don't look as good as your old camera..." from the family) the colors didn't look as good and there was reasonably high noise. Also the "image stabilizer" used cropping so you lose field of view on the wide end (making the 39mm equiv. more like a 50mm), making this hard to use indoors.
But what ultimately got me to put it up for sale was the drop in the number of pictures I was taking. I just didn't like using it as much so I didn't carry it as often and when I did didn't take as many pictures. Part of that was the quality, but more the pistol grip style camera just didn't work for me - I much prefer the standard box shape.
It wasn't all bad, it has a long 10x optical zoom in a small body and pretty high compression (with good quality) on the videos.
After selling it I went back to a standard digital camera, I bought a Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera. I'm much happier with this, it is a great digital camera that happens to take good SD videos, my picture (and video) count has gone back up.

Questions & Answers Powered by Yahoo! Answers
Question : Where can I find an instruction manual for a Sanyo digital camera model # VPC-51285
I would like to know some more ways to use it. Got it as a Christmas gift
Answer:
Congratulations for intending to read the manual, so many people never bother and then wonder why their photos don't turn outDid you try the Sanyo website All the major manufacturers allow you to download user manuals in pdf format, hopefully Sanyo does, too.If you can't find one, don't worry too much. It is only a very small P&S camera with not much to it. Just play with the menus and the buttons, but at the same time start learning about photography. Also look at other manuals, they will explain many of the concepts and even the symbols used on the camera.

Use the USB Transfer cable that came with your camera. After you connect the cord to the camera & computer Windows will automatically detect just follow the instructions and save them where you would like to access them. You must have the power on the camera for the computer to detect new hardware. Also read your manual and use the CD if you got one.If you do not have a cord refer to you manual. Does it use a memory cardYou can get a card reader from any electronics store and accomplish this as well. This is really easy after the first time.
