CANON POWERSHOT A590 IS
Customer Review :
Wish they still made them ....
I agree with most of the previous more detailed reviews. This is a very good point and shoot camera in its price range.
Good points: - It isn't perfectly flat like most cheap p/s cameras. My larger hands like something to hold onto. Too bad this is a disappearing feature. - It uses two AA batteries stored in the right hand side grip. Rechargeable NiMh batteries run about $2 each and can be recharged hundreds of times. Non rechargeables are everywhere. Proprietary (usually Li ion) format batteries are pure manufacturer Greed - vote with your pocketbook until there is some standardization. - Good optical image stabilization and reliable autofocus.
Bad points: - Its immediate and similar successor (the A1100IS) is out of production. The newest successors use Li ion batteries, have the hard-to-grip flat and tiny form factor and are loaded with unneeded sensor pixels (>12M) to jack up the price.
- The incredibly ugly 'software' (if you could call it that) that comes with the camera. A separate 'Camera Window' component used to transfer pictures consists of two independent windows (one fixed) that look like no user interface in the Windows, MacOS or Linux universe. Once you close CW, the editing component 'ZoomBrowser' is launched whether you want it to or not. Fortunately, there are free alternatives like digikam (Linux based) that recognize the AS590IS.
In a better world Canon would continue making this camera, maintain and improve the build quality and move the feature set down into a lower price range. Current <$100 p/s cameras are throwaway junk!

Battery Life Needs Attention
I am quite happy with my Canon Powershot A590IS, with the exception of it's battery life. I can put in fresh recharged batteries, or fresh batteries, and in no time, the low battery life begins to flash, or the camera turns off and asks for new batteries. This has happened more than I wish to state. Other than this small mishap, I am pleased with my camera. There are many features which I am not yet fammiliar with, but am learning.

great pictures
Great camera but don't expect it to last more than a year or so, battery door broken, dark burn spots against bright backgrounds, the video function is a novelty, lens sticky, sloooow especially w flash, all the markings have worn off but I plan on replacing it with another Canon point & shoot, my old Sony Cyber Shot is built like a tank, still works like new and takes crappy pics....

My darling Camera
This camera has such quality in its opticals, in its reliability and durability, it has become my darling camera for most of my outings! The only defects listed in ratings I read before purchasing, had to do with the short durability of batteries (It is a battery guzzler). This I solved with Sanyo`s Eneloop rechargeable batteries. Two AA`s will last me for about 250-300 shots without problems. They even outlast any other batteries when I use the motion picture (with sound) feature in the camera. (Yes ...I can film moving events in very low light, such as club shows). If you want go around without worries about missing a splendid shot, also buy an 8 or 16GB memory card and you are ready for any vacation, family event or the Grand Canyon!

MY THIRD DIGITAL CANON
STOP searching. Just BUY THIS CAMERA. It does "it" at a good price. The "good" reviews I read were TRUE. I'm "content", I suppose... and you will be too.
DON'T buy a KODAK crapper. They have PLASTIC lenses.
HEY CANON... WHY NOT MAKE THIS MODEL IN VARIOUS COLOURS ?
I would have purchased TURQUOISE or PURPLE

Customer Review :
again one of those HIT late reviewed products
This camera is way overdue on my list for a review -- strangely i only decided to write about it after i got the Nikon D5000 12.3 MP DX Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens and 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD
I suppose the reason for this probably mainly the portability vs DSLR achievement on this camera. I know for a fact that comparing or even putting them next to each other is just plain sin against digital nature, but i needed to bring this up when you try to take a picture(s) of a very very active 1 year old boy! Or when your daughter has just finished building a "self proclaimed" blocks of a small city and wants you to capture it!
I would love to upload some photos to prove my point. Those small moments to be captured on DSLR are almost impossible to capture but with a point and shot like this! The best function on this camera is the various powerful settings with presets. I love the color accent which turns any image black and white and green ripping color effects.
All in all for a fantastic point and shoot quality of pictures, you cant go wrong with this Might Canon! (mind you i had this camera now for well over 2 years! very durable around kids too)

Great camera as always, but casing feels cheaper than predecessors?
The SD family line seems to always deliver. My only beef is that the casing seems to made of a cheaper material than before. No problems so far.

Great Pocket Camera!
I've had my camera for 3 years now, and I love it! It's not the best high quality camera out there, but it takes some pretty good pictures, indoors and out! I love the size of it, but of course the larger more expensive cameras do take better pictures. The case is very sturdy. I have dropped it from about 8ft (on accident, of course) and it didn't leave a mark! The zoom on the camera is not that great and tends to blur, however things that you don't need to zoom in on, or at least not all the way, turn out good! It takes good video as well, and there's several different camera settings to choose from! Overall this is a really good pocket camera, well worth the money!

Took this little gem to Iraq, Kuwait, Budapest, Ireland, Newfoundland, and Iceland! Super pics, easy to use! Went to my granddaughters 1st birthday party, dropped and broke it! I bought the same camera again because it's easy to use and carry around. Great camera for the novice or experienced! Super view! Service fast and efficient!

The PowerShot SX1 IS also makes it easy to enjoy HD movies and photos on your HDTV with a mini-HDMI cable for direct connection to a high-definition monitor. This allows you to enjoy the full quality of HD with no degradation of image or audio in the signal, but also improves playback functionality, letting you view up to 130 still images at once. The first PowerShot camera to feature a 10.0 Megapixel Canon CMOS sensor for superb image quality.Canon's proprietary CMOS sensors were formerly reserved for its storied EOS line. This enables the CMOS sensor to produce exceptionally clean image data, free of the stray signals that can mar images. The resulting images show a notable brilliance and clarity.
Customer Review :
Hands down the best hybrid camera I ever bought!
When I bought this camera it was for the hybrid capabilities and the impressive array of features for the price class.
Pros: - Awesome HD video quality - Powerful 20x optical zoom - Quality optical stabilizer - Quality construction
Cons: - Only average image quality - Confusing settings and modes
Summary: If you are looking for a very good hybrid cam that offers an impressive array of features but puts more emphasis on video quality then this is the perfect cam. Yes, the settings and modes can be a bit confusing but with a little usage they can be mastered.
Brief Review: Frankly I bought this camera with the intention of taking still images with it but I also wanted 1080p video capability (in case I don't have my much more expensive video camera with me). After taking several hundred images I found the still image quality to be unimpressive (or about average).
It was when I switched it to video mode that I was blown away. The quality and color depth when set to "vivid" preset was absolutely stunning! In fact, it was so good I immediately got rid of my dedicated video cam. Ironically, I love the video quality so much I have all but stopped taking pictures.

Great images, video, features and small size!
Comparing to my previous EOS Elan, this camera is amazing! You have to try it!

Poor Image Quality
Hi I researched for a good camera and zeroed in on the SX1. It was real hard for me to shell out about $650 for the camera and memory card.
Pros: What I liked with the camera: good contrast, colors in pictures. 20x optical and 4x digital (80x combined) zoom is super!
Cons: Pathetic image quality. If you take some pictures of trees + grass, everything is smudged. My 7 year old Fuji 2800 model (2 MP) camera takes sharper pictures (see my post at [...]) in which we can see the grass and foliage with well defined borders... This has been a great disappointment and nullifies all the pluses of the camera.
I am returning this item to seller...very unfortunate experience
Update:
I have returned the camera

SX1: the good & the bad
I bought this to replace an S5IS, so I'll be comparing the 2 cameras. in some ways it is a better camera, but the old S5 still does a few things better.
The good: HD Video: The 1080P movie capability is pretty awesome. Very few camcorders can do 1080P, but this camera does it, and does it pretty well. Movies are stable and look good, although a little jerky at times. The dedicated movie button is cool too. Rapid shooting: 5 frames per second at full res is pretty amazing - this is DSLR territory. LCD screen: the size and clarity are awesome, and the articulating feature is a must have for me. It would be perfect if not for the polarizing - see below. Build quality: This is the most solid camera of this type that I've used. DSLR like.
The bad: Picture quality: Canon went with a CMOS sensor to increase the speed, and it is fast, but the picture quality suffers. It is still pretty good, but pictures from the old trusty S5 are better - less noise, crisper, more detailed. Controls: Canon went from increment buttons on the S5 to a thumb dial on the SX1. This is used to change ISO, shutter speed, aperture and other settings I regularly access. The dial is just fussy and hard to use. Lens: Here I am comparing it with an S5 with a 1.8X teleconverter, achieving similar magnification. The the S5 images are better in every way, clearer with less distortion and fringing. LCD screen: Great screen BUT, and this is a big one for me... it is polarized the wrong way! Arg. The S5 screen is polarized such that when wearing polarized sunglasses, you can clearly see the screen in landscape position. The SX1 screen is polarized 90 degrees off from the S5. In other words when looking at he screen in landscape position, it is totally black with polarized sunglasses. This is a big one for me, since I love polarized glasses, and like to be able to shoot without taking them off. HD aspect ratio. You have to switch the camera from 4:3 to 16:9 to shoot HD video. Kind of a hassle switching back and fourth when shooting video & photos.
So I am using the SX1 mostly because of the HD feature. But aside from the build quality, HD, and still shooting speed, I prefer the old S5.
Rating :
Don't buy this camera
I would not recommend this camera. It is very heavy and the image quality is not very good. However, the biggest problem is that, from the beginning, all of my photos have a dark smudge in the center top. I returned the camera for repair under warranty; it was returned to me with the same problem. I am about to return it for the second time, but I am not optimistic that Canon will resolve the issue.

I have narrowed my digital camera purchase down to the Canon SD line. I am looking at the 850is, the 750 and the 1000. Question : Which is the best canon digital camera?
Hey, i recently purchased the Canon digital Elph, and it really sucks at taking pictures. I mean its good overall, but it gets REALLY shaky, and i would prefer something that is very durable. I believe there are certain types of canon cameras that work really well in taking pictures. Not really interested in the whole professional camera's only small digital cameras. What are the good ones? (From canon only)
Answer:
Here, take a look.http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/Actually all Canon cameras can take excellent photos. The user just has to understand the limitations under the conditions they use the cameras."REALLY" shaky shots are caused by using too slow a shutter speed when hand holding the camera. This applies to cameras that cost under $100 to the $8,000 Canon professional DSLR. Changing cameras will not solve this problem. It can be reduced some by buying a camera with built-in image stabilization system

Question : How do I upgrade the lens of my canon powershot digital camera?
I have a canon digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. what kind of lens do i look for to upgrade to higher zoom? I am pretty camera dumb but am getting into pics so want a camera that wont get blurry upon getting far a way pics.I found telephoto lenses that are 3x does that mean that my new zoom would be 7x since I already have a 4x or does it replace what the camera already has? This is where I am getting confused.
Answer:
Most cheaper non-DSLR cameras will not allow you to upgrade: the most you could hope to do is get an adapter piece and a telephoto mount for it. This only works if you actually spent good money on that camera, though since most don't afford it. Plus, telephotos are not worth the money if the zoom is that low, so you should just get a new camera in my opinion.Edit: A telephoto will compound with your camera's optical zoom, so 4x3 = 12x zoom. I should warn that most telephotos tend to make it more difficult to hold your camera in a balanced way and usually require their own stands if you want a clean shot.
