Gets the job done

This is a great camera for the everyday person. It's lightweight and simple to use. The zoom features are great. The only downfall is the delay it sometimes has when trying to take multiple pictures. Perhaps there are other features that I could use to change that, but I don't feel like taking the time to try. Asides from that it takes great pictures.

nice camera...but

takes great pictures but it eats batteries very quickly. rechargable batteries do not last but 10 min.

Dependable camera

I am an independent insurance adjuster and while I use this camera for personal photography I mostly use it in my work. I had the Power Shot A 630 before and while it was good, it is bulky and hard to fit into your pants pocket. The big plus with it was the flip view finder that was most handy. There are other cameras that are more compact than this one but most of them do not have a viewfinder. I find a viewfinder most helpful when you are out on a sunny day with the sun on your screen.

If you use the camera to transfer your photos from camera to your PC you are going to find that it has a hearty appetite for batteries so I suggest you invest in a card reader. If you take a lot of photos, a card reader will pay for itself in short order.

My biggest complaint about the camera is it is easy to change the settings on it and not know it. When climbing ladders, I put it in my pocket so it sometimes changes to another setting without me knowing it. For its size the zoom is good but you always would like more. I would prefer if it had a little more wide angle setting for some of the shots I have to take. The flash is OK and does a pretty good job eliminating redeye and I suspect does just as well as its competition in terms of effect distance, harshness and redeye reduction.

The quality appears to be excellent. I have not had one performance problem with it even though I have dropped it a couple of times. By the way, the A630 is still going strong too. When you are out on a claim you can't afford for your camera to quit on you so the A630 goes along as a back up. The only time I sue it is when I need the flip view finder.

Let's face it, since the coming of the digital age, Canon has been the number 1 seller and there is a reason for that. I also have a Canon Rebel SLR that I bought right after I retired from professional photography and it has also held up well and provides excellent exposures.

Given the success of Canon's highly acclaimed G Series, it's no surprise that ambitious photographers have been eagerly anticipating the next model in its evolution. The wait has paid off handsomely with the introduction of the PowerShot G9. In image quality and functionality, the G9 stands above the competition with 12.1 megapixels of resolution, a 6x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer, and RAW mode for the ultimate in creative control. Sophisticated design and high-quality construction complement the technology and make the G9 a camera to be reckoned with.

Customer Review :

Outstanding in Every way!!

Great LCD screen, no lag time when using RAW, many, many features, EXCELLENT picture quality, color rendition and detail. Small and compact. Equivalent to a dslr. The only draw back is that it's only 6x optical zoom. You can't do much with such a small zoom. But a great camera for the price.

What a GREAT Little Camera the Canon G9

website: [...]
At either of those two sites you'll find images made with the G9. I've only had it for two months but I take it everywhere - the office, shopping, etc. My regular camera when out shooting landscapes is my Nikon D300, and a series of lenses from the venerable Nikon 17-55 F2.8 (purchased here on Amazon for 1150.00) down to a first generation Lensbaby and everything in between.

This little G9, which I immediately set to capture jpeg+raw is excellent. I love sharp, crisp images and I hate noise. So, I try to keep it at under ISO 100 --usually set to ISO 80. The IS feature is amazing as well. It truly works miracles when handholding.

The camera, once you get to know it is easy to operate on the fly. That is very important to me. No twiddling. The supplied software which is called the Zoom Browser I've only used a few times as it's the ONLY way to get to the RAW editor! How funky is that? I am a Adobe Lightroom user so I really don't need it. I upload everything into Lightroom and go from there. I have used the Canon software just to see what it does but quite frankly it is so clunky I don't bother.

As far as image quality, the jpegs coming out of this camera are so sharp, and clear and colorful that I find myself not using the raw files. However as a shooting pro some of my stock agents REQUIRE me to submit the converted raw file after they have accepted the initial jpeg after their review. So... I'm stuck keeping the CR2 raw file around.

In a few weeks I'm going on a photo shoot and I am taking my Nikons and my gaggle of gear but my intentions on this trip are to shoot ALL my landscapes and other shots with the G9. As a matter of fact I am letting one of my kids use the D300 and all the gear instead of packing my extra Fuji Finepix S2 body for them to use. This is how confident I am that I will return with usable, marketable images generated from the G9.

Love the G9 with a wide angle lens adapter by Lensmate

I have owned the G9 going on 3+ years now, and I must say that it continues to impress me and both my friends and colleagues at work. I am an architect, and have traveled extensively around the world using this camera for both professional and personal use.

The great thing about the G9, is that it is a very effective Prosumer camera that bridges between the point and shoot, and the digital SLR's. I also bought a high quality aluminum finished wide angle lens adapter from Lensmate, that simply screws in front of the lens when you remove the O-ring around the lens. This effectively brings it up to 24mm wide angle from the current 28mm, and for architecture and buildings, makes an enormous difference. [...] to learn more about this really high quality company that makes lens adaptors specifically for the Canon line....in fact, their wide angle lens is not only much higher quality than what Canon sells, but is much more compact, made out of milled aluminum instead of plastic (Canon's version), and costs less!

I recently just got back from India, and took some amazing photos from that exotic country. Before that, I have used it in south america, patagonia region, Peru (macchu picchu), thailand, africa throughout asia....and have shot thousands of photos over these past several years, I still marvel at what a perfect camera this is for so many different uses and conditions.

I looked at the G10, but like several other readers comments, I came back to the G9 as actually superior, and in fact bought myself another G9 as a back-up. It is interesting on amazon that the g9 in fact sells for quite a bit more than the g10 or the current g11 version....and I think it is because serious photographers realize just how good the g9 is.

If you can get your hands on one (if not amazon, try ebay), you won't be dissapointed, and I have yet to see the need to go the the digital SLR camera yet, even with all the professional work I do which requires hi-res and quality images.

There is no better point and shoot camera!

This camera has provided years of excellent service and nearly 40GB of pictures, some published. The availability of add-on lensing and filters has been a boon, and only lacks in some low light conditions. I have a Casio EX3000 circa 2000 with f2.0 that puts the G9 to shame under high speed movement or low light conditions. Regardless, this amateur finds this camera to be a perfect point and shoot, multipurpose, multifunction (panorama) source of art, entertainment and capture.

If you go to France for a week, you need more than 8GB of storage :-)

If I lost this camera, this, or it's follow-on would be a must have.

Phenomenal camera

I have owned the G3 camera with the swivel screen ---loved it.... It took great pictures. Sadly it no longer works. My daughter purchased the G7 and just loves the ease of use, and the picture quality. I checked out the G10 but wasn't pleased with the reviews and certain aspects of the camera, so I purchased the G9 a tad bit late and paid a premium (but not as high as it is now). I have used it for a month and the picture quality, ease of use, and the capture ability of pictures is just phenomenal. The flash on this camera is powerful too. It takes great shots in the dark, you just need to wait for the camera to focus and great shots were taken at Halloween in the dark. It is so much more than the G3 and G7 but the quality is just great. I own the RebelTi as well, and the quality doesn't compare to the G9 for picture quality. Now all it needs is the swivel screen to come back to take better self-portraits. You won't go wrong with this camera!!!

The ultra-powerful 12x optical zoom on the PowerShot S5 IS means you’ll get the shot you want with no compromise, yet that’s only the beginning of what makes this camera so exciting. S5 IS is loaded with many of Canon’s latest advanced technologies including the DIGIC III Image Processor, so both still images and movies are rendered with fine detail and luminous clarity. And now ambitious photographers have even greater creative latitude thanks to an included hot shoe adapter that allows you to attach Canon Speedlite EX Series external flashes.

The best digital camera I have ever had.

This is an outstanding camera. It is so easy to use. The picture quality is excellent. I am very satisfy with it. The only thing that is not so good about it is that the shutter is a little slow. You have to wait a few seconds before you can shoot another one. But I solved this problem by using the Sport/Action Mode.

Great Little Camera!

This camera is great. I wanted something between an SLR and a small point and shoot so that I could easily take photos for my blogs that were high quality without having to lug around slr equipment.

This camera is great! While the automatic settings are nice, the manual settings are wonderful. I can manually adjust ISO and other features so that my photos come out right for every room and occassion.

There is some noise, but generally, it doesn't bother me. I don't plan on blowing anything up to poster size or anything.

I do mostly macro photography of food and I must say I am in love with the macro and especially the super macro. It's amazing for getting even the smallest details in high definition. This makes photographing food a complete breeze!

One of my favorite features of this camera is the flip around view screen. That makes it soo easy to take self portraits and photos with friends. No more holding your arm out and trying to snap a photo of yourself with a few friends and getting a picture of the side of someone's head.

Some thing that annoy me are that the view-finder is also a digital screen. Because of this I never use the view finder, it's just too distracting. Also, the lens cap pops off every time you look at it the wrong way, which, I understand the concept of... doesn't mean I have to like it though.

Overall, I really enjoy this camera. I'd say the pros outweigh the cons. I feel like anyone could take a great photo with this camera.

Had it for a year now

First of all, I have to admit that I'm a little confused because I purchased this (exact) camera from Amazon a year ago for $300 LESS. I'm not sure why the price jump. Anyway, I love my camera. I would call myself an "amateur enthusiast" as far as my photography knowledge. This camera was perfect for my skill level when I bought it and it has helped me grow as a photographer in the last year.

I haven't had any technical difficulties with it (and i mean, literally, NONE). I shoot mostly in the AV mode and I like to play around in the manual mode. I've been incredibly happy with the super-macro setting quality. I wish it had a wider aperture range but that's only because I may be outgrowing it a little. My next camera will be a (Canon) DSLR but there's no way I could have skipped this model and went straight there. It's quick to start up. I very, very rarely have to wait on it -- only when I realize after a shot that I should have used the flash, then I'm impatient to retake it. The LCD screen is terrific in my opinion and I like that you can pretty much angle this camera any way you want without having to shoot blind.

Before I bought it I read all the reviews so I knew about the lens cap issue and I was expecting random troubles. I have had none. Yeah, the lens cap sucks. A lot. I mean, if you're so much as WALKING hard it will fall off, but it's hardly a deal breaker. It's a minor annoyance that I'll take with the rest of the package. I couldn't be happier with this camera.

If you're a hobby photographer who isn't quite ready for a DSLR then this is the camera for you.

Great point and shoot camera

Many of the reviews I read on Amazon, and other places, are left by people who just recently purchased the item. Not real helpful. So I waited 11 months. That should be enough time to properly evaluate the Canon PowerShot SD1100IS.

I'll cut to the chase: this is a perfect point and shoot camera for people taking candid shots, vacation photos, kids, and general every day use. The quality is good, the options robust, and it's compact enough that it will fit you in your shirt pocket.

This IS not the perfect camera if you're trying to take professional looking photographs, particularly of nature and especially outside. You just don't have the focal depth to get rich pictures. My father in law has one of the Canon SLRs and you can really see the difference in quality. But you can also see and feel the difference in the size of the camera you're carrying around (a few ounces that can fit comfortably in your pocket v. a few pounds that needs it's own case). I'm not saying it doesn't take good outdoor pictures, it just doesn't pick up everything that your eyes do.

If you need a camera to take to parties, the kids' play date or soccer game, or just having fun, then this is a great camera. It has nearly all the features of other Canon cameras. Also, the video is really good quality and it saves it in .avi format.

Questions & Answers
Question : Can you recommend me an ultra slim and stylish Canon digital camera?
I need a Canon digital camera that can capture clear picutres and is able to take pictures under water.

Answer:
Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera.

Question : Which is better a Sony or a Canon digital camera ?
I'm panning to buy a good digital camera and i'm wondering which is better a sony digital camera or a canon. Do you know any good model to suggest ?

Answer:
Sony tends to be lower end. They're limited on lenses and feel cheap. Sony has been making SLRs since 2006 and Canon since the early 1900s. Who do you think would be better?

Question : Where can I get a nifty screen protector for my Canon digital camera?
A friend told me that they make those plastic protector things (that adhere just with static electricity) for digital camera screens so you don't scratch them. he said you can get them specifically for your make and model so they fit perfectly. I have a Canon PowerShot SX110 IS. Where can I find a protector for it?

Answer:
If you chose to go with the plastic protectors go to Walmart and by the targus at 2.79 than cut them by yourself. There are 4 in the box so if you make a mistake just throw it and cut a new one.If you chose to go with a custom made one made of glass be ready to spend around 30 dollars. Is it worth it for a camera that cost 240? Your call, I chose the Targus for my G10.

Question : Which is the best canon digital camera?
Hey, i recently purchased the Canon digital Elph, and it really sucks at taking pictures. I mean its good overall, but it gets REALLY shaky, and i would prefer something that is very durable. I believe there are certain types of canon cameras that work really well in taking pictures. Not really interested in the whole professional camera's only small digital cameras. What are the good ones? (From canon only)

Answer:
Here, take a look.http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/Actually all Canon cameras can take excellent photos. The user just has to understand the limitations under the conditions they use the cameras."REALLY" shaky shots are caused by using too slow a shutter speed when hand holding the camera. This applies to cameras that cost under $100 to the $8,000 Canon professional DSLR. Changing cameras will not solve this problem. It can be reduced some by buying a camera with built-in image stabilization system

Question : Suggestion for a canon digital camera?
Hi guys!I'm planning on a getting a canon digital camera (i alr have my dslr hehe) and the canon digital camera is for me and my family to share :) Yeap!Any ideas or suggestions which one i should get?

Answer:
Canon's latest EOS 7D mid-range DSLR is a pretty good option. It sports an 18 megapixel CMOS sensor, 19 point auto-focus system, an intelligent viewfinder, and 8 frames per second shooting. Additionally, it includes Canon's Dual DIGIC 4, an advanced imaging processor, which is the real engine behind EOS 7D's efficient and high resolution photography. If DSLR is not in your wish list, you can buy a Canon PowerShot or a more stylish Canon IXUS camera. IXUS range of Canon cameras is slimmer, has all the latest features, and looks elegant in hands.

Question : accesories for canon digital camera which makes me look like a pro?
haha! so i bought a new canon digital camera a Powershot a2000 IS. are there accessories that can make my photographs look pro and beautiful?and how do i attach them? pictures would be much appreciated thanks!

Answer:
Actually, your own photography skills will make your pictures look "pro and beautiful". So just focus on improving your photography skills. Even with a point-and-shoot camera, a person can take some very good pictures. Play around with the manual settings on your camera until you discover what works best for taking pictures under certain conditions. And read about things pertaining to photography, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed, etc.

Question : What kind of batteries should be used with Canon Digital camera A 570? Any specific brand?
I have recently purchased Canon A 570 Digital camera. The batteries have gone dead I have replaced the old Panasonic batteries with brand new Duracell battery however the moment I inserted the batteries I get battery low display. Are there any specific brands that we have to purchase and any specific model? Can we use rechargeable batteries?Which recharger should I use? Any specific brand? Please let me know the exact name of the model/brand of batteries.

Answer:
Yes, of course you can use rechargeable batteries. In fact, that's what you SHOULD use. Any good name brand of rechargeable NiMh battery and charger will do. Make sure they are high capacity (something like Energizer 2700mAh or higher).Your camera only uses 2 AA batteries, so make sure you buy 4 batteries and a charger that can charge 4 batteries at a time, so you always have a spare set.To lengthen your battery life, make sure you turn off the LCD in between shots, and also limit the use of the flash, zoom and recording of movies.Make sure you always give the batteries a charge before you plan to use the camera. Especially if you have not used it in a while, because NiMh batteries will discharge at the rate of about 1/2 -1% per day when not used. You can also use Lithium batteries (such as Energizer e2). They are non rechargeable and fairly expensive, but provide a much longer battery life than ordinary batteries. They are perfect as an emergency backup...and the good thing about them is that they do not discharge when not used.good luck...

Question : I am buying a Canon digital camera, which is the best model in the SD line?
I have narrowed my digital camera purchase down to the Canon SD line. I am looking at the 850is, the 750 and the 1000. The 850 and the 750 are very close in price and the 1000 is significantly cheaper. I can't seem to find many differences between the 3 and was wondering if anyone had any experience between any of these? Thanks
