$200 paperweight due to LENS ERROR defect

More fortunate than some, mine worked for almost 2 years before becoming yet another $200 paperweight due to the manufacturer's defective design that results in the dreaded LENS ERROR which renders your camera useless.
Since Canon never took responsibility for this defective design, I will never buy another Canon camera again.
UPDATE: Tonight, in a last-ditch effort, I intentionally FORCED the lens back into the camera and held it there for a few seconds. Then I turned it off, and back on again. It is now working properly, but for how long I don't know.

Great, unless........

Unless a few drops of water touch it - this happened to me while on vacation in Dominican Republic - I mean literally a few DROPS of water touched this camera and FRIED IT. I can see if I dropped it in water, but to have a few drops touch the outside for a few seconds ?! Other than that (but that is a big deal) I did like the camera and all the features and would have kept it a long time. Instead I have to buy another camera - I did the whole "put it in a bag with rice and wait a week for it to dry out" - but the LCD is still friend and without that - useless.

Great camera!

I received this camera as a gift for Christmas in 2008 and I have been using it constantly for the last year and a half. The camera is great, I have no problems with it AT ALL. My only complaint is that the pictures do kinda suck when you're in a very low-light situation and too far away from your subject to use the flash (i.e. at a wedding and not up front). The pictures come out grainy and blurry because without the flash, it won't focus on anything in particular. Other than that, I've had no problems, and even the videos come out great! No error messages yet so hopefully it continues!

Get the Picture/Picture Perfect

This is an excellent as well as attractive and compact digital camera. You get clear, crisp images and it is very user friendly. It is also ideal for travel as it is extremely light and you will be glad to have it if you want to catch and preserve a moment.

Although it is made of anondized aluminum, it is extremely light and yet quite durable. It has an 8MP CCD sensor. The instruction booklet makes a good thing even better still as it is written with directions as clear and sharp as the images you will get when you use this camera.

With this camera you can also record; use for movies and its nonpareil metering system can "catch" and freeze images that are largely in shadows or possibly over-exposed to light. The zoom feature is allows for good, clear close up images.

The only drawback I experienced, albeit minor was that the shutter speed of 1/1500 second is still not quick enough to freeze some action shots.

That having been said, this is an excellent camera that will serve its users well. Be sure to stock up on some spare batteries just in case you need to replace them. Instead of using the 32MB memory card which comes with the camera, use a pair of 4GB SDHC memory cards instead. They will come in handy if you want to shoot movies with your Canon.

This is an excellent camera that amateurs to pros use and it is a worthwhile investment. Canon stands behind its products and rightfully so. You can count on enjoying high caliber photographs and the lightness and durability of this model will ensure that it gets plenty of use.

CL) CANON POWERSHOT A460 DIG CAMERA

Customer Review :

Perfect basic "point and shoot" camera

We've had this camera for 3 years and it has been an ideal device. Some of its highlights:
* Low price
* Very solid
* Takes decent shots
* Uses standard AA batteries
* Simple to use

Low lights:
* Resolution a bit low
* Could be thinner to fit small pockets

All in all, for the price, the great pictures it takes and the longevity, I couldn't be more pleased.

Good basic camera that does what I need

I have owned the A460 for some time now and have no complaints. I purchased it for under $100.00 from Amazon so have no complaints. I needed a general-purpose camera to take fishing and on metal detecting outings and the camera has worked great it both situations. I took this camera and two sets of rechargeable batteries on a two-month business trip to Japan, Singapore and Diego Garcia and it did an excellent job. The only complaint I have is it is a little bulky but nothing I cannot live with. I use other larger cameras for low light work so that was not an issue for me.

Rating :

good pictures, power hungry

This is a good camera, it takes great pictures under almost any circumstances. Now, as almost all pocket cameras, it is not easy, much less fast, to put the menu onscreen and start choosing, so you use it almost always in automatic point and shoot mode.
4X optical zoom and 4x more in digital zoom is more than most in its class.

It has an unbelievable hunger for batteries, and it chews them very fast, both rechargeable or alcaline. That's its most negative aspect, and even with new ones, flash recycle takes several seconds (about 15).

Anyway, the pictures are good and 5MP is more than enough.

This camera was great at first

This camera definitely felt right, and the price wasn't bad. I bought this off amazon not too long ago. Whether the camera is aging or not, i'm not too sure. But I do know for a fact that this camera is very unreliable when it comes to taking photos of individuals that are moving, thus resulting in blurry photos and a severely limited flash range. I do know that this camera model is old, but the quality should not be at this rate. Buyers should be aware that this camera is around 2x the bulk of normal camera sizes, thus making it slightly more awkward to carry about. I guess I could bring up the issues it has with taking photos at poor lighting, but i'm sure someone will pounce on my review saying I don't know how to use the functions properly and what not. The honest trust is that this camera is reliable for a good few months, and then simply refuses to work properly. Like other reviewers have said, save your money a little longer and buy that better brand of digital cameras that you do trust.

Bait & Switch

I was disappointed in my order from Amazon.com. This is the first time I've ordered anything and I was passed onto another company called ABC Deals/ The Electronic Club for the Canon Supershot camera.

I thought I was buying a new camera and this one appeared to be refurbished as the box was used; the camera had some nicks on the camera body; and the camera was not factory sealed in plastic.

ABC Deals, the company that Amazon.com passed me along to hasn't returned my money in spite of the fact that I returned the camera in a timely manner. They were also difficult to get hold of by phone and email.

Nice pictures and too slow for action shots

This camera has captured some really fine shots. I wish they could be enlarged more than 12x15 though. Also, I like to take multiple shots in rapid progression e.g. like a bird sitting, lifting off, flying, etc. This camera is maddeningly SLOW for action shots. If you want a nice camera for family reunions or whatever, this is fine. If you like outdoor action shots, you might continue looking at the higher priced Canon's, etc.

Incredible image quality in a sleek and portable design!

Customer Review :

Buyer Beware - Canon does not back up this product

I've had my 870is for about two years. It was my third Canon compact camera (and my fourth digital Canon as I also have a Rebel) as I've generally had good luck and results with them. I bought it for the wide angle lens and the stabilizer but I also liked the the 8mp sensor, which is all you need in a camera of this size, and having some minor ability to manipulate the camera in manual mode. I've generally been pleased with it.

However about eight months ago I started having an artifact on the LCD screen. This artifact turned into a grey circle. Now I have two gray circles and the camera has become nearly unusuable. Since I don't always use a case, although one would expect to find a pocketable camera in a pocket, I thought that this problem may have been something I caused even though none of my prior cameras had this problem.

Now I'm finding out (a) that many people have had the same problem with this camera and (b) that Canon is not willing to do anything about it of the camera is out of warranty.

This is very disappointing to me. Since I have to buy a new camera since this one is nearly unusable I am going to be looking at, and probably buying, a camera from another manufacturer. This is entirely unacceptable.

Inconsistent quality, broken sound

We've had this camera two years and really tried to make it work. While we've had some good pictures with this camera, far too many are downright poor quality - mainly blurry, not sharp. Poor pictures in dim light as well. Additionally, the sound has completely broken on the video, rendering it useless. I am sad at how many pictures I have missed of my kids growing up due to this camera's poor quality. We let it go on too long, that is our fault, but I sure regret spending that much money on such a poor camera. Made me long for our old Canon G11.

Low Quality

I have a Canon SD870, I see a black dot on the LCD, almost half inch, when I turn the camera off, I can still see the spot, although it's now lighter than the dark LCD. So this appears to be a physical defect of some kind, not electronic. There are a few horizontal rows of pixels below the larger spot. they are grayish in color and semi translucent with small patches of pink and green ones around its edges.

Grainy low light pictures, ineffective flash in low light, fragile

All low light pictures are grainy. I have had this camera for a year now and have tried and tried different ways to improve the picture, to no avail. The flash is just now powerful enough and I can only assume the sensor is low quality to get such grainy pics. I have to literally get on the dance floor next to the married couple to get even a half decent picture of their first dance.

This camera is very fragile. the first time I dropped it, it broke. I dropped it on wood so it was not like dropping on concrete, but my wife's Fuji Finepix camera has been dropped time and time again with just scratches all over, never broke. I had the Canon fixed, but for the price this one cost, you would expect it to be a little more resilient.

Gray Circle on the LCD Screen is Hard to Ignore

I've had this camera for a couple of years. It has received light duty because we have other cameras for use around the house. For awhile we thought we had scratched the beautiful LCD on the back of the camera, but pictures were unaffected, so my wife and I figured we could live with the problem. Then the "scratches" went away and a hard-to-ignore gray circle appeared. I mean this thing is right in the way when you want to compose a picture. Did some online research and found this is getting to be a common problem with this camera. I would not recommend this camera, which is too bad, because it has taken some good pictures (outdoors) because it's easy to carry around.

Questions & Answers
Question : I am buying a Canon digital camera, which is the best model in the SD line?
I have narrowed my digital camera purchase down to the Canon SD line. I am looking at the 850is, the 750 and the 1000. The 850 and the 750 are very close in price and the 1000 is significantly cheaper. I can't seem to find many differences between the 3 and was wondering if anyone had any experience between any of these? Thanks

Answer:
Sorry i dont know much about cameras. I just bought one from Canon though that is wonderful.... Canon Rebel xti....

Question : Which is better a Sony or a Canon digital camera ?
I'm panning to buy a good digital camera and i'm wondering which is better a sony digital camera or a canon. Do you know any good model to suggest ?

Answer:
Sony tends to be lower end. They're limited on lenses and feel cheap. Sony has been making SLRs since 2006 and Canon since the early 1900s. Who do you think would be better?

Question : How do I upgrade the lens of my canon powershot digital camera?
I have a canon digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. what kind of lens do i look for to upgrade to higher zoom? I am pretty camera dumb but am getting into pics so want a camera that wont get blurry upon getting far a way pics.I found telephoto lenses that are 3x does that mean that my new zoom would be 7x since I already have a 4x or does it replace what the camera already has? This is where I am getting confused.

Answer:
Most cheaper non-DSLR cameras will not allow you to upgrade: the most you could hope to do is get an adapter piece and a telephoto mount for it. This only works if you actually spent good money on that camera, though since most don't afford it. Plus, telephotos are not worth the money if the zoom is that low, so you should just get a new camera in my opinion.Edit: A telephoto will compound with your camera's optical zoom, so 4x3 = 12x zoom. I should warn that most telephotos tend to make it more difficult to hold your camera in a balanced way and usually require their own stands if you want a clean shot.

Question : What kind of batteries should be used with Canon Digital camera A 570? Any specific brand?
I have recently purchased Canon A 570 Digital camera. The batteries have gone dead I have replaced the old Panasonic batteries with brand new Duracell battery however the moment I inserted the batteries I get battery low display. Are there any specific brands that we have to purchase and any specific model? Can we use rechargeable batteries?Which recharger should I use? Any specific brand? Please let me know the exact name of the model/brand of batteries.

Answer:
Yes, of course you can use rechargeable batteries. In fact, that's what you SHOULD use. Any good name brand of rechargeable NiMh battery and charger will do. Make sure they are high capacity (something like Energizer 2700mAh or higher).Your camera only uses 2 AA batteries, so make sure you buy 4 batteries and a charger that can charge 4 batteries at a time, so you always have a spare set.To lengthen your battery life, make sure you turn off the LCD in between shots, and also limit the use of the flash, zoom and recording of movies.Make sure you always give the batteries a charge before you plan to use the camera. Especially if you have not used it in a while, because NiMh batteries will discharge at the rate of about 1/2 -1% per day when not used.You can also use Lithium batteries (such as Energizer e2). They are non rechargeable and fairly expensive, but provide a much longer battery life than ordinary batteries. They are perfect as an emergency backup...and the good thing about them is that they do not discharge when not used.good luck...

Question : accesories for canon digital camera which makes me look like a pro?
haha! so i bought a new canon digital camera a Powershot a2000 IS. are there accessories that can make my photographs look pro and beautiful?and how do i attach them? pictures would be much appreciated thanks!

Answer:
Actually, your own photography skills will make your pictures look "pro and beautiful". So just focus on improving your photography skills. Even with a point-and-shoot camera, a person can take some very good pictures. Play around with the manual settings on your camera until you discover what works best for taking pictures under certain conditions. And read about things pertaining to photography, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed, etc.

Question : Canon digital camera and other non canon lens?
I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT and I was wondering what other kinds of non canon brand lenses can I use with my camera? Currently I use a Canon 50mm 1.8 and the 18-55mm kit lens.

Answer:
Some lenses to consider are those from Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina. On average, each lens does not do as well as their Canon or Nikon counterparts, but still get the job done. If you want quality, get Canon lenses. If you want a cheap alternative, go to the third party brands.As for specifics, I use a Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 at the moment, but am going to upgrade to a 70-200mm VR once I save up enough money. The Tamron is good for the money, but slow to focus. I hear this also plagues the type with the built in motor.The type of lens you want depends on the type of shooting you're going to do. If you shoot landscapes, look into a wide angle lens, such as the Sigma 10-20mm or Tamron 17-50mm. For telephoto zoom, the 70-200mm f2.8 Tamron would be a good option. I don't care too much for the Sigma, because there are issues with the outer coating. For portrait work, I've heard good things about the Tamron 90mm macro, or the Sigma 70mm macro. I have not used Tonkina, but some people say they are good, while others do not. I guess the same goes for Sigma, but not so much with Tamron.

Question : How do I upload photos from my canon digital camera to my macbook with a USB cord?
When I plug my canon camera into my macbook with the USB cord to upload photos nothing shows up on my screen. What program do I use to upload these photos or where do I go to upload the photos to my macbook? I do have a memory card but there is no slot on a macbook to plug memory cards in.

Question : what is the latest model of canon digital camera and what is diffrences between these ?
i have bought cannos sd 630 . But i know there is latest model of canon digital camera in the market . So i want to know what can i do with my cannos sd 630 and what can't i do ?

Answer:
The Canon SD 630 is a very good compact camera.I don't think you should worry about the other models for now. I would wait till next year to see what is coming out.They are...SD800 IS, 7.1 MP, 3.7x opticalSD900, 10MP, 3x opticalA630, 8MP, 4x optical but larger in sizeThe two SD models just have more megapixels and the newer processor.And the SD630 has the same excellent movie mode...and has a large 3.0" LCD. Just make sure you use a fast SD card.

Question : What canon digital camera body do you recommend to fit my sigma zoom lenses?
I have a Canon EOS Rebel G that came with a 28-80 mini zoom macro and a 70-300 macro super.....I want to get a digital that i can still use my lenses on.Any recommendations? Would it be cheaper to get just the body? Im looking in the $500 range.I am not a pro, but hope to get a good camera to learn that will last.

Answer:
Sure, you can buy something like the entry level Canon Rebel XSi or XS and will save buy buying only the body. If you want a wide angle lens, you will find the "kit" lens (18-55 mm IS) will give you a decent wide angle view.
