It may be Canon's slimmest Digital ELPH, but it's selection of photo-friendly options is undeniably wide. From full HD movie capture to peak performance in even the most unforgiving shooting conditions, this digital camera is on the cutting edge of point-and-shoot picture taking. One-year warranty. Model SD780IS.

Excellent camera for everyday use! Always ready!!!

Love this camera. I bought it for my daughter who just turned 19. She loves it too! I'm so glad that I bought it! The price was definitely right and the options exceeded our expectations. She has a great camera that is going to always be ready for her to roll out and use whenever she needs it in her busy life. And when she slows down, she'll have some great photos to look at and remember where she's been and what she did!! :-)

Last of the Enjoyable Canon Digital Elph Camera

The Canon PowerShot SD 780IS is my latest and the fourth Digital Elph acquisition. This could very well be the last camera for this Canon branch (with 12+ megapixels)to come with a real-image optical zoom viewfinder. I hope I am wrong on this assumption.

Prove me wrong on the following three points if one could do quality photographic management without a camera viewfinder:

1) Any compact digital camera(including the new Canon brands) which allows the photographer to get a good view of the object in front through the LCD screen, with the sun on his back.

2) Any compact digital camera (including the new Canon brands) which allows the photographer to take rapid succession or panning shots viewing through the LCD screen inches away from the eyes.

3) Conserve battery with a LCD screen only digital camera.

It's no point in lamenting the whys and the stupidity of doing away with an optical zoom viewfinder on the Digital Elph series, or any similar cameras for that matter. Best Buy doesn't even carry this Digital Elph model. All PowerShot cameras or similar it carries have only LCD screens.

Compact digital cameras with viewfinders are a vanishing species. If you like a digital camera with a viewfinder, or have ever own a lower than a 10 megapixel Canon PowerShot Digital Elph, get the SD780IS camera. It's worth it.

Great Choice

I've owned two cameras prior to this canon (a kodak & an olympus) and this is by far my favorite. Even though it wasn't the most important factor for me, the small size is a definite plus. I've used it for an entire day without having low battery although I do think charging nightly is a good idea if you use it quite a bit. The picture quality overall is great. Yes, it takes a blurry picture from time to time, but if you set the camera correctly (its really easy to do) your pictures will turn out great. I use this camera for facebook/internet use and for printing normal size photos & find it works very well! And an added bonus - its actually a pretty tough camera. The first week I had it, it was COMPLETELY submerged underwater for 5 minutes (turned off) and after about a week of drying out, it works perfectly. I can barely believe it & it makes me love it that much more. I highly recommend this camera!

I love everything about this camera. It's easy to use, it's conveniently tiny, the pictures are clear and taking video is easy also.

Great little point and shoot - does what I ask

This camera has more functions than I know about I am sure. I just turn it on, point it at what I want and take a picture. They usually turn out great and if they don't it is probably my fault, and that is the only reason I am giving it 4 stars. Sometimes it would be nice for these cameras to be idiot proof so that they still take great pictures when you just point and shoot, but they take even better pictures when you actually know how to use the camera properly and utilize all the fancy settings and functions. Some of us don't know how to trick out the F-stops, etc and we truly want the camera to do it ALL for us. :-)
But for the most part I'd say 95% of my pictures come out great. I got this camera after a trip to Costa Rica. My friend had a snappy Canon and every time we saw a great picture opportunity my old camera took forever to come to life and I was missing pictures while hers was up and shooting away. I did a lot of research on the Internet and decided on SD780IS, not only for its start up speed but for its other features, which I am slowly learning how to use.
I am no longer missing photo opportunities. It is also small enough that I carry it the tiniest of purses, or even my back pocket.

Decent Camera

After several months of looking at cameras, reviews, and specs, I decided on this camera. What sold me was the simplicity of the controls, the larger size of the camera (closest thing to a 35mm), large LCD, and some pretty darn good pictures. I do notice some purple fringing on contrast items with lighted backdrops, and the indoor mode can produce some dark pictures at times, but I think I need to play around with the settings more to produce optimal pictures for the conditions. Action photos can also be a little tricky with this camera due to slow camera focus adjustment and shutter speed. Downloading pictures to the computer is a snap with the included software. I sure wish it had an optical viewfinder so stabilizing the camera would be easier and faster.

Canon SX120IS

This camera is incredible for the price. I bought the SX110IS last year and get complements on my pictures/camera whenever people see it. I just bought two SX120IS for family members and they rave about this camera also. As point and shoot that fits in your purse/pocket, this camera has the best of everything. I am an amateur photographer who appreciates a good camera/great picture quality and this is hands down the camera for me.
The picture quality from Canon is the same if not better than some DSLR models out there. The colors are so vivid and the picture looks like you are actually there. The 10x zoom with 40x digital zoom makes this camera so much better than the base DSLR models. A friend bought the Canon S5 and I could get better pictures because of my ability to zoom that much further. The detail in micro focus photos is very very good and you can see things that you don't even really notice with your eye.
The SD card is wonderful because it is becoming so universal as well as the AA batteries. I bought a 8gig SD card and can get 3,000+ pictures at full resolution on it. I bought a set of 4 rechargeable batteries and am yet to have problems with not having them when I need them, which is what makes the AA more appealing than a battery pack. I get between 200-250 shots with the eneloop batteries I have from Amazon.Sanyo Eneloop 4 Pack AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargable Batteries w/ Charger
For the price, picture quality, size, zoom, and universal components this camera has to offer, you cannot beat it.

Disappointing.

The problem with this camera is that the lens got stuck. Twice! First time the lens wouldn't come out when the camera was turned on, causing the camera to beep and show a "lens error, restart camera" message, but each time I turned it off and on I got the same message. So I turned it into Canon to get fixed. Second time about 5 months later same thing happened, except the lens got stuck outside and will not go back in. I am extremely disappointed in this.

Great camera, awesome honeymoon photos from Hawaii

I got the older model of this camera (SX110) for my bridal shower, and after having it for a month I got "lens error" and it just would not work. So I went to the store and tried to exchange, but SX110 was no longer there. They did have the new SX120, so we got that! So far have not had any problems with the dreaded "lens error"!!!
So I've had this camera since October 2009 and really like it. The zoom is amazing. I can't wait to use it at the Lady Gaga concert I'm going to in a couple of weeks, haha. Have used it at baseball games and gotten great shots of the players.
Husband and I used it in Hawaii and we have amazing pictures. I was told by friends that some of our shots look "professional quality." We plan on getting large prints of some of the scenic shots and framing them in our bedroom. The different settings are great, sunset is especially awesome. We used that a lot on our trip. We bought a tripod and used the self timer to take pictures of the two of us together on the beach (it was a secluded beach). Self timer is great. I actually have not read the manual, so I'm sure this camera does a bunch of things that I am not even aware of. I love taking pictures, and would like to learn more about photography in the future. I think this camera will be a lot of fun to learn on.
I wanted a camera that was more durable and better quality than standard point and shoots. I've had cameras in the past that are so little and fragile that they get busted easily. I never had luck with HP or Sony, my mom has Canons and her cameras last and last, so that is why I went with a Canon this time and I think Canon is the best.
One thing...I wish I had had a waterproof digital before going to Hawaii. We had to leave this camera in the room a lot if we were going snorkeling or surfing. We bought a couple of disposable underwater cameras but the pictures got ruined in processing. Tons of awesome photos that we lost, and who knows if we will ever get back to Hawaii again. IF you are going on any kind of tropical or beach vacation, I suggest looking into getting a waterproof digital. I will be buying one (probably the new Canon one) for my next vacation for sure.

Never underestimate this camera's performance by its low price.

The irony in the camera's world is the cheaper the camera, the better the picture quality. This is true at least in my case. For years I've owned the following cameras in the order of their prices:
Canon A490 ($95) (5 stars)
Canon Xsi ($612) (5 stars)
Canon T2i ($849) (4 stars)
Nikon D70 ($1,000) (4 stars)
Canon 50D ($1,110) (3 stars)

Unfortunately, the order of the picture quality is just the opposite---Canon A490 being the best (5-star) and Canon 50D being the worst.

You can never complain anything about A490. Too bad I can't post here stunningly beautiful pictures taken with my A490 that I recently purchased from Amazon.

Good camera for a low price

I've had this camera for two weeks, and I'm almost completely satisfied.
Good:
Easy to use for basic point-and-shoot pictures and zooming
Quick to turn on
Picture quality is good

Not so good:
Several of our outdoor zoomed pictures had a noticable streak/lens flare if the camera was pointed in the same general direction as the sun.
As with most digital cameras, the instructions are skimpy and the features are indicated by cryptic little icons.
The screen seems fragile, although nothing has damaged it yet. Maybe not a problem.

Overall, not perfect, but quite worth the price.

Faulty design and absolute rip off service

I purchased my Canon SD 1200IS in September, 2009 from Amazon for $160. For the five months that it worked, it worked well. I was careful with it, never near sand nor a beach, never in the rain, kept it in a case. But 5 months later it would not power on, or when I would finally get it to turn on, it would extend the lens and then power down, an even more frustrating situation. I sent the camera in to be repaired while it was under warranty. I then received an estimated repair cost of $118, claiming that it was water damage. Again, the camera was never in the rain, never dropped in water. To my knowledge it was never even damp. If ambient humidity may have caused the problem that is certainly a design flaw and this camera should only be sold in the desert. I had read online that Canon repair had done this same sort of rip off with others and somehow thought that as I knew I'd treated the camera well that my case would not be the same. I am greatly disappointed and will never waste my money on a Canon camera again.

I was extremely disappointed with the durability, or lack thereof, of the camera even with proper care. I was even more disappointed with the outrageous repair estimates that was not even explained by the repair service. As I have seen that others have had the same experience and now learn that one of the cameras I'd given as a gift did the same thing, it is interesting that on Canon's own website the reviews are so glowing. This may have been how I was led to believe it was a good camera in the first place. I have recommended Canon cameras to many of my friends and family and have purchased 5 as gifts in addition to other Canon products (copier, printer/fax, etc.). I will now need to start warning people about Canon's cameras.

I bought this for my girlfriend and she used to have this Olympus one but I got her into the Canon line of cameras and she noticed the picture quality. Worth the buy, and honestly it has good picture quality. You get what you pay for, and with this you will get what you want....Trust me I was playing with that thing the first second I saw it and took a ton of pictures everywhere we went. Good stuff.

I got this camera as a gift 3 months ago and have only rceently gotten around to using it . 2 weeks of being used and always keeping it in a case with no damage ,fall or anyhting interesting hapening to it it just plain refuses to work with the msg 'lens error restart camera ' . I won't be buying a canon again

Lens error

I bought the camera exactly 13 month ago. Never had a problem and liked it overall. Easy to use, good picture quality and battery life was very good. Today however without any warning the lens doesn't open up and I get the error "lens error restart camera". 1 month past the warranty. Reading up on it I guess it is a known error that Canon doesn't warrant. I guess I will not buy a Canon anymore.

Many Features but lacks Pocket User Guide

I have had 3 Canon Point and shoot cameras before. My last camera was a SD630 and broke when is was dropped.
I ordered the Canon SD1400IS based on Consumer Reports review. The camera has many more functions than the Sd630.
With so mant functions, I need to refer to the User Guide for instructions on how to set up the features.
The bad news is the 170 page user guide is in pdf format and you need a computer handy to read the guide.
You can print it but it is 170 pagers in 8 x 10 pages. I don't carry a PC on vacation and absolutely
will not carry 170 8x10 pages either. What is the use of making a very small camera but have the UG so large?
I understand Canon is cutting costs but had I known about the lack of handy pocket user guide, I would have
chosen another model or brand.

Canon1400is is not high quality

This camera is a cheap money maker for Canon. It is not good quality, nor is it high performance. The zoom is little or nothing, the feel of it in your hand is cheap, the "zoom" button is hard to use, requires two hands to hold while useing, and there is a long delay/pause in between taking pictures. The video play back when down loaded to your PC then played with Quick Time Player is TERRIBLE! The video quality is "jerky and pauses" rendering it almost unwatchable. In fairness if you connect the camera directly to your TV, the pictures and video watching are good. The camera takes fairly good quality pictures inside the house where flash is required but you can't have flash on due to sensitive eyes. All together I would not recommend this product, and it does not possess the valve/quality of a two hundred dollar camera.

Compact, high quality, easy to use

I lost my 4- 5-year-old old Canon PowerShot and needed a new one asap for our vacation. I agonized over various models and decided on the SD1400IS. (I researched on Amazon and Consumer Reports websites.)

The Panasonic Lumix is better for someone who wants to have more control over the camera. It has more bells and whistles and things to adjust. I was turned off by the Nikon Coolpix because once you drop it, it's $100 to repair, and I know I'll drop this at some point. (Thank you to the reviewers that let me know about this issue!) I had a Canon before so I knew I'd be basically familiar with the new one.

My old camera was metal (I think), easy to hold, so very easy to use, and the quality was very good. I was apprehensive with the new one--would it be too small, too difficult to turn on, to hold, to move out of the way of the flash? Well, thanks to all of the reviewers, I knew what to expect.

It is a very thin camera and therefore a little awkward for the first week, trying to make sure it didn't fall out of my hand (I'm a one-hand photographer [not one-handed; I just like to use one hand]). But I got used to this very quickly. The on-off button is flush with the camera's body and must be pressed _below_ the body, but again, I knew about it and it's not that big a deal--unless you have big or calloused fingers. The flash location is another known issue, but it's been an easy adjustment to train myself to get my hand out of the way.

The buttons on the back of the camera are similar to my old camera and so were intuitive when figuring out what they did. So far, everything is similar. I haven't had to open the manual. The battery door looks delicate, but I know about it, so I'm careful.

The LCD is much bigger than I'm used to, and it's great. Even in the sun I can see the image pretty well. 14.1 MP rocks!

Blurry images and videos, poor lighting and noise. Difficulties in focusing at night.

I owned several previous PowerShot models and I loved them all. I have tried lots of other makes too and until now Canon always ranked top in the quality of pictures. However, the SD1400 has difficulties in processing the pictures.

Comments:
1) AUTO mode is useless. It only works under ideal conditions. Canon tried to improve it by increasing the number of factors it calculates, but this defeated the purpose. Many times, especially at night, it sets the focusing range in "Macro" mode and my pictures get blurry. Generally, I get lots of blurry images, lots of overexposed images and noise. This wasn't the case with similar previous models that their AUTO mode was less complex.

2) Similarly, other modes with semi-auto functions result in blurry and noisy images too. To overcome this, I only use it at "P" mode where I set ISO to 100 (or sometimes more), focusing range to 'infinity' and I select whether to use flash or not. Also, almost every time I use a different focusing/lighting point (by pressing the shutter button half-way) in order to achieve better lighting and not "burn" the picture.

3) Very nice HD 720p video. However: A. Difficulty focusing at night too, B. Very large files mainly due to uncompressed audio.

4) Nice lens, nice screen, fast browsing and very compact. However: Due to its round shape, it is very difficult to balance it on a surface in order to use timer.

5) Nice features like 'color accent' and 'long shutter' (15 sec). Also excellent pictures under ideal lighting conditions.

My general comment is that with previous Canon models, most of the times I would be satisfied with the picture. With this one, almost every other time I have to retake the picture. Therefore, I would not recommend this camera. I am selling mine and I will buy a different make, at least until Canon improves its compact range.

Advice to those who know nothing about cameras:
Don't be fooled by Megapixels and other numbers under the camera specifications. It is how well all the features of the camera work together to achieve the best result that matters. If you need proof, take a picture with a mobile phone and then set a compact camera at the same megapixels as your phone and compare the images. You will see a huge difference. Therefore, just read the reviews and buy the camera that has the largest percentage of users satisfied with its pictures.

I've purchased many new cameas, what went wrong?

I've just had this camera arrive today, so I cannot really rate the item, but I'm rather shocked with the outcome so far. I am CERTAIN I purchased this camera from Amazon, since it was in stock, etc... The package came a day later than expected, and the instruction package had already been ripped open by a previous buyer? For spending his amount of money, I expect brand spanking new. UNOPENED packages. Other items were not in their original packaging as well. This is leading me to believe that I am NOT having a brand new camera, but perhaps a refurbished one at a "new" price? Just for the heck of it, I looked the vendor that it DID ship from (it was supposed to be Super shipper, no S/H fees, but there were!) and the previous customers had 100% wonderful things to say about them!! What on Earth happened? I need to call Amazon. This is not acceptable. Also, an item that was in my order, that WAS verified as going to be shipped, is now no longer available...is this all customary?? Any reply/advice would be appreciated...THANK YOU.

Question : Where can I get a nifty screen protector for my Canon digital camera?
A friend told me that they make those plastic protector things (that adhere just with static electricity) for digital camera screens so you don't scratch them. he said you can get them specifically for your make and model so they fit perfectly. I have a Canon PowerShot SX110 IS. Where can I find a protector for it?

Answer:
If you chose to go with the plastic protectors go to Walmart and by the targus at 2.79 than cut them by yourself. There are 4 in the box so if you make a mistake just throw it and cut a new one.If you chose to go with a custom made one made of glass be ready to spend around 30 dollars. Is it worth it for a camera that cost 240? Your call, I chose the Targus for my G10.

Question : How do I upgrade the lens of my canon powershot digital camera?
I have a canon digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. what kind of lens do i look for to upgrade to higher zoom? I am pretty camera dumb but am getting into pics so want a camera that wont get blurry upon getting far a way pics.I found telephoto lenses that are 3x does that mean that my new zoom would be 7x since I already have a 4x or does it replace what the camera already has? This is where I am getting confused.

Answer:
Most cheaper non-DSLR cameras will not allow you to upgrade: the most you could hope to do is get an adapter piece and a telephoto mount for it. This only works if you actually spent good money on that camera, though since most don't afford it. Plus, telephotos are not worth the money if the zoom is that low, so you should just get a new camera in my opinion.Edit: A telephoto will compound with your camera's optical zoom, so 4x3 = 12x zoom. I should warn that most telephotos tend to make it more difficult to hold your camera in a balanced way and usually require their own stands if you want a clean shot.
