The little camera that could

I've had this little Powershot A410 for years. It fits well in my purse or pocket, so it is with me ALWAYS. I also have a Canon Powershot S3IS that is a "more advanced" point and shoot.

Lately I have been getting the bug to upgrade to a DSLR and most likely will in the next month. I have also been looking at small point & shoots to replace the A410.

I have just realized that would be a waste of money. This little camera produces images that are just as good (and sometimes better) than the other Canon or other shots I see taken with expensive cameras.

Twice now this camera has gotten completely soaking wet....and it's fine! Just the other day, I dropped it on some rocks ...hard .... and it's just fine!

There is nothing negative about this great little oldie but goodie!

3 Year Old Camera; Review

I've had this camera for 3 years now. I use AA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries. Never a problem with the camera or the batteries (I got the Sony brand that comes with the charger). You'll probably need to buy batteries, a larger memory card, and perhaps a case. This camera will not take SD cards that are "HC" (high capacity). Those cards are usually 4GB and higher.

Picture resolutions this camera can capture:
2048 x 1536
1600 x 1200
1024 x 768
640 x 480

There are 3 Modes you can enable, 1) Superfine, 2) Fine, and 3) Normal. These settings change the JPEG compression. Superfine has little to no compression. And Normal will have the most compression. If you lower the setting to "Normal", you can decrease the file sizes and fit more pictures on your SD card and take more pictures.

This camera will show you the amount of pictures you can take at a particular setting. For example, with a 512MB SD card, at the highest resolution of 2048x1536 and set at "Superfine", it will take 302 pictures. At 2048x1536, and set at "Normal" it will take 1066 pictures. If you have used up half your card disk space, it will account for that and display the amount of pictures you can take.

It can capture movies/videos. They will not have sound though. Below are the dimensions:
640 x 480 at 10 FPS
320 x 240 at 20 FPS
FPS = Frames Per Second

The 320x240 videos look good and run a lot smoother because of the higher frames per second.

Also has common features like Macro, Supermacro, indoor/outdoor settings, etc.

I'll never buy another digital camera till this one breaks down. I use to think the megapixels of the camera meant it would take better pictures. However, that is incorrect. That only means it will take higher resolution pictures, which doesn't necessarily mean better pictures. If you do a lot of printing or print larger than 8.5 x 11, then megapixels would matter. I stopped caring about that since I rather have a camera just take quality pictures. If I were printing posters or something, I'd care.

It is fairly simply to use.

Just Right

I got this camera in 2005 and it is now 2008 and it has been everywhere with me! We've gone skiing, went to Niagara falls (this camera survived maid of the mist boat ride), several zoos, conventions, graduations, microbiology laboratory ect. This thing has stayed working in all sorts of weather after much tumbling around in my handbag. I take it to school and work every day. I've never had any problems with it - ever. The menus and functions are user-friendly. The flash is just right (not harsh) and never makes my face look shiny like so many other cameras do. The zoom is awesome and the self-timer can be custom set in many ways!

Tip: use rechargeable batteries rather than regular. This camera went through my AAs very quickly during long events (half day and full day events called for at least one battery change). Now, with the $20 rechargeable 2500mAh batteries, I only run out of power every few months no matter how many or long my photo-ops last! It's been great!

One question, though. Why is there a video feature if the camera cannot record audio (sound)??? I never use the video feature because of this.

This camera takes great pictures, is durable, and is my best friend. Thank you Canon!

2010 Update: An orange juice spill is what finally did this camera in. Everything was so sticky in impossible to clean places that it became too difficult to use.

Excellent toy camera

Update: This is a toy camera but an excellent one at that. Good quality pictures.

The deal breakers: Uses AA batteries. That means you take three pictures for every two AA batteries.

good camera

i haven't used the camera a lot...but when i have it has worked out just fine. my "old" digital camera is just that...old. i have had it for over 10 years. although it is much larger than my "new" camera - i have to admit i am more comfortable using it. the old camera doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the new one --- that is something that is hard for me to get used to. but the canon a410 is a really good camera for a fairly low price. i am happy with my purchase.

Nice point and shoot camera to carry around. Takes excellent pictures in daylight, but you do not have control of camera speed or aperature settings. When indoors the flash is very slow to recycle.

Love it

I have had this camera for some time now and it is still fabulous. I bought more for my family ( mom, etc.) and everyone loves it. Of course there are better out there, but it is a great buy and pics come out clear and beautiful. The batteries need charging OFTEN as pretty much all digitals. keep extra batteries around always that are already charged and ready to swap. Would absolutely recommend this camera either way.

Disappointed after 18 months

We purchased this camera 18 months ago for our trip to Hawaii. It took some great scenic pictures. Indoor pictures are another story,we had noticed the Red-Eye on subjects was very bad, even with the Red-Eye settings set to On. Every batch of photo's we had taken we have had to use photo editing software to remove the red-eye problem afterwards. Today the internal flash quit working. I changed the batteries, pulled the CMOS Battery and let it power down in hopes it would reboot. With new Batteries the flash still would not work. Since we were not overly-impressed with the quality of the pictures anyways, I salvaged the Batteries and the SD Card and tossed the camera in the garbage. We will not even check into getting this fixed.

Our Kodak DX4530 is 8 years older, been dropped numerous times, been thrown on accident, rainstorms, hunting and hiking trips, tossed around in backpacks, suitcases and glove boxes and even forgotten in a hot vehicle for two weeks and still works to this day. The Canon PowerShot had a pampered and very easy life in comparison and was not ever dropped, been wet or thrown. I would consider looking at another camera before considering the purchase of this one.

GREAT camera

My dad has had this camera for awhile now, and it still works REALLY well. We've never had any problems with the camera. I actually like this camera better than my Kodak EasyShare C7430. Now I'm in the process of getting myself a new camera and I'm not really sure what I want to get. As much as I love my dad's, I'm not sure if I want to get the same camera he has. In fact, I think it's time I give his camera back to him. Two things I LOVE about the Canon Power Shot are the zoom and video features. I love the fact you can just push the button and make a video. I also like the zoom feature on the Canon Power Shot. I want a new camera that has the video feature and a better zoom on it.

Editorial Review :

With the Canon PowerShot S230, you've got the best of both worlds--the compact size and high style of the digital Elph series plus the higher resolution of a 3-megapixel camera. Updating the popular 2-megapixel PowerShot S200, the PowerShot S230 also features a 2x optical zoom, an improved 3.2x digital zoom, movie mode for videos up to 3 minutes, and more--all in a stylish, compact package.

Optics and Resolution
S230's nine-point autofocus lets you sharpen the image on your subject, no matter where it is in the frame.
Featuring a 3.2-megapixel CCD sensor, the PowerShot S230 delivers a wide range of detail and color (with images up to 2048 x 1536 pixels) and prints up to 11 by 14 inches. Canon's high-quality 2x optical zoom lens allows you to close in on the action, while the 3.2x digital zoom allows for a combined 6.4x zoom, letting you capture intimate details that might have been missed with another camera. The PowerShot S230 is also one of the few digital cameras to feature wide-area nine-point autofocus for taking crisp, sharp images no matter where the subject appears in the image frame.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on CompactFlash memory cards, and a 16 MB card is included. When shooting images at the medium or fine setting, the 16 MB card will store approximately 26 images. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB storage-class connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the S230 can also record movie clips of up to 3 minutes. You can choose from three different video formats: 160 x 120, 320 x 240, or 640 x 480 pixels. Both picture and sound quality have been improved, and an editing feature allows you to delete unwanted scenes during playback. The S230's photo-effect mode lets you do more with your still images. Choose from low sharpening, vivid color, sepia, neutral, and black and white.

More Features
Though it's primarily designed as a point-and-shoot, the S230 includes several advanced features for photographers who want more creative control, including exposure compensation, low-light manual shutter speeds, manual ISO and white balance, and stitch assist, plus black-and-white, sepia, vivid, and neutral modes.

The PowerShot S230 uses highly advanced technology to make your digital photography experience simple. DIGIC enhances image definition and processing speed, while the sophisticated iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology assures faster and more accurate autofocus, autoexposure, and automatic white balance. The intelligent-orientation sensor ensures your pictures are always right side up, on the LCD or even while downloading.

Horizontal

Vertical
S230's Intelligent Orientation Sensor knows which of your images were shot horizontally and which were shot vertically.

Power, Size, and Contents
The camera is powered by a proprietary Canon rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included). It measures 3.4 by 2.2 by 1.1 inches and weighs 6.4 ounces. This package includes the PowerShot S230 digital camera, 16 MB CompactFlash card, lithium-ion battery (model NB-1LH) and battery charger (model CB-2LS), USB and A/V cables, wrist strap, and CD-ROM with imaging software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

Subject to CCR Image Sensor Defect

Please be advised that this model, along with several other Canon digital cameras, is subject to an advisory issued by Canon regarding a "CCR Image Sensor" defect. A part in the camera made by Sony is susceptible to a loose connection. In shooting mode the image appears as a purplish/black distorted image. Canon stated in their advisory that this would be fixed free of charge regardless of warranty expiration. I returned my camera to Canon repair and just received a repair estimate of $109.62. I am very disappointed with Canon's response to this. Google "Canon customer complaints" and you will find a long list of customers with similar complaints about Canon repair services. I am about to drop out of the technology revolution.

No help provided by Canon

I ordered the camera online and the screen didn't dispaly anything. Later I found that my cousin had the same camera and she had to trash it because the battery would die very fast even though she took the pains to buy a new battery for it. I purchased a canon since I thought it was a reputed company and would care about their customer or technical support. But the truth is that they don't even have a technical support number listed anywhere. So thats it with Canon products...

Love my little Elph

I bought this camera almost 4 years ago, and I love it in every way. It takes great pictures, uses a rechargeable battery and is great on battery life. I go about 6 months without having to recharge the battery. I would say I take a medium amount of pictures.

Recently Dec. 2007, I went to go take a picture and the screen was blank with a few purplish lines running through it.. My icons showed up, but there wasn't anything in the LCD. When viewing playback pictures, those pictures show up in the view finder. I recharged the battery and tried again, same thing. For a while, I thought I would have to get a new camera.

I called Canon support (for the other reviewer, I found the number very easy to find, 1-800-828-4040.) After going through their voice prompts, I got a customer service person right away. No wait! Plus, the rep was in Virginia, so there weren't any of the typical issues that happen when customer support is located in India (like HP).

I described the problem, the rep helped me reset the camera, it worked for a few seconds. The rep told me to keep taking pictures for a few more seconds, because the fix may be temporary, and sure enough, the picture went blank again. (IMHO, most customer service departments would try to get me off the phone the second it started working again).

Long story short, there is a service advisory out on this camera, it turns out that the "image sensor" may malfunction. Canon is paying for the shipment back to them and they will fix it for free. No muss, no fuss. It didn't even matter that I had the camera for almost 4 years. This was one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had.

If your camera starts acting up like this, call Canon right away.

**update 1/12/08 ***
Canon was not able to fix my camera so they sent me a BRAND new one, a SD900 , a much much better camera. My camera was not under warranty anymore, but since it was the "image sensor" issue, Canon still covered it. Amazing customer service, very rare these days. They just earned a customer for life.

Question : How do I upgrade the lens of my canon powershot digital camera?
I have a canon digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. what kind of lens do i look for to upgrade to higher zoom? I am pretty camera dumb but am getting into pics so want a camera that wont get blurry upon getting far a way pics.I found telephoto lenses that are 3x does that mean that my new zoom would be 7x since I already have a 4x or does it replace what the camera already has? This is where I am getting confused.

Answer:
Most cheaper non-DSLR cameras will not allow you to upgrade: the most you could hope to do is get an adapter piece and a telephoto mount for it. This only works if you actually spent good money on that camera, though since most don't afford it. Plus, telephotos are not worth the money if the zoom is that low, so you should just get a new camera in my opinion.Edit: A telephoto will compound with your camera's optical zoom, so 4x3 = 12x zoom. I should warn that most telephotos tend to make it more difficult to hold your camera in a balanced way and usually require their own stands if you want a clean shot.

Question : accesories for canon digital camera which makes me look like a pro?
haha! so i bought a new canon digital camera a Powershot a2000 IS. are there accessories that can make my photographs look pro and beautiful?and how do i attach them? pictures would be much appreciated thanks!

Answer:
Actually, your own photography skills will make your pictures look "pro and beautiful". So just focus on improving your photography skills. Even with a point-and-shoot camera, a person can take some very good pictures. Play around with the manual settings on your camera until you discover what works best for taking pictures under certain conditions. And read about things pertaining to photography, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed, etc.

Question : Canon digital camera and other non canon lens?
I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT and I was wondering what other kinds of non canon brand lenses can I use with my camera? Currently I use a Canon 50mm 1.8 and the 18-55mm kit lens.

Answer:
Some lenses to consider are those from Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina. On average, each lens does not do as well as their Canon or Nikon counterparts, but still get the job done. If you want quality, get Canon lenses. If you want a cheap alternative, go to the third party brands. As for specifics, I use a Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 at the moment, but am going to upgrade to a 70-200mm VR once I save up enough money. The Tamron is good for the money, but slow to focus. I hear this also plagues the type with the built in motor. The type of lens you want depends on the type of shooting you're going to do. If you shoot landscapes, look into a wide angle lens, such as the Sigma 10-20mm or Tamron 17-50mm. For telephoto zoom, the 70-200mm f2.8 Tamron would be a good option. I don't care too much for the Sigma, because there are issues with the outer coating. For portrait work, I've heard good things about the Tamron 90mm macro, or the Sigma 70mm macro. I have not used Tonkina, but some people say they are good, while others do not. I guess the same goes for Sigma, but not so much with Tamron.

Question : Which is the best canon digital camera?
Hey, i recently purchased the Canon digital Elph, and it really sucks at taking pictures. I mean its good overall, but it gets REALLY shaky, and i would prefer something that is very durable. I believe there are certain types of canon cameras that work really well in taking pictures. Not really interested in the whole professional camera's only small digital cameras. What are the good ones? (From canon only)

Answer:
Here, take a look.http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/Actually all Canon cameras can take excellent photos. The user just has to understand the limitations under the conditions they use the cameras."REALLY" shaky shots are caused by using too slow a shutter speed when hand holding the camera. This applies to cameras that cost under $100 to the $8,000 Canon professional DSLR. Changing cameras will not solve this problem. It can be reduced some by buying a camera with built-in image stabilization system

Question : What kind of batteries should be used with Canon Digital camera A 570? Any specific brand?
I have recently purchased Canon A 570 Digital camera. The batteries have gone dead I have replaced the old Panasonic batteries with brand new Duracell battery however the moment I inserted the batteries I get battery low display. Are there any specific brands that we have to purchase and any specific model? Can we use rechargeable batteries?Which recharger should I use? Any specific brand? Please let me know the exact name of the model/brand of batteries.

Answer:
Yes, of course you can use rechargeable batteries. In fact, that's what you SHOULD use. Any good name brand of rechargeable NiMh battery and charger will do. Make sure they are high capacity (something like Energizer 2700mAh or higher).Your camera only uses 2 AA batteries, so make sure you buy 4 batteries and a charger that can charge 4 batteries at a time, so you always have a spare set.To lengthen your battery life, make sure you turn off the LCD in between shots, and also limit the use of the flash, zoom and recording of movies.Make sure you always give the batteries a charge before you plan to use the camera. Especially if you have not used it in a while, because NiMh batteries will discharge at the rate of about 1/2 -1% per day when not used. You can also use Lithium batteries (such as Energizer e2). They are non rechargeable and fairly expensive, but provide a much longer battery life than ordinary batteries. They are perfect as an emergency backup...and the good thing about them is that they do not discharge when not used.good luck...

Question : how to know whether a canon digital camera have a bluetooth option or not?

Question : Which is better a Sony or a Canon digital camera ?
I'm panning to buy a good digital camera and i'm wondering which is better a sony digital camera or a canon. Do you know any good model to suggest ?

Answer:
Sony tends to be lower end. They're limited on lenses and feel cheap. Sony has been making SLRs since 2006 and Canon since the early 1900s. Who do you think would be better?

Answer:
If there is not one near you try B&H or Adoramas used department Calumet may also sell used equipment. Buying used from a reputable company will give you some protection that you are getting what you think you are
