SURVIVED IRAQ 2010

I bought the Pentax K200D in September 2009 during my deployment in Iraq. It has gone out on every combat mission that I have been on and given me excellent results. Obviously the RAW pictures are of much better quality than JPEG, so if you shoot in RAW this camera is the right choice. This camera has been in wet environments, sandstorms, and dust.

Moral of the story is that I have no complaints about it. If it can survive Iraq and combat missions, than it can survive the US.

AA Battery DSLR

Pentax is the only company that currently manufactures AA battery powered DSLR's. If you don't like to charge batteries then this is an advantage. Pentax recommends Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries as these have more juice. You can use Alkaline AA batteries however they won't last as long as the Lithium AA batteries. Let's say you are at a museum, zoo, sporting event etc and you discover your Digital camera is out of power, if you have a rechargeable battery there's nothing you can do you won't be able to take photos, now let's say the same thing happens with the Pentax K200D, well all you have to do is go to the gift shop and buy some AA batteries and you're ready to shoot.

Another advantage of the pentax is that you can use manual focus k-mount lenses from 1975 onward with the Pentax DSLRs.(there are limitations, see the manual for more details)

The build quality is excellent for this camera it has weather sealing to protect it from moisture and dust, it also has a top LCD display features usually not seen on a camera in this price range.

Rating :

good for entry level

My first DSLR was pentax *ist DL. this is the second one. My current one is Nikon D90.
COmparing the image quality, pentax really lacks comparing to Nikon. Pentax has much more noise in the same ISO setup. The lens (18-200) is not as sharp as Nikon's 18-200. The difference does not need to be tested in labs but can be told clearly by eyes. Although it is not a fair comparison because of the price difference, my point is that if you do need a high quality DSLR to start with, go with Nikon or Canon, while if your most concern is budget, Pentax is cheaper but "cheaper" image quality as well.

Pentax K200D

Years ago I had a Pentax K1000 SLR camera, used it for over 20 years. Decided to buy another Pentax and get a digital, part of my decision was made on the fact that Pentax lenses are supposed to be interchanageable with all Pentax cameras.
I ordered the camera, and tried using my old lenses on it. It fit which is what Pentax says it would do, but would not work with any automatic functions, and after about a hour of trying to figure out how to get it to work, I gave up and sent for the digital lens that comes with the camera. I love the camera, took it on a trip to Nantucket, MA, it worked great! Pictures came out very nice, love the shake reduction, even took pictures from a moving car and they came out really good.
I would recomment this camera, but if you want to use the automatic functions, get it with the digital lens. If you have lots of time, and are a whole lot smarter than me you could try to use your old Pentax lenses from your SLR.

Fantastic - the way to go if you want to try a digital SLR

I love this camera. It has so much flexibility and so many features. I had a Pentax K1000 film camera that I just loved (still do). The K200D will take all my old lenses. I have to manually focus, but the K200D will adjust exposure to the set aperture and with the right setting will even take the picture with the shutter depressed only when you have the correct focus.

It uses AA batteries, awesome! Reviewers critcize this feature which makes no sense to me. I know that in 10-20 years I will be able to find AA batteries, lithium or rechargable, anywhere. A proprietary battery pack with a proprietary charger like so many of the other DSLR's? Good luck finding those even 5 years from now. I bought some 2500 mah recharchable AA's that last for over 500 shots at least (mostly non-flash).

The 18-55mm AL II kit lens is very versatile and clear, produces great pictures. 18mm Digital is ~28mm or wide angle for film so I've captured some great landscapes, turned around, zoomed it in the 55mm and gotten a great face pic of my kids.

No, this camera does not have live view and does not shoot video, but that is not photography in the traditional sense. Looking through the viewfinder is natural and gives you realistic composition, especially in strong sunlight. I've tried live view DSLR's and they drove me crazy, especially in sunlight where composing a picture became difficult. Shooting video with a DSLR is like shooting still photography with your videocamera - yuck.

The K200D has a very solid body, is weather sealed, and after a year of constant use has proved to be a tank like my old Pentax K1000. Did I mention it takes "RAW" in PEF or DNG format with the click of a button and the quality of the pictures is outstanding? 10 Megapixels is enough resolution to print most any size picture other than billboards, and going to higher megapixels only makes the file sizes larger to work with.

Go for it.

Customer Review :

Pentax K20D

This camera is not the top of the line model in Pentax, but is is cheaper, (Approximately $400.00), and does an excellent job, and it does perform many of the same functions as the K7D.

Love this camera. Its my first digital SLR. I have numerous older Pentax lenses that I used in the 80's that I occasionally use on this body. I did buy two new lens for the D SLR. Very happy with the performance. I have no complaints.

Best bang for the buck

As a world traveler I wanted a weatherproof, dust resistant Primary DSLR for a reasonable price. This is a discontinued model which received rave reviews and cost 1/3 the price of cameras with similar features. The shake reduction works so well that I can take hand held pictures with a 300mm telephoto.

The newest used camera I could have possibly got!

Customer Review :

Nikon d90 rocks!

The camera came for a vacation in Europe. It came in quite handy. 1200+ pictures and multiple live mode videos. Only charged the battery 1x. Amazing battery life.

The pictures are awesome! Quality unbelievable. Ease of use for getting it 1 day before I left on a 3 week vacation...was remarkable! The iso functioning...amazing...the pictures brought out more than I could even attempt to make out with the naked eye.

The build is nice and solid...mostly metal construction. The protective lcd cover is a huge plus when you are tracking it around all over the place on vacation and does not change the image all that much.

I previously had a canon slr camera. I have to say. I may have just become a nikon junkie. haha. Great camera. Great price. Good luck to anyone looking to purchase...it is worth the bit more to spend over the nikon 5000. Have fun with it! Now I probably need to go to a photography course to make the most of it...so that it does not feel neglected when not used at its full potential. Just go buy it!

Questions & Answers
Question : What digital SLR camera would you recommend for a beginner?
I am 15 and have never photographed professionally before (apart form my 2.0 mega pixel phone camera) but I really want to startI would like a Digital SLR camera but my budget is only £140 - I wouldn't mind getting it second hand but you never know on the internet whether sources are trustworthy. Ideally the camera should be small and lightweight (and not too breakable!!) It doesn't even need to be SLR but I would like it to be good qualityWhat would you recommend?

Answer:
If you are just starting out and want to learn about photographic techniques there's no real benefit in jumping into DSLRs straight away...........unless someone offers you a real bargain.I would suggest you get some experience with a compact camera that has manual controls - aperture priority, shutter priority and fully manual. This will help you understand the importance of aperture, shutter speed etc. but you'll also be able to experiment with white balance ISO sensitivity and other variables. There aren't too many compacts that have fully manual controls but a delve into a variety of camera websites such as Steve's Digicams, DP Review and Cameralabs should provide you with some likely candidates. With your budget you might struggle to get the latest and greatest models but shop around. I picked up a Canon Powershot SX120 IS for just a little bit more than your budget which is a pretty new camera and has full manual options plus a 10x zoom and image stabilisation. I use it as a "take anywhere" camera and as a backup for my Nikon DSLR.

Question : Which is the best digital SLR camera and lens combination available within 500$?
I have used point and shoot cameras for 2 years and would love to graduate to digital SLR cameras.I would prefer a camera which is not too new in the market.

Answer:
I happen to like the E series digital SLR's from Olympus. At ten megapixel's, the camera's lens is astoundingly sharp and the whole enchilada will cost you well within your budget. Check some of the sites like B&H Photo. Be wary of kits that offer you a bunch of stuff you don't need. There's also a package deal with two zooms for the E-510. Great feeling camera in the hand as well.

Question : Can anyone advised what's the best digital slr camera should i choose for a beginner like me?
I'm starting to love photography. I have a Fuji S7000 and a Canon ixus70. Been taking photos for relatives and friends in weddings, birthday parties and families outdoor activities such as BBQ parties for the last 2 years. Thought of getting myself a digital slr camera to explore more on best photography.

Answer:
If you aren't invested in lenses for an SLR then I suggest looking seriously at the Sony A100 and Pentax K100D Super. The A100 is 10mp, has Super Anti-Shake in the camera body, has dust removal for the sensor and accepts every Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985. It also accepts many of the Maxxum accessories. The K100D Super is 6.1mp, has Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body, has dust removal for the sensor, and you can use every K-mount lens made since 1975. Of course the older lenses will be manual focus but they will have the benefit of IS.Since the introduction of the Sony A700 and Pentax K10D the A100 & K100D Super should be dropping in price. However, careful shopping might find the K10D and A700 available for a reasonable price.

Question : What kind of digital SLR camera is best for beginners?
I've taken a recent interest in photography - I've always taken pictures with a normal digital point and shoot camera, but I really really want a beginner SLR camera, which can take really nice pictures but is reasonably priced. I don't know ANYTHING about SLR cameras, but the ones I've looked at so far are the Nikon D40, and the Canon Rebel, and the Pentax K110.... any advice?

Answer:
The Nikon D40 is probably the best beginner SLR, especially for the price.Stepping up from there, consider the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, the Nikon D40x, and the Canon EOS Rebel XTi.The Pentax K100D super is also a good choice, but I think the Nikon is better built.

Question : What digital slr camera should I buy for magazine photography? I am not a professional photographer?
My partner and I have set up a local community magazine, we have been using a point and shoot digital camera, but feel that we now need to upgrade to a slr. We have no professional training in photography, so have limited knowlege on the subject. I have searched the internet for different reviews, but just seem to drown in information. Please can someone offer advice, please!!!!!

Answer:
any entry point DSLR will be good enough. Something like the Nikon D40 or the Canon Digital Rebel XT/350D is perfect for a starter like you. They're pretty affordable (compared to other DSLRs that is) and it works just like any other DSLR so if you upgrade your camera to another DSLR in the future you won't find yourself in a hard time adapting yourself to a new camera. The hardest thing to pick is not the camera - it's the lens - some lenses are specialized and there's one made for specific task, and it won't work well if you use it for another task. But at this point - if all you do is taking picture of people, I think the kit lens that comes with the two camera I mentioned above is good enough. Finally I highly recommend a photography class for you - a DSLR is a pretty complex piece of equipment (well there's an auto mode but you won't be utilizing a DSLR's potential if you're using auto and at that point you'd better off with a point and shoot anyway) and you will appreciate what you have to learn in the photography class.Well, I hope this helps.

Question : digital slr?
I'm somewhat of a newbie to cameras, but not as much as some. I have several point and shoot cameras, no digital slr's.what brand, make or model do you suggest to purchase, and why? I'm looking in the maximum of $700 before tax range.I was somewhat interested in the nikon d40x and the canon rebel xti (or something like that). What are your thoughts?

Answer:
Let me help you sort out the monotony that comes with buying a DSLR.Someone suggested the Sony Alpha or the Pentax K100D, citing the in-camera shake reduction. This would be a plus, but is really only a selling point. In truth, this shake reduction only provides around 2 stops difference. Also, on the Pentax K100D, this sucks away the battery life on a camera that runs on AA batteries. Yes, this is the only DSLR that runs on AA's, and hopefully will remain so. You see, the battery life is severely cut, giving you only around 400 pictures before they give out. My thing with the Sony Alpha are its less than good image quality at higher ISO's, and its tendency to over saturate. The Nikon D40x is an excellent camera for the money, and the best bang for your buck in its class; a title once held by Canon and the Digital Rebel series. The Nikon D40x has great image quality, excellent build and layout, and a supurb selection of lenses. Granted, non AF-S lenses will not auto focus. The reason being, Nikon took out the in camera motor. This seems like a major flaw, but when you think about it, it really was not. The Nikon D40 and D40x are designed for people who are moving up from point and shoots, who do not have any previous Nikkors, and who do not plan to buy any besides the 18-55mm kit or the 55-200mm extended kit. This is also why these cameras cannot be found with out the kit 18-55mm. This does not mean you cannot use the older screw driven Nikkors. You can still get that great quality, only you'll have to manual focus the lens. This sucks, I know, but it's easy to get use to. Besides, photographers have been manual focusing their lenses for well over a hundred years, and they continue to do this today; look at the $1000 Canon 65mm 1x-5 macro: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=155&modelid=7325 Yes, it's a manual focus, and a great lens, both optically and its all uses. Just look at it...!The Nikon D40x, like all Nikon cameras is very well built. This goes from the $550 D40 to the $5,000 D3. This has held true all the way back in the days of film. Canon on the other hand always feels "Cheap", that is plasticy and fragile. I don't care what anyone says, but the Digital Rebel series, the Rebel, the XT and the XTi all feel terrible. The 40D is much better, but still feels like a Canon-light and cheap. It really only really goes away with the supurb EOS 5D and the Mark series. One other thing that bring down Canon are its lenses. Unlike Nikon, whose lenses are stunning, Canon suffers from some optical flaws. Now, I love the way Canon USM lenses look and feel, but this is about it. Really, the optical quality does not get good until you lay out around $500. But the L series is where the optical quality become flawless. Overall, I would suggest the Nikon D40x. For so cheap and such great quality, why would you want to miss it? For Canon, you'll have to spend a lot more money to get the same quality. If you go with Canon, at least get the 40D and a good lens. Otherwise, you'll be disapointed. From what you've read, I might sound one sided with Nikon. Let me just say, this is how I feel, and from my own experiences with both Canon, Nikon, and Sony, Pentax, Mamiya, and others. If I use a Nikon, I know I get quality. If I use a Canon 5D and an L lens, I know I get quality as well. I would be crazy to say Canon is a bad company, as I would to say Nikon is. In truth, both make excellent products.Hope this helps.

Question : What digital SLR camera is a good buy? inexpensive and good quality?
I want to get a digital SLR camera to play with photography. My point and shoot digital camera doesn't give me depth of field, pictures look flat. What digital SLR camera is not that expensive but gives you good quality of photos?

Answer:
Any Digital SLR will run you 700+.I suggest starting with a film SLR.Find one on ebay for under $100.Shoots great and you learn a lot more than the automatic digital help that many digital SLRs have. Then once you feel that photography is actually something worth investing in, then research and find one right for you!

Question : what would be a good digital slr camera for a beginner?
I am interested in photography as a hobby and I am just a beginner. What would be a good digital slr camera to start out with? I don't want something too cheap but it doesn't have to be fancy either.

Answer:
OK here is my short answer. for digital I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) . I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them

Question : What digital slr camera is best for amateur photographers?
I really want a digital slr camera, but I don't want to spend a fortune, I've been looking at used ones, and refurbished but they're all so expensive! I've been manly looking at getting a canon EOS rebel xs. Is that a decent camera? I currently have a canon regular digital camera and I love it.

Answer:
With DSLR's your buying into a system and Canon is far and away the most expensive, closely followed by Nikon.Pentax, Olympus and Sony have many more features. They may be more expensive initially, but a soon as you start adding lenses, flashguns etc. they work out much cheaper for the same or Higher quality. You finish with a much more useful system for less money.Things to look for are a bright viewfinder, good build quality, adjustments of everyday things such as EV value, focus point, metering mode etc. without having to go into a menu. These are basic to using your camera for anything other than 'point and shoot'.Pentax and Sony offer image stabilisation in camera, so every lens you fit is image stabilised without a price premium. Pentax in particular have a massive range of older high quality lenses available for very little, all will be image stabilised.A second hand Pentax DS, which is now 5 years old, would be available at a lower price than a Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel, and is much more of a camera than either of them, it has a genuine pentaprism in the viewfinder which means a brighter image, much better build quality, the same Sony sensor that was used on the Nikon D80. The only downside is the lack of image stabilisation. Like all Pentax DSLR's it can operate as a 'focus trap' which no other make of DSLR can do.Chris

Question : What kind of Digital SLR camera should i buy?
I want to get a digital SLR camera and planning on spending about $500, but i dont know which one i should get. I have been seeing XSi on some DSLR and some that don't have it on it. What does it mean? What is the better brand that i should get?
