Digital Camara review HP Photosmart R717
My Only complaint is the memory card was defective in a sense that the 2GB memory card was only able to hold 11 pictures and unable to save. I have an hp photosmart 2610xi all-in-one which has a card reader and an error appears can't read it only out of the camara. And that's a shame. Over the week end I went to the Auto Show and I was disappointed with the unit only to find out it was the memory card, I didn't bring a spare one with me. It was the last day of the auto show.

Beware of Reliability on this Camera
I bought this camera a little over 2 years ago and, initially, I was very pleased with it until recently. Many features and a well-written manual.
I was trying to recharge the battery last week and the camera would not respond (no charging). I tried a second battery I had purchased as a spare when I first bought the camera, and had the same problem.
I called their service deptartment and was connected to a very sweet woman in India who had limited English skills. I gave up with her and then filed a service request on the internet and was told that the camera was beyond the 1 year warranty and was apparently "dysfunctional." Plainly put, it was broken.
I am very displeased with a camera that initially cost close to $300 and lasted only about 2 years. It was manufactured in China. I would expect that a camera in this price range would certainly last much longer, as my prior Japanese camera did (it was stolen). It is the VERY LAST H-P product I will ever buy and you may want to be careful in considering any of their (Chinese manufactured) products.

Thick camera but clear pictures
I originally got an R707 (5 mega pixels) but the screen broke. Since it was under warranty, I sent it back to the manufacturer and got this camera instead - the R717. They gave me a free upgrade.
First of all this is a thick camera. It's not one of those super slim ones. You can still fit it in your pocket but you will feel it more. Second it's a family point and shoot. It's not going to take rapid pictures or have quick flashes and like.
OK, but here's the important part. It takes REALLY sharp pictures! Currently, I have been using a Nikon CoolPix. You would expect a Nikon 8MP camera to take sharp pictures. Maybe if I put it on a tripod it would (haven't tried it). I just feel the Nikon's pictures are not that sharp, like they are sometimes out of focus. It can be acceptable, but not like this HP R717. This HP camera takes really sharp pictures. That's what I like about it.
The HP R717 main draw for me is that the pictures look awesome. 6 MP is more than enough for viewing on screen and for printing 4x6 pictures (probably could do 8x10 easily). It's thick, it may be slow, and the video is very grainy, but if you want SHARP pictures, I found this camera to have that.
Unfortunately, my R717 was in my pocket and crushed when I fell off my scooter so the screen is malfunctioning and the camera a bit scratched up... but it still works and takes sharp pictures! That's the best point about this camera - in focus, sharp pictures!

DISCONTINUED FOR A REASON?
This camera was gifted to me by my parents before a trip to China. I really liked it and thought it was great. However, 12 months later, the camera bought the farm. I had a huge event coming up at this time and wanted a camera very quick that I knew how to use, so, stupid me, ordered the same camera, thinking the 1 year lifespan had to have been a fluke. Guess what? My 2nd HP R717 lasted for 13 months before it died ! Mind, I was not spilling soda on it or dropping the things either...too bad I can't get my money back - over $400 spent on these things. I feel ashamed, and so should HP.
Rating :
Great years ago, but out of date now
Overview: Not a bad camera but for 2009 it is a little outdated
Functionality: one thing I do not like about this camera is the time it takes to actually take a picture, you click the button it will take a picture up to 2 seconds later (not because of lake of light) but because it has to load memory. This is good for still pictures and daytime pictures but not for night or when your at an event where you would want to take a quick succession of pictures.
Quality: 6.2 Megapixiles used to be a lot, and if you print out the pictures on photo-paper it is. Computers these days can display more than that and investing in a camera with more megapixles will get you better clarity/quality photos.
Ease of use: well the button that takes the picture is in the same spot as every other camera so its not that hard to start clicking out of the box. If you want to change settings that is fairly easy keeping in mind that all the changes you make will be erased and default settings take effect after you turn the camera on and off. It has a few different settings depending on where you are (snow, beach, action, etc...) which make light changes but none that will actually help much.
Bottom line: For me this was reliable, still works after years of having one but the technology is out dated and the camera isn't that great. Buy another camera, a thinner one that can take photos quickly. You'll enjoy it more.

still have this camera
I still use, it was my first digi camera bought it in 2003 or 2004? cant remember but it still works but not that good, dropped a few times. it uses lots of battery juice. Rechargables dont work long in it. I paid about [...] or so then. wowwww how things come down

decent first time camera
I got this camera as a gift and it eats batteries but it's not bad for a starter camera. It still takes great pictures. If you buy a memory card for it too it can hold a lot of photos. Not the best, but still pretty good.

WORST Camera
This camera was a gift. The first camera didn't seem to be formatted correctly so we took it back & got another one to replace it.
We had trouble from day one. It EATS batteries, I use rechargeable batteries. At first I thought something was wrong with the batteries so I purchased a different brand of rechargeable batteries, it didn't change a thing. I take 5 pictures & Camera tells me batteries are low & it won't process or perform after that. Clarity is a problem as well. I spent 5 hours on the phone with several Techs in India, what a joke! SAVE YOUR MONEY & DO NOT WASTE IT ON THIS CAMERA!!!!

HP 733 Camera Sucks
I got a new HP 733 camera and within a year, it just quit. Then I bought another one because it had the features I liked and thought maybe I had a lemon before. Within a year the new one stopped also. Two out of two and always a format problem. And it just didn't do well with anything over 1G Chip. Too much for this old camera to process it seemed. The best was 512 MB and that was OK for little stuff and short trips. Will Never buy one again and suggest you don't. RM in Allentown, PA

Great point and shoot for it's time
This was my very first digital camera I ever owned. I purchased it back in 2003 and continued to use it up through 2008 when the zoom lens quit working. Considering the amount of photos I took and the fact that it saw it's fair share of abuse(accidental of course) this camea held up pretty well. I always loved the quality of the shots I go with the marco setting on this camera. I agree with everyone else, it did zap the batteries pretty quick, seems like it went through rechargables real quick so I didnt even bother with those. I found the Walgreens brand batteries gave me the most bang for the buck and they are plenty cheap! Also there is still support available for this on HP's website. If you get this camera I suggest you go there and download any available firmware updates that are available. It's a pretty simple process and they walk you through it step by step.

good camera
I've had this camera for well over a year, and I love it. It does take a while to recharge its flash and that has frustrated me at times. This can be helped, but not totally avoided, by always having freshly recharged batteries.
It does eat batteries quickly, but I find that as long as I recharge them enough, it's fine. It only takes two AA batteries and most rechargeable batteries come in sets of at least four, so I always have an extra two with me and switch them out if need be. Of course, if you're the kind of person who always forgets to/never charges their batteries, this is a bad choice for you.
It takes wonderful pictures. I've used it in pretty much any setting you can think of and it's been great. If you leave it someplace cold it'll take a bit to turn back on, but I imagine any other camera would have a similar problem.
Some other reviewers have said this isn't a hardy piece of machinery. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've dropped the thing a number of times and it's still good as new. A little scratched, of course, but it works just as well as it did when it was new.
I pretty much recommend this to anyone, unless you have a problem with being patient about things. Yes, the flash can take a bit to recharge, so just anticipate that. Make sure your batteries are charged. That's all. =)

COMPLETE JUNK!
This is the most over priced and poorest quality cameras on the market. I have returned mine twice for repairs and now the auto focus is going out. The camera's MACRO function is a joke and if your looking for a camera that can take pictures in low light then this ain't it because it won't. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!

Not a very good camera
I have had this camera since December of 2005.But i got i with the printer too.The printer is very good. But more can be said for the camera. For a few reasons The battery life is very poor.Like it can probley last you 30 mins at the most. And some times if you take a lot of pictures you can use them from the camera. And it will say photo can not be found. And sometimes whene you turn the camera on the screen will be off.And the screen is kind of bleek and dark and blurry too.And the video quality is horrible. And when you are taking a video with the camer the videos are very blurry and poor. And when you take a video you can look at the video on the camera but you CAN NOT HEAR THE SOUND.You have to have a computer to here the sound. And my grandpa has a canon and you can watch the video and hear the sound on the camera too!!!!!And in my opinon HP makes better computers then cameras. Thanks.

so-so camera
This camera i have had for a while, and i personally think it stinks. It is somewhat heavy for this range. The mega pixels are only 5, zoom is only 3x, and it takes AA batteries. It's battery life is not very good, it is heavy, and overall i would not suggest it.

Questions & Answers
Question : my digital camera stopped working!?
Its a hp Hewlett Packard photosmart digital camera with 2x digital zoom.I put brand new batteries in it and even a new memory card. What can i do to fix it? I need Help! QUICK!
Answer:
Check that the batteries are inserted correctly. If it's under warranty, send it in for servicing. If it's not, try removing the batteries and leaving them out for a day or two. If it still doesn't work, toss it. Unfortunately, your cheapie HP won't be worth the cost to fix it, just replace it!

Question : Is the Hewlett Packard Photosmart M437 Digital Camera, 5.0MP a good camera?
Tell me some of the 'great' features of this camera. Like if you can make your pics black and white on the camera, and if it has options like that.
Answer:
Yes , but I prefer the PCWOrld magazine "best buy" ( price x technologie x megapixels ), theHP Photosmart R927 ,8.2 megapixels ( $260.00 ) and HP Photosmart R967 , 10 megapixels. ( $280.00).The Photosmart M437 is good but the difference bettween cameras are just $50 ( if your choice is Deluxe acessories kit ), or basic kit ( $140.00) .The M437 has a range of shooting modes that provide predefined settings for everyday situations. They are optimized for particular types of scenes or shooting situations and include Beach and Snow, -Landscape, Night portrait, and more.-Record Video and Print Video stills.-Built-in and Expandable Memory.-In-camera Editing Features. The other cameras features:-3.0" LCD Display.-Take Creative Control -The Photosmart R927 Digital Camera has a complete range of exposure and scene options, including manual exposure, so you"ll be able to get exactly the image you want. -HP Adaptive LightingThis ground-breaking technology automatically adjusts high contrast photos to reveal the detail that would otherwise be lost in the shadows - ideal when you're shooting into the sun or using flash. HP In-camera Red-eye RemovalRemove red-eye without having to transfer photos to your computer. This unique, easy-to-use tool automatically recognizes red-eye and lets you remove it immediately via your camera's LCD screen. HP In-camera Panorama StitchingYour camera stitches up to 5 photos together to create a single photo for easy printing. And I like HP support.good luck

Question : what causes many brown lines when I take pictures on my digital camera?
Hewlett Packard digital camera, about 1 1/2 - 2 yrs old. Really a wonderful camera. All of a sudden though every picture I take has darker brown lines running over the complete viewer. Not the battery. Nothing happened to the camera. The lines show up when you view the pictures on your camera and also when you upload them to your computer. Just a constant neatly multi-lined darker streaking over the entire viewer/picture. I haven't printed any pics but, again, lines show up looking at pics on camera and also uploaded to my pc. Any ideas? Doesn't show up under trouble shooting on the HP site and of course I think my warranty is well over. I like the camera so much though (docks to the 4" x 6" HP printer) that I don't want to get a different one if I can fix this one somehow without it costing $3,000,000. Appreciate your time and suggestions/thoughts.
Answer:
Try a camera reset. When a camera does something strange, that's the first place to start.Since the lines show in the files on your computer, it's not the LCD. It might be the card.Take out the card and take a picture using the internal memory. If it works okay, then try formatting the card in the camera. Cleaning the card's contacts is a good idea too, in case there's a little corrosion. If the problem persists you may need a new card.Last option (and least likely), the sensor has developed a fault. It will cost too much to fix.Try typing the model number into Amazon and see if there's a second hand one for sale.

Answer:
I guess it depends on what you plan to do with the camera and what kind of pictures you want to take. HP makes pretty decent printers and if you can get a sample shot printed from it prior to purchase depending on your satisfaction with the quality of the print that should be your main decision maker on that scale. Also be aware that if you're going to be say, printing a book a photo printer isn't the best choice because the quality is definitely inferior on that level. As for HP cameras I've never had any personal luck with them. As the previous poster stated HP camera's are 'ok' but for true quality I'd look at another brand. I'm a very big fan of Canons, but Nikons are also solid pieces of machinery, along with the sonys, in terms of reliable picture quality and satisfaction.

Question : I'm looking for an instruction manuel for a hewlett packard camera. model 618?
have no instruction manuel for a model 618 hp digital camera. I'd like to find the web site where I could order one, the flash is not working. Not having the manuel, I can't find in the menu where the flash might be turned off.
Answer:
good luck. they never made an instruction manual so you'll be looking a long time. HP began outsourcing their camera manual writing at the time the 618 was produced. The first manual was written in Hindi and Farsi but not in English (I assume you're an English speaker? ) By the time HP rectified the problem using their Farsi translation software the camera was already obsolete and defective. There has been a class action lawsuit filed in Hosuton Superior Court over this issue and the Judge is considering placing a moratorium and injunction on future HP products

Question : How to import photo's from HP E427 camera to iPhoto on Mac?
Right, here's the problem,I have a Hewlett Packard E427 digital camera. I have no Hewlett Packard software. I'm trying to import photo's from the camera to iPhoto on my macbook. When I connect the camera to the macbook using USB, iPhoto opens automatically but doesn't give me an (obvious) option to import the photo's.According to Hewlett Packard, you do not have to use their software to import photo's.What am I doing wrong? It's driving me crazy! Thanks.
Answer:
Here a few problems I see:1) Do you have the lastest update of iPhoto2) Go do the side of your iPhoto and look for HPE4273) If that doesnt show up, try it out on a friends Mac or Windows4) If all fails get a SD card reader, their like $20 so it snot that big of a deal.
