Great for the Beginning Hobbyist Who Wants to Learn More

I never buy anything without researching, especially when it comes to electronics. After over a month of reading reviews and comparison shopping, I decided that the Kodak EasyShare Z915 was the right camera for my needs. I am a very amateur photographer, but I have aspirations of one day being more of a serious hobbyist. I could not afford digital DSL, but wanted more than a point and shoot. I wanted to be able to learn and experiment with the mysteries of aperture, white balance and more, along with a strong zoom lens. After less than two months of playing, I'm by no means a much better photographer, but I sure am having a great time learning! My understanding of basic photographic concepts is increasing, I feel free to experiment, and my wallet isn't much lighter than it would have been had I bought grande lattes for a month straight! Great camera for the beginning hobbyist who wants to learn. Only con so far...can't stand the Kodak software, but when I tried to disable, I had a difficult time downloading from camera. I know there's a trick, but I haven't quite figured it out yet. If someone out there has, would love to know!

Great Camera, Especially for the Price

I personally quite enjoy this camera. I am photographer as a hobby and take several hundred pictures a month. It serves me well.
Pros
-The 10X zoom is wonderful. I often shoot nature, and it's great to be able to get "close" to whatever you're shooting.
- Many of the controls are physical. Meaning, you don't have to dig through a bunch of menus to set up your shot
-It's size is quite go for what it can do, it's not going to fit in every pocket, but it's still decently small.
- AA batteries are nice instead of s proprietary rechargeable. SD cards are good function too.

Cons
-Contrary to it's name. I don't find it an "easy-share." as it will only import pictures to it's kodak program. I use my old camera so I can import them without the program.
-The flash isn't too great.
-I really want a camera with a manual focus, as it can really be a pain to focus on EXACTLY what I want it to, most times it's ok though.
-the video is kinda noisy at times
-the zoom could be faster. It probably takes 5 seconds to zoom all the way in and focus

In terms of value, this is a great buy. If you're going to only be taking pictures of you and your friends or family, good luck finding a quality camera at this price. If you plan to do some serious photography, or lots of video, consider an upgrade

Really pleased!

Although my heart yearns for a professional DSLR camera, my wallet realizes it will be a while before I possess one. I decided to upgrade my old 4 MP camera for this one, and I am really glad I did! The shots I have taken so far are superb! The camera is really easy to use, and pictures are easy to upload (with or WITHOUT the EasyShare software). This is not a slim, skinny camera, but that's just fine with me. I will gladly sacrifice putting a camera in my pocket for photos like these.

Great Quality Cam at Very Low Price.

This is an excellent quality, high zoom, very lightweight, easy to carry, Kodak camera for a bargain basement price. How anyone who knows anything at all about photography, including beginners, can not get a good pic out of this model camera is beyond me. The fact that it also has a nice, in camera stitch feature, for panoramic scenes up to 3 panels wide makes it an even better deal.

But, first, let's address some of the myths created by those that rated this cam with only a 1 or 2 star rating.

"Cam comes with very poor manual."

Gee, do you think you might take 5 minutes and download the extended user's manual for this specific model and actually STUDY or at least READ it, if you can not figure this cam out on your own. It has an internal guideline system for even beginners built on the menu system, but still may be too much for some to digest and actually use.
_ _ _ _

" It eats batteries like nothing I have ever seen."

Amazing. They ALL use up and drain non-rechargeable batteries quickly. Buy a good set of rechargeable batteries like Eneloops and this problem is solved.
_ _ _ _

"The video sound is extremely muted."

Take your finger or thumb off the microphone. If you looked at the diagram supplied,
you would know where it is, and it is very easy to cover it up without realizing it.
_ _ _ _

"The quality of the photos is mixed, and it takes very poor pics indoors."

Odd, when you are consistent, using good standard practices, you can obtain
consistently good results. The ONLY thing causing mixed results, is the inconsistent actions of the user.

Regarding the poor pics indoors or in low light conditions, the vast majority of cams with sensors as small
as standard point and shoots are going to perform in a mediocre manner. This one performs no worse than several on the market that are far more expensive.
_ _ _ _

"This cam is all plastic and feels like it would break easily if dropped."

News Flash! Even a high quality all metal expensive cam may have the lens damaged by a
single drop, and be made non operational. DO NOT DROP IT!!!

_ _ _ _

The list goes on, and I will not bother addressing the rest of the comedy acts from fantasy land. Go to dpreview, or just look on this site at some of the examples of the photos taken. This is a VERY LOW PRICED budget cam that can often be obtained for around $100, and sometimes less than that. Out of all these whiners, complainers, moaners, and groaners, only a single one recommended something else by name, that he thought was better in the same price range. BUT, when I looked up that model, not only did it cost a minimum of $60 more, but it was not 10X. It was either 3 or 4X zoom putting it in an entirely different category, and it had some weaknesses I have not seen on this model at all.

The Kodak Z915 has 10X optical zoom, with 5X advanced digital zoom, for a total combined zoom capability of 50X. For such an inexpensive camera, while not perfect it is quite capable. It also has a quick turn around time in between shots, and overall works surprisingly well.

Super Camera!!!

This small, adorable camera takes clear clean shots- the 10x zoom is incredible. My only complaint is that it wasn't available in red. It came prompty (I ordered just before vacation) I have enlarged several shots to 8x10 and the quality is fantastic

Captures Life's Special Moments with Ease

This is my 3rd EasyShare. The first was dropped into water and stopped working. The 2nd ended up with a cracked screen (though it still took great pics!). After the last one broke, I thought I'd just look on Amazon or go to Best Buy and get the up-graded model, mine was only a year old afterall. NOPE. Can't stand the new model. The buttons are too close together, hard to navigate, etc. So I started searching high and low online for the old model or just an up-grade or so. Finally found it at *gulp* Wal-mart (where I paid about half of what you see quoted above).

I LOVE this model. Very similar to my last one, but easier to use. The layout is very functional, settings are easy to manipulate, and I get great pics everytime.

Friends have much more expensive cameras and while they're struggling to get them out of their fancy camera cases and change all the settings, I just pull my EasyShare out of my pocket, point, and click. I've captured the moment and they've let it pass.

This is an easy to use camera, great quality, at a reasonable price.

I do have to say, though, that the EasyShare SOFTWARE stinks. I've had it crash several computers and never have gotten it to work. My mil's computer also died after she installed it. You don't need it. I just use either my HP printer software or Windows photo. Don't bother loading the Kodak software.

11 yr. birthday present

I purchased this as a birthday present for my 11 year old niece. Lucky for me she loves the color green. (green was on sale even cheaper) I didn't want to spend too much for it because she's 11, but I wanted something that would take great pictures/movies. She loved it. It was her favorite present. She won't stop taking pictures and now her mom's camera is safe. I can understand why it doesn't come with a memory card, but I think all cameras should come with some kind of case. It bothered me that I had to buy a case from another seller. charging and connecting to the computer are easy-it came with that cord. Using all the settings is a little confusing for her because there are a lot, but she's figuring it out. All in all a good purchase.

So Slow

I recently purchased this camera to update my old Kodak camera. I decided to purchase this one because it was similar to my old one. So far, the camera is easy to use and easy to transport; however, the time it takes to let me take another picture is too long. When I read reviews there was no mention of the delay in between pictures, but there should be! There is about a 15 second delay in between taking a picture and being able to take the next, which is a lot of time! Overall, the camera is not bad but I would look into getting a different brand if you want to take those "in the moment" pictures.

Rating :

Not worth the money!

Bought the camera after reading the reviews, it sounded like a safe buy, especially for the price.

Here is what I like: daytime picture quality, size, battery life.

Dislike: you can't see the screen in the sun, its not bright at all!!

also, HORRIBLE night time picture quality, and i mean really bad.

one more: my old digital camera (canon powershot) had an easy to find power button (it was elevated). in other words, i could stick my hand in my pocket and push the ON button while i was pulling the camera out, which is great for those spontaneous shots. With this camera, I find that i have to pull it out, then find the button, then turn it on. Its just a poor design by Kodak.

Video quality isn't great, and the sound picked up by the mic is pretty bad.

The interface for deleting pictures is awkward too: you have to press the delete button, then move the cursor up to select that you want to delete the picture. after it deletes the picture, it takes you to the next picture and asks if you want to delete it as well, when it should in fact just take you back to picture taking mode, or a plain preview mode.

sorry for the long negative review, but i really am disappointed by this one. I am now buying a new panasonic because i don't dare to take this one with me to a trip out west.

my review after a year of my life with it, owning it, destroying it, and repairing it and still using it

i bought this a year ago after the desire to switch from the much larger z760. this camera went on sale at office depot for $99.99 with a free camera case. so i bought it and sold my old one for $50. basically, it was a fifty dollar upgrade for twice the mp and twice the preview screen and better overall coloring.

i'm very picky about every investment i make and i looked into this model--and a few key others--for several months before purchasing. there are standards i look for in any camera and these are those standards:

-is it easy to use, or will it infuriate my woman

-does it have a nice display screen, and can you kill the screen to conserve battery life while still shooting

-does it have a strong many favorable reviews

-it has to have a li-ion battery--the days of aa's and rechargeable aa's is long gone, the li-ions last a month and charge in forty minutes

-is it sturdy, of quality construction

-it must use an sd card, because of the universality of secure digitals i feel more secure taking them to any store for the occasional printing

-does it feel good in your hand

-does it have a view finder

this little guy passed everything except the viewfinder.. i do miss that function because when you are taking wide angle shots with heavy zoom, it is easier to center a pict through a view finder than a screen; plus on a bright day the viewfinder is easier to see than the lcd screen. but i deal with that because it is a minor desire and the rest is the most important.

this camera can be easy to use by setting the automatic flash, or you can advance it if you wish for specific targets like the dew on a peddle or the yawn of a puppy. for our household, we need a fairly universal camera. my woman cares less about capturing details than about capturing memories. i prefer to gather both at once. so the camera has to be easy to function for her and also offer the functionality of someone in desire of more pristine captures.

this does it all.

i have not used the software that came with the camera. i never use the software. it's my opinion that the less software on my computer the better. computers are easier to police for maleware and spyware if you maintain minimal programs on them. that is why i choose sd card cameras. sd cards are the most universal.

i did destroy this camera once by knocking it from a shelf into a cold cup of coffee. the camera fit perfectly and the camera submerged completely. it was so dead.. i had to take it completely apart and dry everything out. (the first thing i did was remove the battery and sd card.) i took a blow dryer to the lens, that was the last to dry off. i had to do that several times before the lens would remain clear, before it would not continue to fog up.

all back together, that was months ago and the camera still works perfectly.
i am not a man to put belongings in cases. that is why i do not purchase cheaply made items. i use them. abuse them. there are scratches on the lens and dings on the unit. i have dropped it plenty of times and even gave it a swim in cold coffee, and this unit stands up the way i expect it to: completely and without disappointment. i recommend it to the casual memory collector. it shoots black and white, high color, natural color, low color, and sepia. you can change the pixels in use to conserve sd card storage, and you can designate the type of shot you want to capture--landscape or up-close or motion or daylight or cloudy..

also, this unit has a max card capacity of 4gb hcsd/sd card. so dont buy an eight or sixteen gig card and expect to use that in full function. though, with a 4gig card at max settings, this card will capture almost two thousand pictures. i shoot several times in order to try and capture perfect individual shots and deal with the editing later, but even in akumal, mx for a full week, i only took six hundred photos. that's not a whole lot, but it's also not a few.. a two gig card--for a thousand picture--is all you need and those are very cheap now too. so this camera, in my estimation, is a great investment for the casual family or home shooter. economical and versatile, you cant ask for more.

( except maybe a viewfinder ha )

p.s.- i think i'll add a video review later. though a bit grainy for a "480p" video feature, the vid functions well in favorable lighting. outside, too, though if there is wind present it will remain present in the home vid. though, i can only preach that if you are in need of a camera AND a camcorder, that you purchase both. camera home videos are often not as clear as the desired effect sought. that's my take.

This camera is great for it's price!

I did not buy this camera from Amazon. I bought it through Walmart in August 2008. The only down fall is trying to use the lens for a macro lens. And night pictures.

I paid $200.00 for mine plus the 2 year extended warranty for just in case. At first I started having the problem of it eating my batteries and learned that rechargeable batteries were the key. And also at times it has a long processing time in between pictures, and even more when switching from pictures to videos.

If you want a perfect camera go for the $700.00 Canon Rebel ( A real camera) Or if you want something, easy and useful then get this one. I am actually passing mine down to my parents soon.

I would absolutely buy this camera again...

Poor Customer Service

If you do buy this camera, BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WITH IT! I dropped mine about 2.5 feet on carpet and the lens still got stuck! Kodak's customer service is HOPELESS. They think everything can be solved by just replacing the batteries, and the cost for repair might as well go towards a new camera. I would not recommend this camera because even though this camera is decent, there are much better ones out there.

I bought this camera to replace my bulkier Zsomethin Kodak Easyshare. It was $170 when I bought it. I will be short with this review. The camera feels cheap, which doesnt really matter to me, but when my friends use it they comment on it. I hyped this camera up so much before I bought and now I feel like a fool. I took it with me out on a trip up north at the end of summer. It takes really bad low light photos like moon shots, bonfires, even on the proper settings. I feel like my close ups dont come out unless I use flash and then it is too bright. Some days the pictures are good, the next day I am swearin at the cam. I tried to return it to Walmart, where I bought it and they wouldn't take it back because I didn't have the original, non rechargeable batteries. Who really keeps the original pair of dead batteries? I would have given it more stars because it is very compact and It fits nicely in my purse. It takes great day time photos and has captured some spectacular sunsets, but then again, so does every other compact camera...

Strong offering from Kodak, but not perfect

After having used my Kodak Slice camera for a few hours here are my initial thoughts: overall I like the camera very much, and imagine I'll be using it a great deal, BUT it's not perfect.

Positives: I really like the look of the camera. (I got it in black.) The front of the camera is rather featureless but attractive in a utilitarian sort of way. The back is dominated by a very large touchscreen. The top buttons are raised slightly and surrounded by translucent plastic that lights up and blinks when the camera is charging or connected to a computer. (It works with both Macs and PCs, so Apple owners need not worry.) It'll comfortably fit in most pockets. It's not as ultraslim as some other cameras in the price range, but overall I very much like how it feels when holding it.

I find most cameras' controls frustrating: It's never immediately obvious how to do simple things like turn off the flash, adjust scene settings, etc. I eventually figure it out, but everyone seems to do it a little differently, and figuring out which little switch to push in which direction is tedious. I really like the Slice's touchscreen: it does almost everything except take the picture and zoom in/out. It's nicely responsive: not as good as the screens on more expensive smartphones like iPhones or the better Droids, but nevertheless does the job well. It's size is wonderful for previewing pictures you just took, and the layout of the menus and controls are obvious for the most part.

One thing that may be confusing to some is the idea of the 'Slice Album'. When Kodak refers to '5000 pictures' on your camera, they're talking about the small versions of every photo you take that get retained in the camera's memory in what they call the 'Slice Album'. These are NOT full photos, but rather scaled down versions that remain on the camera. Every time you take a picture and don't immediately delete it, the camera will not only save the full-sized image in memory, but also save the smaller version into the 'Slice Album', where it will stay indefinitely. Eventually when you transfer the image off the camera and delete it, the full-sized copy goes away, but the smaller 'Slice Album' version does NOT. There's a small review button to the left of the other buttons on the top of the camera, and when you press that, even when the camera is off, you will see all the photos in your Slice Album and search by tag or look through them sequentially. The benefit of this is that your camera is always carrying a copy of the last several thousand photos you've taken in your Slice Album, and they're always there to show someone from your camera. Think of it as a gallery of large 'thumbnails' always available to show people. Another nice thing about the Slice Album is that you can also tag your photos in various ways (location, keyword, people), and have the 1000s of photos available to show someone as long as you have your camera with you, and you can quickly search via tags for that one photo or set of photos you want to show them.

You really do want to get some microSD memory to give yourself some 'legroom' for the full-sized photos (I found some cheap class 6 Transcend microsd cards on Amazon for about $20 each, so I got two and now have 16gb of space, and since I have two cards I can use one for everyday and one for special trips, etc..) Overall the Slice Album is a very clever idea, but Kodak isn't doing themselves any favors by not describing it more thoroughly, and leading people to think the camera stores thousands of full-sized photos, which is NOT what it is doing.

I'd say image quality is very good, but not excellent. (Keep in mind I just take casual photos, so I'm no judge of professional quality). Photos aren't always quite as sharp as I'd like when using its autofocus, but the colors are nice, and the 14MP is more than enough for my needs. It's easy to switch into video mode, and other than the camera occasionally struggling to maintain focus I liked the quality. Facial recognition seemed to work well, and image stabilization also worked well: I didn't notice much blurring to my motions, and I'm not always the steadiest when it comes to taking pictures. (In fact, i'm a bit of a klutz...)

I like the idea of the 'Share Button' a lot, but the implementation is a mixed bag: on the good side, it's pretty slick that I can set up several share destinations (facebook, flickr, the Kodak Gallery, and e-mail addresses of my choice amongst others), and then for each picture I've taken I can quickly get to a sharing screen and check off what destination(s) to send it to. Then, the next time I sync to my PC/Mac it will pull the photos/videos over to the computer, and then send them off to their appropriate destinations. I was able to easily send photos to Facebook, Flickr, and the Kodak Gallery with little effort. I was also able to set up e-mail destinations for my TwitPic and TwitVid accounts, and shared pictures and videos with similar ease.

Cons:

As mentioned above, some pictures focus was less sharp than I'd want when using autofocus, and in videos it would blur then re-focus a little more often than I'd expect.

While the Share Button app is a great idea, there's still a few ways it should be fleshed out: For starters, where's Twitter?!? I set up TwitPic and TwitVid e-mail addresses manually, but it would be nice to have Twitter as a pre-set destination just like Facebook and the others. On my first batch of synced photos, one that I had marked to send to my TwitPic e-mail didn't make it through, even though the app claimed all photos were sent successfully. A second batch were delivered to their destinations fine, including TwitPic. You also can't specify what message goes along with your photos or videos, they just get a generic message like 'New pictures from my KODAK camera'. Being able to specify a custom comment would make this much more flexible.

They already have a firmware update out, but you must have a microsd card and a pc or netbook that can write to it, in order to install the update. You download it to your PC/laptop, unzip it (a step they fail to mention in their instructions!!!), and then move the *unzipped file* onto your microsd card. (The Transcend microsd cards I got came with a standard SD adapter so I could insert them into my laptop's reader.) Once you have the file on the microsd card you insert it into the camera and then the next time you turn it on the camera will ask if you want to update the firmware. It would be better if you didn't have to go through all that to do a firmware update, and could just do it via the USB connection like many other devices do. But at least they ARE providing firmware updates, so that's a good thing!

Summary:

Overall, I think the Slice is a solid camera that is easy to use with nice styling, and that (with some room for improvement) makes it easy to share photos to multiple destinations. At its list price there's lots of very strong competition that give it a good run for its money, but at the price Amazon and others are currently selling it at, it's a more compelling product that I'm very happy with.

Slice really cuts it for me and my family

OK, I shoot with a DSLR. I'm cool. I'm a a photographer wannabe. But my wife insists we have a more family oriented camera that she can carry. Where she is involved it means it must look cool, not cute but cool, it must be stlylish and compact, sleek and fashionable. Sound familiar? But most importantly, to her, it must be simple to use, rugged - imaging riding through life in her purse.... - and it must make actually seeing and sending and showing off her (our) pictures a no brainer.

So Slice is selected. Does it cut it? It certainly looks good. It has a touchscreen LCD. It has a human interface (instead if a technical cryptic interface), it takes great pictures (not DSLR quality but close in some cases and not as close in difficult situations - but it's not a DSLR). But here is where it made the grade and got by the 'wife factor' it's a slam dunk to take, share, send, categorize and get really involved with the pictures she (we) take. It's something like 3 steps to send pictures to facebook and to eamil them to the kids. It's a gas to watch it recognize faces and tag them as the poor subjects they are.... and then there is this Album thing.

Imagine just taking all the pictures you want, do what you want with them, but secretly the Slice camera tucks away a copy in an Album. Up to something like 4 or 5 thousand. When mom meets up for lunch and complains she hasn't seen the kids in months, my wife just whips out the Slice and brings her up to date months at a time. It's a really nice feature in a camera.

I almost never review anything I buy. I'm a gadget hound and it would take up half my spare time. But if a camera can make me the hero that Slice did in my wife's eyes - I must review it. And if you are a husband - in the most classic sense, you know what I mean - get your little wifey a Slice at the next oppotune time. You will owe me big time.

Terrible quality shots

I bought this for the features and the looks and let me tell you - all it has are the looks. I had a kodak for years and consider myself a semi-professional photographer while I do not do it for a living. I loved my other kodak but this one has terrible focus- all the photos are blurry no mattter what I do to the settings and trust me I tried everything- I called support and the first thing they said was it could be a little blurry on auto- isn't the point of auto to get a great shot with not a lot of work- even with picking a scene selection the shots were fuzzy and looked like they were taken with a 2 mp camera- it was terrible- even image quality on the screen was a bit blurry-

Now lets discuss the screen- touch screen nice idea- but down side- scrolling stinks- not user friendly and when taking a pic you can accidentaly hit the screen and change things mid shot- what a waste- also the lens is too close to the egde on the front making it very easy to get your fingers in the shot since you have to hold it near the side/front cause it is flat with a touch screen covering the whole back-

I returned it and am now looking into a sony cybershot 350 or cannon powershot 1300- I have truly lost faith in kodak and am trying my hand at a different camera brand altogether-

Save yourself the hassle and go with a different camera- not this one

Kodak Slice Camera

I really like the ease of use with this camera. The touch screen navigation is very easy to use. I also like that the camera can store up to 5000 photos. The picture quality is excellent with the color being right on. The video is ok but there is almost no sound when you play back the video in the camera. It has good volume when played back on my computer. The screen is so large that in bright sun light it had a glare that makes it hard to see what you are taking a picture of.

This camera is a waste

A big dissapointment. Battery life is terrible. Controls are hard to use. Touch screen is not always responsive.
Picture quality is only fair with this camera and no in camera corrections can be made.

Question : Can i somehow put filters on my tiny kodak digital camera??
I have a small kodak digital camera, it's just plain digital. It doesn't even have a "mm" sized lense. Just a regular digital camera. is there a way to adapt lenses to it? would they be effective if i had to rig up something? or would the become deffective because of the distance between the lens and the filter?

Answer:
what sort of filters do you want to add to it? in this age of digital photography the only useful filter would be a UV filter for protection, any other effects could be replicated in digital editing. If you do want effects without editing, you could get away with holding up a filter to the lens but, really, why? and yes, the further you hold from the lens, the more distortion you will get. but hey, try it. no harm can come...

Question : How do I create a photo and save it on the memory card for Kodak digital camera?

Question : Kodak Digital camera, c653, got dampened in water is it repairable?
I got the kodak c653 digital camera which got dampened, can it be repaired if yes whom do i need to show? i stay at hyderabad, please suggest..

Answer:
Electronics and water don't go well together. If it works after drying out, great. If not, the water probably caused a short circuit which would make it doubtful that it can be repaired. However, I've seen electronics survive water damage, but the battery was ruined. You might get lucky and get by with only having to get a new battery.
