Nice little pocket toy, only the macro setting does not work
I picked up this camera x-mas time, it works well mostly. of any non-pro camera i have used it best mimics the results i am used to getting with a 35mm SLR in low light. I would love to keep this camera, however...
the macro setting does not focus. I have already exchanged the camera once at the point of sale, and the second camera had the exact same issue as the first. the camera as it tries to focus does at some point display an object at close range (with the macro setting on) in focus, but almost every time fails to select the correct focus when taking the shot. the resulting image is out of focus, regardless of the lighting condition. this is the poorest performance for marco shooting i have ever experienced from a pocket digital camera, regardless of brand.
as well customer support was useless - the web site has not responded to my query for more than a week now, and agents i spoke to on the phone were completely incapable of helping me, or even logging a complaint about the issue.
what looks like a sleek capable piece of equipment for shooting on the sly (no protruding lens) is definitely, not going to come through for those under cover operations... just try to take a detail shot of those classified documents and you'll give yourself a headache trying to read the fine print. not just a let down for the spy on the go... but if you want to get the detail on a flower petal, or a piece of art - this camera just doesn't cut it.
if the kinks get worked out this camera does have potential

Fantastic
This is a great point and shoot! I'll be testing out at a concert here in the near future so I can give a more detailed review, but so far I'm loving it! I wouldn't say that this is for serious photographers, but for people on the go that need something small to take great pictures, this is your camera!!! More later!

Excellent Point and Shoot
Pros: Great vivid photos in good light, excellent design, non-protruding lens, slim and easy to carry. Cons: Weak flash which is prone to red-eye, movie mode which is good but the sound cuts out a second or two before video stops (I've had a few Nikon point and shoots and they all do this!), can get noisy in low light conditions, slightly slow autofocus. Overall, I really like the Nikon S52. For a point and shoot with a non-extending lens, I like this the most (I've had Sony DSC-T2 and T77. The Picture Project software is also pretty good for editing photos. Bottom line for me is the great photos it takes. As long as you work within it's limitations (weak flash and not too stellar autofocus), then you'll be very satisfied.

Great Freakin Camera!!!
This is a great camera!!! The only drawback to this camera is the time it takes for the flash to re-charge...otherwise a truly great piece of equipment!!! I've taken it on every trip since I got in June and just love it!!! Learning the "modes" has proven a bit of a challenge, but well worth it for that one good picture!!

Customer Review :
GPS doesn't work so not worth buying.
I bought this camera so I could have a good compact camera with integral GPS to automatically tag photos with their locations. I ordered the camera with 2 day shipping. Wall Street Photo didn't ship until after I sent them an email five days after I placed the order. They did send it with 2 day shipping however. I have the used the camera for over a month. Picture quality is good. Usability is fair. The image capture time is very slow slow which means you can't shoot several pictures in rapid succession. The power on/off switch is poor and often has to be pressed several times.
The fatal flaw however is the GPS which is so insensitive that it simply doesn't work. In the entire time I've used the camera I have gotten a GPS lock only once. Without the GPS there is no reason to pay the higher cost of this camera.
I emailed Wall Street asking for a refund and received no response. Now I tried Amazon. I do not recommend either this camera or Wall Street Photo. Amazon needs to take a closer look at its partners.Nikon Coolpix S6000 14 MP Digital Camera with 7x Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Black)

If I could find the receipt I would return it. To pay an outrageous premium for a feature and have it not ever work is appalling.

A Rock Solid Camera With Some Serious Issues
Ok, first off, i would like to give you an idea about how well i know this camera. During the summer of 2009, i biked across America with this camera. And later today, I leave for Tanzania for 5 weeks to climb Kilimanjaro (I'll update this review with this camera's performance). I have had a lot of time to go seriously in depth with this camera, and there are things I love, and things I loathe.
BUILD QUALITY: you can't really tell from the pictures, but it is built like a tank. The body feels like it is mostly metal, a blessing on my bike trip where I had one serious accident that the camera fortunately survived (the back wheel of my bike on the other hand, did not do quite as well). The buttons feel a little mushy, but other than that, its a solid camera.
SCREEN: it's not huge, but it gets the job done.
ISO: this is not a strong point of the camera, at the low end, the noise is negligible, but once you start cranking up the ISO, you get a lot of noise.
PICTURE QUALITY: the picture quality is pretty good, however, unlike Nikon DSLR's it does not boost the contrast to the famous "Nikon Standard" in camera. I wish it did, but it all comes down to personal preference, and editing can be done back on a computer.
GPS CAPABILITY: this was one of the first cameras with GPS built in, and it is, to say the least, "meh." It takes an absurdly long time to get a lock, and don't even think about trying to get a lock indoors or anything less than an open field. And try not to move either, it will throw it off. But fortunately, once it has a lock, it is very stable and it is very hard for the camera to lose the lock.
BATTERY LIFE: it is a pretty bad battery, not a newer generation type, and the inefficient GPS module kills it quickly. I have higher hopes for the [hypothetical] P7000 in this regard.
OVERALL: a meh camera, but that's what you get for being on the cutting edge. Hopefully the P7000 will have a superior GPS chip, a better battery, and less noise. if they can do that, i would buy it on in a heartbeat. But for now, I would buy one of the Sony [Sony DSC-HX5V], Samsung [Samsung HZ35W], Or Panasonic [Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7] P&S cameras if GPS is important to you

Great Point and Shoot!
I'm just going to give basic views here because there are a lot of great reviews.
I've already taken several thousand photos with this camera and am very pleased with the daylight shots. It excels in good light at ISO 100 to 400. I've set the color enhancement to vivid as I've done with my Canons and the colors come out rich and beautiful! If too much color or I want B&W, I make changes via iPhoto - a very simple process. The photos are crisp, clean and the camera focuses quickly and very well.
Low light situations will require a tripod and some manual adjustments. If it goes over ISO 400, the noise is miserable and the photo is virtually worthless. To avoid that, you will need to use a tripod , which I have only done a couple times since my Canon S2IS does a better job in low lights.
The GPS does take some time to obtain a signal so does not work right away. When it works, it works very well. To that end, I can just add the basic location data to the photos that are missing the information through my software when I download the photos to iPhoto. It's not difficult but can be time consuming. Sadly, I think this was Nikon's first and last consumer level GPS enabled camera. They should have worked on improving it instead of only developing the one model.
The pop-up flash works fine. I've seen some complaints about it but I have no issues and find it adequate in normal situations.
Movie mode is a great disappointment. The microphone does not pick up sound very well and the video quality is just ok. My Canon S2IS does stereo recording and allows the full use of the 10x optical zoom lens during video recording. This newer camera appears to only allow digital zoom. Oh well.
Overall, I love this camera and have no regrets and will keep it for a long time. Nikon, if you had continued to develop the GPS in your models, you would have been on to something great. As it stands, I'm switching again to add the new Sony HX5V to my collection (we always carry two cameras) so that there will be two with GPS. Thank you for getting me hooked on the geotagging - I can't live without it!

Frustrating! What's Gone Wrong with Nikon???
I haven't been able to get the P6000 to work. When I first turned it on, the multi-selector did not work so I could not get the camera set up. I called Nikon and after a long hold, I reached Nikon support. They said to send it to them via an (expensive) overnight service, which cost me twenty bucks or so (plus the inconvenience of a trip to town). Eventually the camera came back. It still did not work, in fact, it won't even turn on.
I thought maybe it was my battery so I ordered a new one. Finally that came and I charged it and tried the camera again. Nothing. It won't turn on.
So I called Nikon tech support again. Held for 5 minutes and got disconnected. Called again. After another long hold, I got someone who said they would send me a label for returning it with the shipping paid by them this time. Which is what I'll do, but frankly this is an imposition.
I've had several Nikons in the past and they were great. Apparently this one is a lemon. But judging from the slow phone support and the fact that a defective camera was returned unrepaired, the company is not dedicated to quality service any more.

Questions & Answers
Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are:Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-NikkorNikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models? Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT?Thanks.
Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused.Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker.http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htmhttp://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibili ty-lens.htmJust a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm.As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT. Hope this helps.

Question : Will the lenses and flash bulbs of an older Nikon camera be compatable with the newer digital Nikon cameras?
A family member of mine purchased an older semi-professional Nikon camera in the early '90s, and he was wondering if his flash bulb and lenses, also bought new around the same time, would be compatible with a new digital Nikon camera.Advance thanks for any help provided : )
Answer:
I am guessing you mean speedlight or flash and not flashbulb. There are probably only a small percentage of the folks on here that have actually ever used a flash bulb. But I know where you are comming from ~lol~ It depends on the speedlight and lens but probably so . Any speelight with a low enough sync voltage like the SB-25 can be used I will link a chart so you can check the flash. If you do not know the sync voltage or if the chart says its above 12 V for Nikon ( 6 volt for Canon) get a wein hot shoe to hot shoe safe sync slave and you can use any speedliht with that between the speedlight and the cameraHere is the chart http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.htmlNow as to lenses any lens that is AI, AF, AFd, AFs or AFi can be used On some cameras pre AI lenses can also be used ( D40/D60) Others they cannot mount on unless they have been AI converted Yours are probably AF or AFd if they were made in the 90s as they started making them in 1986 and they are still made today, AI lenses will never autofocus they were manual focuse cameras. In addition only AFs and AFi lenses will autofocus on the D40/D40x or D60AI lenses will not meter on D100, D90, D80, D79, D60,D50 or D40. They will not matrix meter on the D1 though they will center weight and spot meter, they meter on all other Nikon dSLRI routinely use lenses from the 70s on my cameras ( D40 and D300) . Feel free to email me with specifics on the camera, lens and spedlight you have gotten. BTW That old film SLR still probably takes great pictures also so keep it around in case you get a yearning to shoot film oneday

Question : Is there a certain printer for the nikon digital camera?
i just bought a nikon s70 touch screen digital camera and i want to buy a printer for it, is there a specific printer i need for it and if so whats it called?
Answer:
No there is not, but I think if you want a printer, that you should check out the Epson printers. They have a selection of printers and are very well respected for quality. Also, you may want to investigate photo lab options. Below are 2 links to help you research, one is to Epson's website and the other to Mpix an online lab that offers some possibilities.Hope this helps.Mark

Question : If I'm looking for a very professional Nikon digital camera, what would be a recommendation?
If I'm looking for a very professional digital camera, probably not SLR, what would be a recommendation? I need something with a very GOOD macro setting. I'm pretty sure I'll be buying a Nikon, and I'm also curious about CoolPix. This camera I plan on using for artistic photos, so I'm searching for really nice quality - not a little rectangular box used to take pictures of the family BBQ, you know? hahaha. thanks for taking the time to read this.

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!
Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's.Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLRThere are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : Looking fo a good lens for good price for my Nikon digital camera?
this is my camera i needa better lens that zooms in ad out more than the 18-55 lens!!Megapixels: 6.1 Megapixels Optical Zoom: 3 X Lens System Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm lens LCD Screen Size: 2.5 in Recording Method SDHC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital (SD) Card Camera Type Digital camera - SLR
Answer:
I suggest you stick with Nikon lenses. The original manufacturers lenses are almost always better. A very popular choice right now is the Nikkor 18-200mm zoom. I provided a link below. It is not the cheapest lens out there but it has a great zoom range. For most people this is the only lens they will ever need.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/408518-USA/Nikon_2159_18_200mm_f_3_5_5_6G_ED_IF_AF_S.html

Question : Do I need a special flash for my Nikon Digital Camera?
I need a larger flash for my Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital Camera with a hot shoe, and would love to be able to use the trusty Vivitar Thrysistor 283 that worked so well with my old SLR, but the Nikon manual warns that flashes not specifically made for Nikon Digital Cameras may damage the camera through some kind of electronic feedback. Are they just trying to sell me a $300 flash unit, or is this a valid concern?
Answer:
Yup, it is possible for an old flash to fry a camera due to the trigger voltages. You can check this site for more info on that http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html. Cross reference your flash against the table there. In any case, using an older flash would probably mean a loss of i-ttl (for nikon) or e-ttl (for canon). You would need to use auto/manual flash then. In addition, the camera may also act funny (e.g. my old metz on my canon 20D will always give me a 1/200 f5.6 on program mode. I have to use it in manual mode instead.
