Great Camera

We have had this camera since 2005. It has been a great little camera for our family. Lots of nifty settings, video. This camera is also sturdy. It has been neglected on so many family vacations, left in 100+ heat for hours, dropped numerous times, chewed on, and it still works great.

Great "low-end" camera

The camera is extremely easy to use, and does a great job with either pictures or video. When we first "went digital", this was the camera we chose, and were thrilled with it (5 MP was the "standard" then). When that camera was accidentally dropped on the lens and broke, I looked at the "new" offerings (more megapixels, more features), but decided nothing could beat our good old reliable Coolpix 5600 for the price, so bought another one just like our original on Amazon.com. We still love it!

Nikon COOLPIX 5600 Digital Camera

This product replaced an identical one that someone had stolen from me. Therefore, I mainly wanted to make sure it operated as it should. It did not disappoint.

However, I have to mention that the shipper put a sharp cornered box into a sturdy padded envelope that fell apart before it arrived. The shipper should have taken the camera out of the box or enclosed it in another box with peanuts.

zero stars... Not worth it!

IF your hand is steady and your subjects are willing to stay still for the series of flashes that go off before the final flash that takes the pictures, you do get a decent picture. However, if you are interested in taking spontaneous shots versus posed, this is NOT the camera for you. The camera shuts off for about 10 seconds in between taking shots.

Editorial Review :

The Nikon Coolpix 990 takes all the features of its popular predecessor, the Coolpix 950, and improves upon them. This 3.34-megapixel CCD offers true (noninterpolated) image resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 for easy cropping and high print quality. The built-in 3x zoom Nikkor lens provides 38-115mm coverage (35mm equivalent) for clear, sharp images with 4x stepless digital zoom. It also features a 1.8-inch low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD screen for easy composition and playback. Nikon's own 256-element matrix metering and white balance promise outstanding exposure and color balance in every image.

Fully automatic with manual capabilities, the Nikon Coolpix 990 provides 4,896-step multi-area autofocus for quick composition without interruption. It provides a built-in five-mode flash and seven capture modes, including 1.5 fps (frames per second) full-resolution image capture, 30 fps QVGA, and 15 fps QVGA movies for 40 seconds in motion-JPEG mode. The 50-step manual focus gives complete creative control, while the macro focus mode allows you to shoot pictures from as close as 0.8 inches. You may choose between shutter priority and aperture priority exposure modes for greater artistic flexibility without added hassle. This camera also accepts all optional Coolpix lenses and accessories, including fisheye, wide angle, and telephoto lenses and up to five Nikon speedlights (with optional bracket) to light up any scene.

Convenience features of the Nikon Coolpix 990 include its easy-to-use and easy-to-upgrade CompactFlash memory (16 MB card provided). This camera is capable of both NTSC and PAL video playback, and it works with both Macintosh and IBM platforms. Although the Nikon Coolpix 990 can connect to your PC via serial connection, it also offers high-speed USB connectivity for plug-and-play simplicity and faster picture downloads.

Still one of the best for 360 photography

I've been using this camera for years now doing digital 360 photography.
What makes this camera great is the len(s) you can get (wide angle & fish eye) which lets you make 360 degree panoramas with the help of software like VRToolbox, and pano-head from Kaidan.

That battery door problem...

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. The image quality, ease of use and features on this camera are very, very good but not worth the original price of nearly $900. However when our company's needs grew I did think it was wise to buy a used one for under $300. Shortly thereafter BOTH cameras experienced the same broken battery cover problem described elsewhere here. A little research revealed vendors who actually sell replacement doors (but alas no instructions on how to complete what seems like a fairly tricky repair). We still use the cameras with tape and cords when possible but buyer beware!

Help

Hello. I bought a used one of these. I cannot find a driver on the internet for it. I read a review that said that Microsoft Vista will not recognize the camera with the USB cord. I don't know. I hope I run across a geek who reads this and get's my email from my profile and emails them too me. I would really appreciate it. Thank you/

Battery compartment replacement ... repair at your own risk!

Suffice it to say, the cp990 battery door and battery compartment issues have been established. For me, it was one of the little plastic catches on the battery compartment that failed (broke). Once the integrity of the tiny plastic catch has been compromised it's either tape-the-door-shut or replace-the-compartment. I was quoted $120 and $150 for the repair at two respectable camera shops. In 2006 this camera can/could be had used at approx $200 or less - I would/did NOT pay to have it repaired. I guess the 'not repairing it' logic would also point to why the cost is so high -- if a camera shop hoses the job, then they'd most likely have to replace the camera. Luckily I found the 'battery compartment' piece on the big auction site and ordered it, cost approx $29 plus shipping. In reality, what would I have lost if I messed the camera up further? For the repair all that was required is a good desk lamp, precision screwdrivers, and patience. I won't turn this rating into a tutorial, I like the camera and it was worth the effort to fix it. Outside the redeye issues, and the toy like battery compartment, this camera beats most 5mp ps cameras hands down.
Repair at your own risk - I did!

Nikon 990 battery door

I have had one or 6 of these excellent cameras with various faults over the years, some with broken lenses and some with broken battery doors - as previously mentioned they knock the spots off most 5 MP current cameras - more megapixels = more noise. They are a simple design and also very easy to dismantle and repair.
The battery door problem can easily be repaired by drilling 2 small holes next to where the tabs have broken off ( through the metal front) and screwing 2 appropriately sized black self tapping screws long enough to catch onto the metal lugs of the door. No need to strip the camera down and it will last as long as the rest of the camera.

After 4 Years -- Here's the Truth

OK, so I've had the Nikon Coolpix 7600 for 4 years now (today is 1/8/10) and I'm ready to upgrade. Here's my experience:

A) Bought it for vacation. Didn't work. Called Nikon while on vacation. Not much help. Customer Service was poor. Took it back to Best Buy after the vaca and had to MAKE them call Nikon and go through all the "problems" before Nikon finally agreed to replace it. Second camera was fine. That must've just been a lemon but I was very frustrated because I wasn't able to use my new camera I had bought for vacation and had to go through all that hassle with Best Buy and Nikon.

B) The photo-editing software that comes with it (Picture Project) is GREAT and I still use it regularly, even though I'm good at Photoshop, because it is quick, user-friendly and has great results.

C) This camera is a little bulky (and heavy) compared to other products that are out there now, and the LCD screen is much smaller than what's available nowadays. This LCD is only about 1.5" wide.

D) This camera is SLOW! I don't know why, but it takes several seconds between shots to prepare itself to take another. I went to Fry's and asked for help on this. They recommended an Ultra SD card, which was supposed to help it save more quickly, but it didn't. This camera is just slow. And, I'm getting increasingly annoyed with it, as I have to say to my subjects, "Wait...hold on a minute before leaving the pose. My camera's just slow."

E) The picture quality is excellent. I mean, really, really, nice. The additional settings are wonderful, too, and really work (once you learn how to properly access them.) The fireworks mode works amazingly! I'm a scrapbooker and love my 4th of July photos!

F) The red-eye auto reduction inherent feature is great, too. I rarely get any red-eye photos, and when I do, it's easy to edit them out on the Picture Project photo-editing software program included.

G) Like some others have mentioned, in the last few months I've started getting Lens Errors, too. No reason, just a malfunction that comes after time with this camera apparently. It's happened to others and it will happen to you, too, if you get it and use it for any sustained amount of time.

H) And, as others have complained, it goes through batteries like there's no tomorrow. I learned this early on, so I simply invested $18 at Sam's club on about 24 AA rechargable batteries and a recharger pack. I keep batteries charging at all times. However, I actually like the fact that this camera is powered by AAs, as it can be very convenient if you forget to charge the "camera battery" or bring it with you. You can stop at any convenience store and buy some AAs and you're ready to go until you get back home and replace with rechargables.

I) Overall--was a good camera for a year or so, but there is so much better out there now, and for a lot more of an affordable price. This isn't worth the investment, as it won't last more than a couple of years. Good luck!

The camera functions are great except that it uses AA batteries instead of the usual nickel ones. I have found they need to be replaced way too often.

Beware

I gave this camera one star because it worked perfect until the store warranty ran out. Then the lens stuck (on this mint condition camera).
I did a google search for "coolpix lens stuck error" and realized that I will have to buy a different brand. I would recommend searching Google before purchasing any Coolpix camera.

Tough and Dependable

I purchased a Coolpix 7600 in July of 2005 to use on a 15,000 mile round trip from my home in far West Texas to the Arctic Ocean at Deadhorse, Alaska. I had no problem learning how to use it and took around 3,000 photos with this camera on the trip. My wife was carrying her state-of-the art Canon $5,000 dollar mega monster. When I transferred the first set of pictures from the 7600 to my laptop and showed them to her she literally turned a different color in total disbelief of the quality of the pictures that I had taken with this camera. She said that the 7600 "Made Love" to the colors because of the quality of the photos. She also said that this camera proved that she had wasted a lot of money on her camera after looking at what the 7600 had produced. This camera is tough. I left it on a picnic table in the Yukon Territory one night and the camera got rained on. Certain that it was a goner I put it in a warm dry place for 3 days (just had to try to save it) and when I turned it on every feature worked perfectly. I found that alkaline batteries would run down after shooting less than 100 pictures and tried lithium batteries. I did not think that the lithiums were ever going to go dead! I did not count the number of photos taken with the lithiums but would safely say that I was getting at least 7-800 photos before having to replace the batteries. I now also have a Canon Powershot S5 IS and have found that the rechargable NiMH batteries that I use in the S5 IS last as long as the lithium batteries did in the 7600 so now I use the rechargables in both cameras. I take a lot of photos and when running out the door for a quick jaunt I always grab the Nikon 7600 instead of my much more sophisticated Canon. This camera's size and capabilities make it as desirable as my Canon. Almost five years after buying this camera I still love it and it continues to amaze me every time I use it...and it has been used a lot. For the money I can't say enough good things about this camera. GREAT CAMERA! I just love it.

Worthless Piece of garbage - crappy resale value, no more nikon point and shoots!

I bought this camera about three years ago for well around 400$ at best buy, out of the box there were dead pixles on the lcd screen and it was fuzzy, they refused to give me a new one and nikon said they had to.. they still didnt and they wanted to charge me 50$ to return it!!! so I ended up keeping it.. needless to say, this thing eats batteries faster than I eat bread... and I really like toast a lot. Ive probably bought the camera twice now with all the batteries ive used. The latest is it's beginning to have a lense error when it feels like it - it's always been in its case upon not using it, ive taken amazing care of it and its never even been dropped. I'm not happy with it, it was overpriced and I'm considering smashing it when I get my rebel xt.. because I'll only get 90$ resale for it... I have a feeling it's gonna die soon too. and I never received any customer service when I called nikon. I've gotten some really pretty pictures out of it, despite its kwirks... but overall I wouldn't say its worth the money. Nikon makes a lot of good cameras, just not point and shoots! I have a hard time finding these in stores today. So I think it speaks for itself..

Questions & Answers
Question : Will the lenses and flash bulbs of an older Nikon camera be compatable with the newer digital Nikon cameras?
A family member of mine purchased an older semi-professional Nikon camera in the early '90s, and he was wondering if his flash bulb and lenses, also bought new around the same time, would be compatible with a new digital Nikon camera.Advance thanks for any help provided : )

Answer:
I am guessing you mean speedlight or flash and not flashbulb. There are probably only a small percentage of the folks on here that have actually ever used a flash bulb. But I know where you are comming from ~lol~ It depends on the speedlight and lens but probably so . Any speelight with a low enough sync voltage like the SB-25 can be used I will link a chart so you can check the flash. If you do not know the sync voltage or if the chart says its above 12 V for Nikon ( 6 volt for Canon) get a wein hot shoe to hot shoe safe sync slave and you can use any speedliht with that between the speedlight and the cameraHere is the chart http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.htmlNow as to lenses any lens that is AI, AF, AFd, AFs or AFi can be used On some cameras pre AI lenses can also be used ( D40/D60) Others they cannot mount on unless they have been AI converted Yours are probably AF or AFd if they were made in the 90s as they started making them in 1986 and they are still made today, AI lenses will never autofocus they were manual focuse cameras. In addition only AFs and AFi lenses will autofocus on the D40/D40x or D60AI lenses will not meter on D100, D90, D80, D79, D60,D50 or D40. They will not matrix meter on the D1 though they will center weight and spot meter, they meter on all other Nikon dSLRI routinely use lenses from the 70s on my cameras ( D40 and D300) . Feel free to email me with specifics on the camera, lens and spedlight you have gotten. BTW That old film SLR still probably takes great pictures also so keep it around in case you get a yearning to shoot film oneday

Question : Will optional lenses 70-300 etc from a 35 mm nikon 4004 work if i buy a nikon digital camera body?
I have mulitiple lenses from my old 35mm nikon 4004 and I want to use them with a digital camera but I dont know if it can be done...any idea?

Answer:
All of the current Nikon DSLRs except the D40, D40x, D60 are fully compatible (meter and auto-focus) with AF, AF-D lenses from a N4004 including the AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G lens. The D40, D40x, D60 cameras meter but do not auto-focus AF and AF-D lenses.

Question : what is the best nikon digital camera?
i am looking for a new digital camera and i'm am not sure what is best for me. i shake really bad, so i need the image stabilization thing. and i am looking for a digital camera, not one of the big photography ones. something that takes sharp, good day and night pictures would be really nice. but the big thing is something that takes reaaaaaaaally sharp pictures that are not grainy. i know nikon is good, cause my mom has one of the photography cameras and it is amaaaaaaaazing. but too much and too big for me. any helppp?ps. i am looking for something new, like off their website.

Answer:
actually the "big photography" ones are not really big, Nikon has few entry level DSLRs which are really small, D40/40x, and D60, and they have VR (vibration reduction) on the lens.by the way, shake may due to how you hold your camera, keep your arms/elbow right next to your body will help.

Question : If I'm looking for a very professional Nikon digital camera, what would be a recommendation?
If I'm looking for a very professional digital camera, probably not SLR, what would be a recommendation? I need something with a very GOOD macro setting. I'm pretty sure I'll be buying a Nikon, and I'm also curious about CoolPix. This camera I plan on using for artistic photos, so I'm searching for really nice quality - not a little rectangular box used to take pictures of the family BBQ, you know? hahaha. thanks for taking the time to read this.

I would recommend Nikon Coolpix P90- 12.1-megapixel resolution for photo-quality prints up to 16 x 20 inches- 24x optical wide-angle (35mm equivalent focal length: 26-624mm) Zoom-Nikkor ED glass lens- 3.0-inch Vari-Angle LCD and Electronic Viewfinder- Nikon's Smart Portrait System; Red-eye Fix, Face Priority AE and morehttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PKEJZQ?ie=UTF8&tag=bestdeals-y-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&cr eative=390957&creativeASIN=B001PKEJZQEven you can consider this one Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 - 12.1-megapixel resolution- 27mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens; 18x optical zoom with POWER O.I.S.- HD movies with 1280 x 720-pixel resolution; AVCHD Lite format- 2.7-inch TFT LCD screenhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002IKLJU0?ie=UTF8&tag=bestdeals-y-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789& creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002IKLJU0

Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are:Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-NikkorNikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models? Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT?Thanks.

Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused.Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker.http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htmhttp://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibili ty-lens.htmJust a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm.As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT. Hope this helps.

Question : Will the lens of an old nikon camera work on one of the new digital cameras?
I have a nikon 8008s camera with three lens for it. If I buy a new nikon digital camera will these lens work on the new camera?

Answer:
Lenses for an F801/8008 would all be Ai or AF/AF-D. They would almost certainly NOT be AF-I/AF-S (the F801/8008 can't operate the autofocus motor in AF-I/AF-S lenses). They would mount on any Nikon digital body. The two gotchas would be:1. Ai lenses (except for the fairly uncommon Ai-P lenses which are actually AF-D lenses without autofocus) would get no metering on anything except the D1/2/3 or D200/300/700.2. AF/AF-D lenses would not autofocus on a D40/D40x/D60Another important thing to note: Except on a D3/D700 all your film lenses will behave like longer lenses on digital bodies, due to the 1.5x crop factor of the smaller sensor.

Question : Looking fo a good lens for good price for my Nikon digital camera?
this is my camera i needa better lens that zooms in ad out more than the 18-55 lens!!Megapixels: 6.1 Megapixels Optical Zoom: 3 X Lens System Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm lens LCD Screen Size: 2.5 in Recording Method SDHC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital (SD) Card Camera Type Digital camera - SLR

Answer:
I suggest you stick with Nikon lenses. The original manufacturers lenses are almost always better. A very popular choice right now is the Nikkor 18-200mm zoom. I provided a link below. It is not the cheapest lens out there but it has a great zoom range. For most people this is the only lens they will ever need.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/408518-USA/Nikon_2159_18_200mm_f_3_5_5_6G_ED_IF_AF_S.html

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!

Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's.Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLRThere are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR
