All I expected.

The Nikon S4000 has been a pleasure to use. Because it's so small, I have it with me much more - just drop it in my pocket when I walk out the door. I have not yet had to recharge the battery although I've used it a few weeks now. That was one of my concerns. The screen cleans easily with a microfiber cloth. The picture quality is very good for my use in taking casual photos. I recommend it.

Instructions

Complete instructions for this camera are included on a CD. This is great BUT it's kinda hard to remember everything and without a computer you can't carry the instructions with you (unless you want to print everything and carry around big pages) so it would be better to include a printed instruction booklet as part of the package.

Also, the flash recovery time is sooooo slow even with a full battery charge.

I was hesitant to buy a nikon digital camera because i just loved my canon but when i received my nikon digital camera i loved how it's very easy to use, loved the itouch screen and the video are great as well, the only thing that bother's me is when i take pictures at night the flash is too bright and so my kids doesn't like it when i take their pictures at night, other than that i just loved them. i did my research and amazon has the cheapest price and they shipped pretty fast.

Great Camera

Had a chance to test it at home, and to take the camera on vacation. Easy to use and the 10x optical zoom is amazing. Great photos. Very happy with the purchase.

Exactly what I wanted...

This camera starts up fast, has minimal shutter lag, and I can take one picture right after another! It's almost like using an 35mm camera with the benefits of digital.

Fantastic Camera!

Haven't taken a whole lot of pictures with this camera, but the ones I have are GREAT! It is quick. The photos are great - nice color and contrast, and GREAT resolution! The 10X zoom is a wonderful capability. The LCD viewer if marvelous. You can use if to do some enlarging and cropping before the pics even leave the camera! Of course, it DOESN'T do well in bright sunlight - true for all LCD displays. The only solution is a viewfinder, which is very rare in these small cameras - and even the one I have in my Canon EOS 10D doesn't do all that well in bright sunlight. Have taken one little video with it, and it's pretty impressive - got in close to some bubbles in a champagne glass, and they show up just fine. It does capture audio, though not smashingly, as one would expect from a small unit with a pinhole for a microphone. This will become pretty much my primary camera, until I can afford a Canon EOS 5D MkII.

Best Pocket Camera Yet

This is the best value in a combo hi rez pocket camera with HD video capability. Just too heavy for me and the 14 megapixel still images not much different than my 10 meg Nikon that weighs half as much. If the HD Vid is an important feature I highly recommend it.

Gotta Get One!

This is a great little camera to have when you want good, quality pictures but don't want to carry around a heavy, clunky higher quality camera. The pictures come out great considering the small size that it is. I take it with me everywhere as it is so small and I can depend on it to take nice pictures to send to friends. However, if I am going on a day trip or if I am taking pictures of nature and know that is how I am spending my day, I will take the larger, better quality camera with me instead. For the size of this little guy, it is hard to imagine that it can hold such punch! I recommend that you "get to know it" before depending on it for quick pictures as there are so many options to get to know, though it is easy to operate once you know how to access everything. I highly recommend this camera and am so glad that I got it!

No regrets - Great Camera! Which SD Card to Get?

I bought the S8000 having had Olympus Stylus 740 and C50 Zoom camera's. The Nikon LCD view finder is BY FAR BETTER to see in bright light conditions than the 740 and C50. Yeah, it could be better, but it's night and day compared to Olympus.

Nikon recommends a Class 6 or higher SD card for the S8000 for faster data writing (within the camera). I bit the bullet with a Class 10 8GB SDHC by Sandisk ($50). To torment myself, I compared my classless regular 2GB SD card to see how much slower the data writing process was. With the camera at the highest setting (14M* 4320x3240) and outdoors, it took 1 picture every 3 seconds with either card. (For comparison, my 740 set at SHQ 3072x2304 took 1 picture every 11 seconds). Then I tried recording in HD. I'm not sure I can really see a difference using the fast and slow card! Maybe I'm not under the right conditions to see a difference, but now I question biting a $50 bullet. The 2GB card was a freebie from my local MicroCenter store.....would have been $6 purchased outright. I discovered 1 minute of HD video = 62MB for a quicktime movie. In my situation (basically shooting pictures), a slow card (less than Class 6) probably would have been fine. Live and learn.

Bought the "ZipKit" ($25 with shipping) to accessorize the camera....what a great deal! The kit comes with a USB2.0 SD Card Reader that boosts transfer time. 100MB of pictures took 16 seconds with the USB on the camera, but using the USB Card reader it dropped to 7 seconds with a Class 10 SDHC card, and 8 seconds for a classless SD card. The reader is the way to go. Obviously Nikon's recommendation for a Class 6+ SD card has nothing to do with getting pitures off of the camera.

CASES: the Olympus 202066 Neoprene Case fits this camera better than the 740 it was designed for! It's not tight and there's room for a couple extra batteries. I read concerns for the Nikon hard shell case and held off. Glad I did because I would get another 202066 if I ever wear out the Velcro.

Overall I'm happy so far. I'm wondering about battery life. With my 740, battery life was the weakest link. I was lucky if I got 3 hours (250 pics) per OEM battery (far less with non-OEM batteries). For the S8000, I'll know in August...

S8000 No Nikon NO

Owning several Nikons in the past and using them with great success, I felt resonably sure that the S8000 would solve or exceed my current picture needs. Well it might if I was happy with the camera. Remember, I am aiming at the camera itself not the pictures. I'll get to the pictures later.

First of all, I went through two S8000 before the third one came from Amazon and charged the battery. When the thrid camera came, I call Nikon, directly. I had them walk me through the process of everything from opening the box to plugging in the charger. I found that I had completed the task correctly, as the instruction book stated, twice before. When the third camera came and the battery was charging, I realized I didn't do enough homework. You charge the battery in the camera unless you purchcase an additional external battery charger. Realize that if you don't have an external battery charger for an additional battery you can't use the camera.

I like to be able to hold the camera with one hand. The S8000 is too thin, at least for me, to hold comfortably. There is a small thumb pad in the upper right corner of the body for your thumb and your right index finger holds the camera in front. My right hand shape was not what Nikon used as a guide when making the plans for the S8000. It felt very uncomfortable holding it with just the right hand. Most of the time I used my left hand as well. I guess most of us put our left thumb under the camera and the left index finger on top. Not a good idea!! The flash is can't pop up if your finger is holding it down. Keep in mind that normally you would be holding the camera with the left hand while adjusting settings with the right hand as the camera is designed to do. Without thinking I would just frame and push the shutter release whereby loosing the picture as the flash couldn't open.

Lastly, how much more could it cost to have two connectors for a neck strape instead of one for a wrist strape? I like having the camera hanging down from my neck so I grab it quickly and have my hands free when not holding the camera. Think about walking around all day on vacation not being able to use two hands as one hand has to hold the camera unless you put it away.

I will say this, "it takes great pictures." The zoom is excellent. The 3 inch screen is great. Ok, so you can't zoom the lens in the video mode. It has more setting and adjustments than I would ever need to use but after all, it is a Nikon !

Can't use zoom while recording movies

I have been shopping around for MONTHS for a mega zoom camera. I had settled on the Panasonic Lumix ZS7, when my son, the Photography major, suggested that I buy a Nikon brand camera. So, I switched at the last minute. I should have gone with my research. If I had, I would have ended up with a camera that won't zoom while recording movies. Can you believe that??

Also, upon further examination, you'll see that there is NO selector dial on the camera. This is because all the selections are done via the menu screen. Way too complicated for a point and shoot photographer like me.

I ordered the Lumix and it's on its way. For about the same price, I get the zoom feature, GPS tagging, 12x zoom instead of 10x, a 25mm wide angle lens instead of a 30mm, and I will be able to take movie clips longer than 29 minutes. The Lumix ZS7 IS a little thicker, but not so much as to be a deal breaker.

Nice Zoom

The 10X zoom is the big selling point for me. The camera takes great pictures but there is one design flaw. Where you would naturally hold the camera in your hand, your left finger will always block the pop up flash. When the flash is needed you will need to hold the camera in an unusual way. The 720p video mode sounds nice but make no mistake, this is not a substitute for a real dedicated video camera. The zoom is very restricted in video mode and there is much shake. Video images are fair but not great unless it is just holding still on one subject. Other than that it is a nice digital.

Good quality pictures from a basic camera

I needed a replacement camera, but didn't have a lot to spend, so this Nikon was my choice. I have had it for a month, and I have been very happy with the image quality, from inside to outdoors, and especially close-ups. The camera does not have a lot of complicated features, but the settings work well. I don't use the easy auto setting very much, because it doesn't usually pick the appropriate setting. But I have had good results with the automatic setting, and choosing my own scene mode like macro or sports. I often turn off the flash for better results, and the pictures do not get blurry like on my old camera. The zoom works very well, even after you go past the optical zoom and into digital. The only slight issue I have found is that it is sometimes slow to take the shot and save it so that you can take the next one. This seems to be a Coolpix thing, because my last one did it too. However, my final comment would be on how great the video quality is. I was impressed with both the sound and image quality of the few I've taken so far. If you are looking for an affordable basic digital camera, then I highly suggest the Coolpix L22.

Terrific camera, great features, amazing photos!

This is a great camera for everyday use, vacation shots, sports photos, and more. We take low-light, no flash photos with this on the "sports" setting for dance recitals and plays. The photos turn out terrific, and people always ask what camera we use because they are so impressed with the clarity of the shots.

This camera has numerous features and settings. The navigation between settings is pretty intuitive, and the instruction manual has lots more ideas too. It has good video capability for capturing something in a video file when you don't have a camcorder handy. You don't need special software to upload photos from this camera - I have a card reader in my computer to do all that.

The camera does a good job conserving battery life. We use rechargeable AA batteries without any problems for hundreds of photos per charge. It's compact and fairly lightweight, and it fits into a shirt pocket with ease.

The large screen makes reviewing photos easy, and deleting ones from the camera is simple with just a touch of a button plus an "are you sure?" question to keep you from potentially erasing something in error.

The 3.6x optical zoom is an improvement over the previous Nikon Coolpix we had, so this is now the favorite camera in my home! If you've had a Coolpix in the past and are thinking about getting a newer version, definitely do it! You'll find the operations and menu choices very similar to what you're used to, but with added improvements that you'll appreciate.

We've not had any problems with the battery cover on this camera or the previous Coolpix cameras we still own. If you break the battery cover, it's time for a new camera, unfortunately. But it's very sturdy and reliable, so we've never worried about it much.

Depends on what you want

First off I am a big fan of Nikon. I own three Nikon DSLR's and really like them all.

As of a few months ago I owned one Nikon L3 point and shoot camera and one Canon A720 IS P&S camera. The Canon seemed to be much better and I had a little cash to spare so I bought the newer version of each, a Nikon L22 and a Canon A1100 IS. For what I want, the Canon is much better.

The Nikon isn't a bad camera, but it isn't what I want in a camera. There are not enough manual controls. You can see from a picture of the camera that it does not have the big button function selector on top. You are a slave to the Nikon menu's and they don't have nearly the number of choices that I want. There is no Program shooting mode, just Auto. Therefore it will not allow me to choose the ISO setting, which is improtant to me. Like most P&S cameras it does not have a viewfinder so you are left to hold the camera out one or two feet away from you to shoot the picture. I want a viewfinder to look through so that my head helps hold the camera steady, which is VERY improtant in taking a picture with any kind of camera. Some, but not all, of the Canon P&S cameras do have a viewfinder.

If you can get past the limitations of auto selected ISO settings and can hold the camera steady, there is no problem with picture quality. My guess is that a lot of people who don't know as much as I do about digital cameras would love the simplicity of the L22, and the L22 is 40-50 bucks cheaper than most Canon P&S cameras so it just depends on what you want in a camera.

Nikon L22

Love this camera!

It was difficult making a decision regarding cameras in this price range; Canon, Olympus, Fuji, Samsung, Nikon, Kodak, Polariod, etc., etc., etc.

All had 5 star ratings, and all had 1 star ratings.

I based my decision on having had a old Nikon F1, and how much I enjoyed using it.

So, I chose the Nikon, and I am glad that I did!

I find this camera easy to use, and it takes excellent pictures.

Keep in mind that I am a casual photographer, and that the pictures I am taking are for person use, as well as ebay/craigslist.

The camera interfaces easily with my XP Pro desktop, and uploading is a breeze.

I recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive, easy to use, quality digital camera.

I am very disappointed with Nikon. I bought this camera on April, 21 and I used it for about one month and suddenly it has broken. It didn't turn on and off. I used it for just three times and nothing happened, for example the camera dind't fall or something else like that!! I sent it to be repaired in authorized assintance in Brazil and they told me that the camera principal circuit was broken and it will cost more than the camera price (2 times more expensive). I live in Brazil and a friend of mine brought it to me from USA. The camera will be sent to USA as soon as possible to be repaired, but I will never buy a Nikon again. It was not a good experience and it has been a big trouble and wasted time and money. And I think that it is a big problem to a new camera that was used for just few times.

    not up to expectations

I purchased this camera primarily for the Continuous Sport mode, since my son is an avid skateboarder. The first set of photos I took came out fairly clear, but with an odd 'outline' around him (outdoors, dusk ~ 6pm). I adjusted a few settings, and the next set came out well (outdoors, ~ 4pm, slightly cloudy). At this point, I was pretty happy with the camera - I thought the number of images per second was very impressive, and I was pleased with the amount of shots that were taken.

Unfortunately, things went downhill from there... Indoor birthday party photos (set to indoor mode, with and without flash) came out with an orange tone. The next 2 sets of Sports Mode images were taken at indoor skateparks, and all of the images came out streaky. After reviewing the manual, I realized I would only be able to use this mode in very limited situations. Nikon recommends NOT using sports mode in basically any environment where you would watch or play sports -- bright sunlight, under bright indoor lights, under fluorescent lights, etc. I suppose you need to be outdoors between 2-4pm, with the sun behind you, and with slight cloud cover to avoid any sort of glare. And forget about taking photos after the sun goes down - those were grainy and blurry.

I'm extremely disappointed that this didn't work out. I loved the size of it, and the shiny red body really made it stand out. I was hoping this would be a good transition camera before entering the world of SLRs, but, unfortunately it didn't meet my needs. I'm sending it back tomorrow morning.

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?

Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's.Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLRThere are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : Does anyone own a Nikon digital camera that they love or hate?
If you own a Nikon digital camera I would really like to know your thoughts on it. Just be sure to tell me what kind it is and what you like and don't like about it. I'm looking to buy a Nikon digital camera soon and I wanted some outside views on which ones are the best. Price isn't that important to me as long as the quality is worth it. I don't want to pay $700+ only to find out that I might as well have gotten a disposable camera from walmart.Thank You!

Answer:
I own a Nikon D50,and am happy with it. The only frustrating thing is that I don't yet have the skills to fully utilize its capabilities. HOWEVER-there is more variation in pix quality due to the skill of the user than in the cameras. Sort of like making love.

Question : Will the lens of an old nikon camera work on one of the new digital cameras?
I have a nikon 8008s camera with three lens for it. If I buy a new nikon digital camera will these lens work on the new camera?

Answer:
Lenses for an F801/8008 would all be Ai or AF/AF-D. They would almost certainly NOT be AF-I/AF-S (the F801/8008 can't operate the autofocus motor in AF-I/AF-S lenses). They would mount on any Nikon digital body. The two gotchas would be:1. Ai lenses (except for the fairly uncommon Ai-P lenses which are actually AF-D lenses without autofocus) would get no metering on anything except the D1/2/3 or D200/300/700.2. AF/AF-D lenses would not autofocus on a D40/D40x/D60Another important thing to note: Except on a D3/D700 all your film lenses will behave like longer lenses on digital bodies, due to the 1.5x crop factor of the smaller sensor.

Question : Can I use a Nikon 35mm camera lens with any Nikon Digital Camera?
I've got a lot of great Nikon lenses but want to up grade to a digital camera. Can I get any Nikon Digital Camera to use with these lenses? My understanding is that most F-mount lenses are compatible with newer models.

Answer:
yes and no99% of all nikon 35mm lenses will fit all the current Nikon DSLRs... HOWEVER, certain things may not work on the camera when you use an older lenses metering is sometimes lost on the DSLR if you don't use a Nikon lens that has the electronics in the lens... or if you buy a D40, D40x, D60 you would not be able to use an older Nikon auto focus lens and have the auto focus work unless it was one of the AF lenses with the built in motor. The oldest AF lenses required a motor drive in the camera body to focus the lens, Nikon left that motor out of the low end cheaper DSLRs.

Question : Can you use Nikon lenses for film cameras on your digital camera?
I was told that Nikon digital camera lenses are interchangeable with Nikon film camera lenses...the difference being that lenses made for the film cameras cost significantly less than those made for the digital cameras. Does anyone know if you this is true?
