CAMERA, COOLPIX S4000, RED, 12MP
Customer Review :
Stylish, easy to use and great quality pictures
Summary: A great everyday camera. Very good quality pictures, simple to use and very stylish. Small enough that can easily fit in a shirt or pant pocket. Gives you more options in terms of color and exposure manipulations than similarly priced cameras. You can even do basic photo editing using the included stylus. It also has the cool factor of having a touch screen for all controls.
Positives: Compact, easy to use, great picture quality, hi-def video capture.
Negatives: No HDMI port.
Details: Hi-def video: 720p, 24 frames per second. Does not include an HDMI port, so movies have to be downloaded into a computer to be seen.
Picture sharing: You get 2GB free online storage to share pictures on the web.
Hardware: Touch screen: this is the camera's main control mechanism, and it delivers. Bright screen that can easily be seen in bright light. Large virtual buttons that make navigating the options quite easy. Ok responsiveness, not the fastest, but certainly adequate.
Flash: It is tiny. Adequate only for filling in shadows, but in a dimly lit, indoor setting you get some noise on the pictures (as the camera automatically adjusts the ISO). Indoor images tended to be well focused despite the small flash.
Battery: I took 425 pictures (no flash) without needing to recharge.
Ease of use: Once you get used to the idea that there are no buttons readily available (all buttons and commands go through the touch screen on the back) it is quite easy to use. There are some settings (such as BBS) which require a quick review of the manual to know what they are for.
Burst mode: Contrary to other cameras in this group (i.e. Canon A3100) this one includes a burst mode which allows to take up to 16 images in rapid succession.
Pre-set scene mode: Gives you the common ones (portrait, landscape, children running, etc.) and some new ones, such as fireworks and dawn. There are 16 different scenes to choose from there are as many options as higher end models.

Nice little camera!
It's interesting how Amazon has divided up the reviews for the Coolpix S4000 based on the color of the camera (at least as of this writing). Moving on: This is a nice little camera, it's the third in my collection of compacts, the only one with a touch screen. I have posted photos taken with it, both post-processed and straight out of the camera. My notes:
There is an issue with charging the battery. This has been mentioned in at least one other review, don't remember the color of that camera (doesn't matter). Recharging is not done as described in the quick start guide. Put the USB connector in the wall plug-in part, and plug it into your outlet, THEN attach the other end to the camera. This is the only way that the camera will be triggered to turn on and recharge. Wall first, camera second.
The guide says charging a fully discharged battery can take up to two hours and 10 minutes, or thereabouts. After three and a half hours, though the light was still blinking, I unplugged mine during its first charge. The battery icon did not show up in the display, meaning it was charged.
The default should not be for digital zoom to be turned on. Make your first menu adjustment turning that off!
Another reviewer got the best results with a setting of 3m for the images. I set mine at 8 and they seem fine; unless you are going to print very large posters, you also may want to cut back from the 12m.
Flash settings aren't sticky, so if you turned it off and then turned the camera off, the flash will be back on auto when you turn it back on.
I found the color to be good, white balance to be fairly accurate, exposure to be so-so, all in auto scene mode. The touch screen works well but it does pick up fingerprints--scrolling and selecting worked better for me using my fingernail; they provide a stylus that can be attached to the strap and would also help reduce greasiness on the screen.
The red version looks just plain cool. It's very small, even for a compact, and very lightweight. It's a camera for snapshots, and with that limitation in mind, I think it does very well. (Don't over-expect.) I noticed that it sometimes found more than one focus spot in a scene, and that worked well. Mine came with a carrying case included in the box. It comes with the full manual on a CD. The card readers built into both my laptop and desktop computers (both Windows 7, a Dell and an HP) were able to read the card with no problem, so I did not install any of the software that came with it.

Got plum not red camera
Ordered red. Came in box marked red. This camera is plum which is the only color i was sure I did NOT want. Had to go ahead and use it due to family get-together. Not happy.

Disappointing time until next picture
I like everything about this camera except the Image Review time setting. The only option for Image Review is On or Off. I primarily take pictures of my young children, so I need the instant image review after taking a picture so that I can make sure I got the shot. However the image review time is between 5-7 seconds and there's no option to reduce that time. My previous Kodak would clear the image review when I pressed the shutter button, but this one doesn't have that feature or any other way to clear the image review early. Turning off the image review just doesn't work for me since I then would have to hope I got the picture or go into the image review and check the shot. It's also possible that it just takes too long to store the image, though this doesn't seem to be the case when I turn off image review. Nikon tech support wasn't very helpful. They said that maybe a faster data card would help (I have a class 2 I believe though they weren't even able to help me confirm the class.)
The size of the camera is great and picture quality seems good and the price is good. The touch screen is also great and it's easy to use.
Unfortunately the image review issue is a deal breaker so I'm looking into a Canon.

Average Quality Photos
This is a decent camera for the average user but it doesn't perform nearly as well as my old Canon SD750 or my Canon SD880.
I was expecting an upgrade but instead I got a major downgrade in quality and features.
This camera only has two timer modes Single shot 10s and single shot 2s where my Canon cameras have 4 including custom preset timers with Multiple shots in one setting.
Macro mode is more than useless and doesn't perform well at all.
Video on this camera is really nice but that's about the only positive thing I can say about the quality of what it produces.
The images taken with this camera are not very clear and are very grainy at best. I only see this camera useful if you want to spend hours with photoshop to touch up each photo before you can even share it with your friends and family.
I'm debating on returning this camera and saving up my money to buy a Canon DSLR (probably a 50D) since Nikon hasn't given me a very good first impression.

Not crazy about this camera yet.
It's slow! Maybe I'm missing something, but it takes forever from the time I press the button till it actually takes the picture. When you're photographing a 9-month old, that just doesn't work out! I'm going to give it another week or 2, then I'm going to see if it can be returned, even though I no longer have the packaging.

Got a lot for the price
This was for my wife. She just needs a point and shoot for her vacation in Europe, family gatherings etc. and this fits the bill.
This camera packs a lot of features and I am very surprised how robust the features are. This will even take videos!
Do make sure you you get the best SD card you can. I got SanDisk SDHC Class 10 High Performance memory card. You need to get Class 6 or higher if you want to use Video Mode.
I got the little case to hold the camera in her bag safely. I also got an extra battery for this the Nikon EN-EL10 Rechargeable Battery.
You need to hold the camera while the picture is written to the card to avoid blur. I hope a higher end SD card will write a little faster. If you shoot and hold you won't have any issues.
All in all it takes great pictures, easy to operate, more features than I expected and an easy interface to figure it all out. This is a nice camera to have conveniently packed in a pocket or purse for those times you are not carrying around your DSLR or Video camera. All at a competitive price.

Poor Design makes camara almost useless
The camera itself takes a nice photo.
However the mini-usb port and cables are poorly designed. There is no clear indication which way to insert the cable into the camera, and the instruction manual is equally obtuse in showing you. Unfortunately it doesn't take much force to damage the av input. The camera is only 2 months old, and this is only the 3rd time to charge the battery.
To resolve the broken av input, I had to order a separate Nikon battery charger, to re-charge the battery. To move photos to my computer, I have to remove the SD card from the camera, and use a card reader. These extra steps are the reason for this poor review. A good design would have clearly shown how to plug in the cables, a better design would have used a more robust input jack. If you buy this camera, be very careful when plugging into the av input jack.

12 MP Coolpix S70 red
Customer Review :
Like turned to love!
I will admit, I purchased this camera just becuase of the commercial (and I love Nikon's!) and the picture quality is AMAZING! I had a bit of trouble at first getting all the settings right, but once I learned how the camera behaved, I have been happy ever since! Many of the negative reviews are because of picture quality and I can't say how strongly I disagree with that. The 12.1 plus the features of the Nikon make for a superb picture! The one downfall that I can't get over, but is easy to accommodate is that I cannot turn the camera around and take a picture of my husband and I without hitting a setting on the screen. It isn't comfortable to work this way, but that isn't what it was made for!

horrible pictures
I had a Sony Cybershot that got dropped and unfortunately needed replaced. I wanted a touch screen and after reading reviews went with this camera. I have had it several months and am horribly disappointed. I just returned from vacation and the pictures are just all horrible. After comparing them with last years pictures and am contacting Nikon because it is just sad how all my pictures look.

We bought this camera for it's features and looks. Had to return it -- wouldn't take a charge. The next one -- same problem ! TWICE BURNT Having paid $230.+, we ONLY got $179.99 credited back to us -- 80%!!! I've done a lot of shopping at ' Amazon'in the past. This is how we got rewarded for THEM sending us faulty merchandise. THANK YOU, AMAZON.COM, we're shopping elsewhere from now-on !!!

I wanted to like this, but it's so flawed
When I saw the camera in action, I really wanted to like it. I liked all the features it had to offer, but every feature did not work properly. This camera is inherently flawed. For every pro there is a con. I did not want to believe the negative reviews on amazon, but I wish I had. I ultimately had to return it because it just simply does not work as advertised.
Pro (with it's con) - big OLED touchscreen. ( that's awesome, but the resolution is so poor, it really is an eyesore to look at. Colors look nice, but they do not truly represent the photo when transferred to a computer)
- touch controls, virtually no buttons except the shutter. Controls include iPhone like pinch to zoom and swiping through picture functionality. (this feature would be nice had they either put better hardware in the camera or made the firmware more efficient. The controls are so slow and unresponsive, it will make you downright mad. Touch focus is horrific and never works as it is supposed to. Also, no dedicated power button means you must open the lens up to turn it on, even to review pictures. Come on, that's ridiculous.)
-high resolution sensor capable of taking HD 720p video. (I should live with the afformemtioned flaws above, but it must do it's primary function well, taking a nice clear picture. This camera does not. The pictures look simply bad. My 5 year old Sanyo Xacti digicam takes superior pictures to this camera. This is not an exaggeration. Pictures are not properly set up by the camera, and are often taken incorrectly. Previewing the pictures on the camera show rich vibrant color, but transferring them to a computer show them to be dull, with improper color representation. Video is no better. It looks to be captured via motion jpeg format. Framerates are bad, colors look as dull and misrepresented as in stills. Also, no optical zoom while shooting video. Just everything wrong going on here.)
A few nice things that I really can't complain about is the build quality is superb. Also, the all interenal optics is great so if you are storing it in a purse or pocket, the lens will not protrude accidentally causing harm to the camera. This cannot make up for the fact that a) it's primary function, taking pictures is severly flawed, and b) Its main selling point, the huge multitouch OLED display looks horrific and does not Function properly.
I honestly cannot recommend this item, and would recommend a comparable camera from another manufacturer.

Questions & Answers
Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are:Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-NikkorNikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models? Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT?Thanks.
Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused.Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker.http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htmhttp://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibili ty-lens.htmJust a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm.As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT. Hope this helps.

Question : Can I use a Nikon 35mm camera lens with any Nikon Digital Camera?
I've got a lot of great Nikon lenses but want to up grade to a digital camera. Can I get any Nikon Digital Camera to use with these lenses? My understanding is that most F-mount lenses are compatible with newer models.
Answer:
yes and no99% of all nikon 35mm lenses will fit all the current Nikon DSLRs... HOWEVER, certain things may not work on the camera when you use an older lenses metering is sometimes lost on the DSLR if you don't use a Nikon lens that has the electronics in the lens... or if you buy a D40, D40x, D60 you would not be able to use an older Nikon auto focus lens and have the auto focus work unless it was one of the AF lenses with the built in motor. The oldest AF lenses required a motor drive in the camera body to focus the lens, Nikon left that motor out of the low end cheaper DSLRs.

Question : Does anyone own a Nikon digital camera that they love or hate?
If you own a Nikon digital camera I would really like to know your thoughts on it. Just be sure to tell me what kind it is and what you like and don't like about it. I'm looking to buy a Nikon digital camera soon and I wanted some outside views on which ones are the best. Price isn't that important to me as long as the quality is worth it. I don't want to pay $700+ only to find out that I might as well have gotten a disposable camera from walmart.Thank You!
Answer:
I own a Nikon D50,and am happy with it. The only frustrating thing is that I don't yet have the skills to fully utilize its capabilities. HOWEVER-there is more variation in pix quality due to the skill of the user than in the cameras. Sort of like making love.

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?
Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

Question : If i buy the SB-800 for my Nikon digital camera do i need an umbrella or softbox also?
To take professional pictures with good lighting. Also, which Nikon model digital camera would you recommend?? For portraits/indoor outdoor photography
Answer:
I picked up a LightSphere from Gary Fong for my SB-600, it gives a nice diffused light source. I shoot a fair amount of portraits and like my D90 for that. Good image quality that won't break the bank. For even better the D300s is a higher build quality.

Question : Is there a certain printer for the nikon digital camera?
i just bought a nikon s70 touch screen digital camera and i want to buy a printer for it, is there a specific printer i need for it and if so whats it called?
Answer:
No there is not, but I think if you want a printer, that you should check out the Epson printers. They have a selection of printers and are very well respected for quality. Also, you may want to investigate photo lab options. Below are 2 links to help you research, one is to Epson's website and the other to Mpix an online lab that offers some possibilities.Hope this helps.Mark

All of the current Nikon DSLRs except the D40, D40x, D60 are fully compatible (meter and auto-focus) with AF, AF-D lenses from a N4004 including the AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G lens. The D40, D40x, D60 cameras meter but do not auto-focus AF and AF-D lenses.

Question : what is the best nikon digital camera?
i am looking for a new digital camera and i'm am not sure what is best for me. i shake really bad, so i need the image stabilization thing. and i am looking for a digital camera, not one of the big photography ones. something that takes sharp, good day and night pictures would be really nice. but the big thing is something that takes reaaaaaaaally sharp pictures that are not grainy. i know nikon is good, cause my mom has one of the photography cameras and it is amaaaaaaaazing. but too much and too big for me. any helppp?ps. i am looking for something new, like off their website.
Answer:
actually the "big photography" ones are not really big, Nikon has few entry level DSLRs which are really small, D40/40x, and D60, and they have VR (vibration reduction) on the lens.by the way, shake may due to how you hold your camera, keep your arms/elbow right next to your body will help.
