Good camera for a novice.
I got this camera several years ago, when it first came out. I also paid over twice what it is going for now. I tried it a few times and thought that it was too difficult to print my own photos (I take lots!) I put it away, and went back to my Olympus film camera. A few weeks ago, 20 minutes into my niece's wedding shower, my 35mm camera stopped working! No time to run around hoping the nearest store had a battery. Panic set in. Then I remembered my digital. I called someone to bring it to the party. I barely remembered how to use it . . but the pictures turned out very well. I've managed to lose the manual, so some things are a mystery to me - I'll just have to practice with it. But I am pleased with the picture quality. So pleased, in fact, that I just ordered the Olympus C5500. The 460-d will be my "back-up". Now that you can go and print pictures for pennies, I'm going to give digital photography another try. I think that this would be a good camera for young adults and for the infrequent photographer. Those who are the "family photographer" at parties, or who take pictures of their small children, or enjoy outdoor sceneic photography are better off spending $75 more for a more advanced camera. As for Olympus quality . . .I have always gone back to them when purchasing my cameras. I upgrade every 2 1/2 - 3 years. Olympus ought to be sending me commissions . . . I've recommended them to everyone who has asked, "What kind of camera do you use?" I know that at least 25 people have purchased Olympus cameras because I have recommended them. My only complaint: NO NECK STRAP! They only use wrist straps. Any parent who is trying to wrangle a toddler, a bored 10 year old and a puppy for a portrait knows that a wrist strap is not practical. Most events where you take pictures are hectic: fairs, parties, sporting events. You are more likely to put down your camera if there is only a wrist strap . . .you need your hands for other things, like holding onto your 5 year old niece, paying for your beer or clutching onto your ticket. I recommend getting a small, practical camera bag that you can attach to a belt loop or has a neckstrap -something that you can access easily.

Still love it after many years!
I've had this camera for many years now- I'd guess close to ten. It has held up beautifully despite my lack of carrying case and my tendency to just throw it in the car, in a backpack, etc. The exterior is scratched due to my carelessness, but the camera still takes terrific quality photos. I have had momentary pangs of jealousy when I see the sleek, pretty little cameras that are on the market now, but I have no reason to replace my Olympus, as it works so well. It's like the watch in those old commercials- it takes a lickin, but keeps on tickin! FABULOUS value and you won't be disappointed if you buy this model.
Update: January 2010. Local retailers have replaced photo printing machines and the new ones do not have slots for this camera's smart card. DH has pointed out that we can transfer photos onto a usb stick and bring that to the store, but this involves an extra step that I really don't need. Maybe it is time to invest in a newer model.

great optics, durable machine
After four years, I can attest that the D-460Z is a great camera. My 35mm SLR (Minolta SRT201)skills transfer well to this digital for takeoff photos of aircraft. Ignore the "digital zoom" rating for all cameras, as the quality comes with the optical qualities. A couple of professional photographers in 1978 rated Minolta optics a close second to Nikon's first for SLRs, and I would place Olympus third. In coastal Alaska, durability is the thing, as humidity rarely drops below 75%. My D-460Z resides in a LowePro case with enough room for a spare set of NiMH AAs and SmartMedia cards. At the time, Olympus had a special deal for a free Zio USB card reader with purchase, and I have since upgraded to an HP printer with integral card reader. CAUTION: Do not delete photos from the card unless the card is in the camera as other card readers may corrupt the format, rendering the card worthless, until you locate the program (try google search) to reformat the card.

Good Starter Camera!
This is the first digital camera I have really gotten to use. I think its great! It may be a bit heavier than other digital cameras, but it takes a good amount of pictures, and a good quality. I reccomend this camera.

Low price, high quality, but is it today's technology?
I bought this camera in 2000 and is it still kicking today. It's extremely durable. I've dropped it at least a dozen times, and while there are plenty of scuff marks on the exterior case, I've never had any damage to the functionality of the camera.
Back in 2000, this was state of the art. Decent quality, decent zoom, at a good value. Today, I'd recommend spending the extra bucks to get something with a better optical zoom (you can't rely on the digital zoom for quality) and higher megapixels. But as far as delivering what this camera advertises, it is right on.
Based on my experience, I plan to buy another model from Olympus when I upgrade. The durability factor alone makes them worth it.
The Olympus cammedia software that comes for downloading your pictures does leave something to be desired. It's a very slow interface. For transferring pics off your memory card, I recommend investing in a stand-alone memory card reader. It's worth it for the saved time, and you won't be draining your batteries every time you transfer pictures from your camera.

Far and wide, the world's most powerful ultra zoom. Capture the moment, and capture the action, with the world's most powerful ultra zoom - the 7.1 megapixel SP-550 UZ. Its new 18x wide-angle super-telephoto zoom lens gets you closer to your subject than any other compact digital camera on the market. Dual Image Stabilization eliminates blur. And with high-speed sequential shooting and new Pre-Capture technology, you'll capture anything that moves. Even shoot in low light without a flash, thanks to Bright Capture Technology, and it's easy to preview, shoot and share with the large 2.5" high-resolution LCD.

I LOVE this camera!!
After much research I bought this camera over a year ago. It is just what I wanted. It is light-weight even considering the features it has. My favorite thing about it is the 18 power zoom lens. I often use it to photograph wildlife that won't let me get very close. I use a 1gb XD picture card in it and even after all this time I still have room for 108 more pictures on it. This camera will do anything I ask of it and due to the SCN and GUIDE menus it is very easy to choose what setting to use. I would recommend this camera (or perhaps a newer version) to anyone with a bit of photography experience.

Over 16,000 Shots So Far
I've had this camera two and a half years now and have taken over 16,000 photos with it. All cameras have their shortcomings even those that cost thousands of dollars. This camera is a great overall camera. It is light weight and easy to take out hiking. I take mostly nature photos and at times the focus is slow and it can be hard to catch wildlife on the move. There are some things that only a true dslr can do, but I can't imagine being without this camera even if I could afford a high cost dslr. The ability to zoom so far on the fly without changing lenses has allowed me to capture many great things. The macro is amazing, and once again there is no need to change the lens. Flower shots come out with stunning color. I use the panorama mode to lock the exposure for my panoramas but stitch the photos in another program as I have found the Olympus Master 2 program often shows seams if your overlap is greater than the software allows for. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the new SP590UZ to add some mega pixels and a little greater zoom capability, because I have been so satisfied with this camera.

Exceptional camera
I bought this camera for my husband for underwater. The camera is top of the line. He loves it. The only problem I have now is that the underwater housing for this camera was been discontinued before I could buy one. Olympus should give some kind of date on how long their products will be available. I would have gone with another camera if I had known. Now I'm searching for the housing. Found some online but reviews are terrible for these online stores.

Awesome
I can't exactly figure out the hate for this camera. Most cameras and high drain devices really need lithium batteries in them, to live up to their potential. My camera drained the batteries that came with it in 10 shots, which I expected to happen.
I usually use lithiums, but didn't have any on hand. I put a pair of nickel metal hydride batteries in it several weeks ago, and she's still going strong on those. Pictures are great provided you either use the flash, or a really steady hand without the flash. That's for indoor shooting.
One little odd item is the camera being able to take video, yet no sound. That is truly poor planning on Olympus's behalf. Not that I actually care about that. If I wanted a video recorder, I would have bought one. Still though, even my cheap 8mp Sanyo can take sound while shooting video. If you can pick one of these cameras up cheap, it's a good deal. I highly doubt I would pay more than a 100.00 for one though. My last expensive P&S was a Samsung, that has a nice aluminum casing. The casing on this camera is plastic.
The Camera is fairly quick to come on, quick to snap a picture, and quick to store it. The 3X zoom is lacking, but what 3X isn't. This day in age they should all come with at least a 5X optical.
One little nag that bothers me is the tiny little power button that is almost flush to the frame. It can be kind of hard to operate.
All in all, it's not a bad camera.

Back to the 1920's
This camera will really take you back. Prohibition. Woodrow Wilson. Ah, the golden era of silent film. Why the nostalgia, you ask?
This darn thing won't record movies with sound! Are they joking? What brilliant engineer thought this was a good idea? Give me a break. If you want to take movies, don't buy this camera
Rating :
I was disappointed in the picture quality. . .
I ordered this camera off e-bay factory-refurbished. I love the look of the camera-very sleek and sophisticated. But it was all show and not go. I was told by the company that this camera recorded sound in movie mode. I didn't see any speakers on this camera. Just know this beforehand. This one issue was not a deal breaker for me because I mainly bought the camera for taking pics. The main issue for me was looking at the LCD screen. The images looked slightly grainy/fuzzy for a 10mp camera. Also, I took this camera into the store and compared it to other 10mp cameras (Canon, Nikon, Kodak, Fujifilm, and other Olympus fes# and noticed a yellow/dull tint in the LCD screen in comparison. Imagine looking at the world with slightly colored amber glasses. That's what this LCD screen was like! But I am not electronics savvy, so I waited until I could print the shots to see the print quality. The pictures printed slighty fuzzy. But not the quality I would expect from a 10mp camera. I contacted the warranty department and they questioned whether I had it at a high enough ISO or whether I had set it to the right mode. But high ISO settings didn't change this. The customer service was sluggish to switch the camera but offered to look at it and repair it if need be. But I decided on another camera. I thought that problems with this camera was because it was a refurb, until I read other reviews that a blurriness was a problem with this camera. A few people have reviewed the Fe-25 as taking good pictures. I don't know which is true, I just know what happened with my camera, but I will stress that it was a REFURB.
I ended up looking at the Pentax Optio E60. It is 10mp with a clear sharp LCD screen and when I uploaded pics onto my PC they were so clear compared to the Olympuse FE-25. My final choice was between this one and the Nikon L18. I even liked the look, feel, and performance of the Pentax. One plus about the Nikon was that the LCD screen #3 inch# is really large compared to the Pentax #2.4 inch) and I liked that feature, but I can see just fine with the Pentax and I can be confident that I will get a quality picture! The Olympus Fe-25 ate my batteriers up after the first 50 pictures! The Pentax will last through about 150-200 pictures; and 3X that with two AA lithium batteries. Don't be fooled by the marketing or big names; because they may represent both great and also mediocre performers. I was not as familiar with the Pentax products or their history when I bought this camera; but if you are looking for quality pictures and features that are easy to use this is the way to go!

Battery sucker for FE-25
I brought this camera a few months ago. I tested everything is fine. But, when we try to use it, battery is dead. Then, we put in our charged (last week) rechargeable battery. It is still no battery power. Then, I put in brand new battery. It is good. A few days later, I tried again. Batter power is gone. I tested the battery, it is still good with my new Nikon L20 camera which I just brought for my daughter. So, I put in another new charged battery and it showed fully power and I left battery inside the camera for one day. Then it has no power today again. So, I do not know how much battery I need to bring to rely on this new camera for vacation. I think I need another camera for my next vacation.

Question : I got an Olympus digital camera. Not super impressed with the quality -- should i get a refund?
I bought an Olympus 8 megapixel camera with 5X optical zoom. I used to own a 8 megapixel Sony camera... the Sony had excellent quality (Carl Zeiss Lens). The Olympus camera was on sale so i decided to give it a try. it is difficult to take clear, focused pictures with this camera. should i get a refund? What is your experience with olympus cameras?Marie--what model was your camera?
Answer:
i've got an olympus fe310 (8 mp, 5 x zoom) & photos from it are fantastic. i've tried a pentax with similar specs. but the olympus is far better. what model olympus are you talking about ? are you SURE you've focused correctly before taking picture ? sometimes it is hard to focus on some objects that don't have good definition.

Question : Trying to restore pictures from olympus digital camera with xd card?
I am trying to restore lost pictures from an Olympus digital camera that uses an xd card. There was a problem when I went to load the pictures, and the camera screen said to format it. After checking the card for the pics (they weren't there) we formatted. I have used several programs to try to get the pictures, using a card reader. Are they lost forever? One site I went on said if you used an Olympus with an xd card you can't recover the pics. These are very important pics, and I need them back. Thanks for any help!
Answer:
They are not really gone unless you have reformatted the card, or written over them with new pictures. The blog below has put together some simple instructions and recommends a few free programs. I have used the PC Inspector and SoftPerfect products to recover my pictures as well as those of friends. In some cases I wasn't able to get all of my pictures, but I was happy to get back what I could. The first letter of the filename is lost but it's typically easy to figure out what it was supposed to beIt seems there are a few programs that recover pics from xd cards. See the links. You can google "recover images xd" to see what's out there.

Question : I have an old Olympus OM 10fc and would like to use the lenses on a new Olympus digital slr camera?
I have an old Olympus OM 10fc and would like to use the old lenses since I have about 5 on a new Olympus digital SLR camera. What kind of Olympus camera would you recommend?
Answer:
You can do that with any of the Olympus Digital SLR cameras using a simple adapter (Olympus sells the adapter for about $100 U.S. but you can get good ones from third party manufactures for between $20~$50). I have both types and would not pay the difference for the Olympus brand again). In theory they should work with Panasonic and Leica Four/Thirds cameras as well but I have not tried either of them (because I am not rich enough to own all three brands).Be aware that the focal length will be effectively doubled, the lenses will require manual focusing and "stop down" metering in aperture priority mode and there are limitations on the metering modes that will work. Olympus recommends a very narrow range of aperture settings but I find that OM the lenses work well at most settings. There are also adapters with an electronic "focus confirmation" sensor that will provide an electronic connection to the auto-focus mechanisms on Oly cameras, this causes the audible/visible focus confirmation signal to activate when you have achieved best focus. I have not used any of these and have heard mixed reviews where some people loved them and others hated them. This can be important because the viewfinders on DSLR cameras are not traditional ground glass screens like those from manual focusing film cameras but rather are clear screens with focus points visible in the viewfinder. The ground glass style is considered unnecessary because of the auto focus capability.
