Panasonic DMC-FS25 Digital Camera Features

iA mode for one-touch beauty
Press the iA button, aim, and shoot. With the FS25, taking great photos is that easy. iA mode activates six detection and correction functions including AF Tracking, which locks on and follows your subject so you get beautiful, clear shots.

  • MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) helps prevent blurring caused by shaky hands when shooting.
  • Intelligent ISO Control helps prevent blurring caused by the subject moving as you shoot.
  • Intelligent Scene Selector selects the most suitable Scene mode for the situation.
  • Intelligent Exposure adjusts the brightness of dark areas in an image.
  • Face Detection AF/AE helps capture sharp, bright shots of faces.
  • AF Tracking keeps the focus locked onto the subject, even if it moves.
LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens with 5x optical zoom
The 29mm wide-angle lens captures a wider area than a standard 35mm lens. This combines with the superior rendering performance of the Leica DC lens and 5x optical zoom power. Using the digital Macro Zoom function, you can pull subjects even closer than the closest point possible with the wide-angle setting, and capture dramatic close-ups.

Large, easy-to-see Intelligent LCD
The high-resolution, 230,000-dot LCD makes it easier to frame the shot before you shoot and check the results after you shoot. It also makes it more fun to view your photos with family and friends. The FS25's LCD is 3.0in. diagonal.

The brightness changes to match your surroundings
The LCD brightness automatically adjusts in 11 steps to match the brightness of your surroundings. This ensures good viewability even outdoors on a sunny day, and improved viewing comfort when you're inside in a dark room.

Easy-to-see menu display
The layout of the settings in the menu display is extremely simple, making it easy to see and switch the settings.

Not a satisfied customer

I've had my camera exactly a month. Nothing was wrong with it until the today when the zoom kept going out of focus and then a screen telling me to turn the camera off then back on. I did this and it finally said zoom error. It won't work at all now and the 30 days return was up on that day.

Camara was sold as NEW but box had been opened and NO manual

I gave this camera 3 stars for the plain fact that the box had been opened and there was no manual in the box. When you pay for a new product is it too much to ask that you recieve an un-opened box. The camera itself is what I wanted, a simple point and shoot that takes decent pictures in most situations.

DMC-FS25

I don't recommend buying this camera. If you are going to take photos of stationary objects, at close range outdoors, on a bright cloudless day, you will find the images very acceptable, using either the "IntelligentAuto" function or "Normal Photo" setting and 1-Area focusing. Daylight indoor photos are blurry and noisy using 11-area focusing, unless you force the built in flash. Stick to the 1-area focusing setting in "Normal Picture" mode for the best pictures both indoors and outside. The "AF Tracking" focus mode is way too slow, yielding blurry/noisy photos of moving objects indoors. The newer cameras have addressed this weakness with faster AF...now I know why! Many of these new compact cameras have too many un-necessary functions and settings, like 11-area focusing and face detection, which only tend to confuse the average user and ruin images, especially if one is pressed for time. The LCD and battery life are big pluses. I don't use the camera for video, so can't comment. By the way, both my ancient Panasonic DMC-FZ20 5MP and 8MP Canon A720IS take photos of superior quality to this 12MP camera. I will be retiring this camera to either my car glove compartment or the kitchen junk drawer.

An iA mode that's smart enough to remember facesThe FX48 features an enhanced iA mode that includes Face Recognition, a function that "remembers" registered faces. When there's a familiar face in the frame, it optimizes the focus and exposure so that the face is in sharp focus and bright. iA mode also activates a host of functions (see list below) that make it easy to get great shots.Bright F2.8, 25mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with 5x optical zoomThe 25mm wide-angle lens in this super-compact camera captures almost twice the area of an ordinary 35mm lens, making it ideal for shooting group photos indoors or wide landscapes outdoors. The 5x optical zoom pulls distant subjects up close, and the exquisite rendering of the LEICA DC lens lets you capture nuanced, expressive photos.Sorts and organizes photos with familiar facesThanks to Face Recognition technology, the camera can find photos of people and sort them in Category Playback mode. This makes it easy to display only photos of a particular person, or to set up a slideshow with just those photos.Create incredible 360° panorama photosA Panorama Assist mode makes it easy to take a series of images to combine into a panorama shot, while checking the degree of overlap between adjacent shots. This is great for shooting landscapes that are too wide to capture in a single shot.

Customer Review :

I returned it.... no thanks.

I gave this DMC-FX48 a Thanksgiving weekend test and it failed miserably.

The key problem? The ultra wide lens creates ultra distortion on the ends of the frame. I tried shooting my mother and sister on a Harley and they looked like rubber comic book characters on a bat bike. I'm not kidding. If I were laying down on my back shooting the sky, I'm sure the wide view would look simply amazing. But not for everyday shots, folks. 35mm is a much more natural view for a human being's eyeball. Oh, you're a realtor? Then maybe tone down and go for a 28mm instead to get those interior shots completed.

The video? HD was lousy as compared to my little Canon SD780 (which is ironically lousy for stills) - very grainy or nousy even as camera tries to adjust itself. However, these LUMIX cameras seem to shoot much better via WVGA video.

I returned it and have had much better results with a NON-wide angle lens camera with no HD video for only $110 and its the Panasonic DMC-FS7. I was shocked and still am. Macro also looks better on the FS7 which has outperformed a handful of cameras I tested it against at more than 2x its price. This includes testing shots in AUTO mode, outdoor, indoor, sports, sunset and video in VGA & WVGA.

Good luck! Finding the right camera can be a never ending search....

Very Good Prosumer Camera

Very good wide angle shots. 18x is too much, adding complexities to lens for casual and softer images. Too many modes.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K

I have never owned a digital camera, and being a college student certainly didn't have a lot of money to spend (the price has been raised since my purchase); so after spending A LOT of time reading reviews I decided to go with the Lumix DMC- FZ28 and couldn't have been happier with my purchase. The first time I used the camera was at a hockey game between the Bruins and Sabres. Granted I didn't have awesome behind the bench seats, but with the Lumix I was able to get right on the ice. Seats: [...]

I was highly impressed with the clarity of the pictures and also the details they provided. The camera itself is very light and is small yet not so small its uncomfortable to take pictures with like some cameras. There is not hotshoe, but the flash is more than substantial and can easily light up an item nearly 18ft away.

The video is pristine and amazing for recording concerts, so much detail and the quality is simple outstanding. It records at 30fps 720p which basically means if you want to do a lot of recording you're going to need a memory card. The internal memory for the camera is weak for videos and really doesn't hold many pictures so definitely look into a memory card.

Overall, the Lumix is very versatile in allowing users to customize settings, provides crisp clear pictures, and has easy to use functions. If I had the opportunity to buy it again I would as it has been a great little camera for beginning a transition into the digital world (on a small budget).

However, having owned the camera nearly two years I have now noticed that Scene Mode (High Speed Burst) setting does not work nearly as good as it used to. Such as with the hockey pictures it picked up the players in action quite well, but as of late it is slow and sluggish (I have done nothing differently so I am not sure what could cause this problem, but it's something to consider).

Disappointed with picture quality

Picture is grainy and not very highly defined. Pictures taken with 7 mega pixel simple point-and-shoot cameras look much better than pictures taken with this camera. Very disappointing for a higher quality camera.

Great camera for most amateur photographers

I've taken pictures for many years, beginning with a 1940's 35mm Argus where you had to set the lighting, focus and everything else, a professional zoom Nikon, right up to a point and shoot simple digital and this camera is such a good choice, you can adjust it to do most anything, but in trying to simplify life, I have used mostly the auto focus mode and am extremely impressed with the results; especially using in areas without a flash. I have taken great pictures of fireworks and gotten close-ups of lectures and grandsons on a school stage all without using any other special settings. As for the auto focus, it has a fine point, so that, for example when I have taken pictures of cherry blossoms, pointing at the blossoms, have a good close-up and then move the auto focus point a bit to the Jefferson Memorial and gotten a good picture of it with the cherry blossoms still in the picture. The auto stabilization works fine, especially when pulling out the camera fast for a quick picture. The zoom brings most objects in for suitable viewing, even from several hundred feet away.
The battery does seem to run out sooner than I expected, but then that is also because I am constantly using the zoom feature. I simply bought another battery and have it charged at the ready. The camera will tell you when the battery power is running low.
My only complaint has been I have lost two lenses because they don't seem to fit tightly on the threads enough to stay there. Otherwise it is a camera that is `big' enough to take wonderful pictures, but can be tucked into a bag of a medium size pocket in a backpack.

small sensor, big quality

I love my Pentax DSLR, but find it too bulky and heavy for hikes and some travel. I bought the FZ28 because of reasonable photo quality and, unlike the ultra compacts, I can actually hold and use it without tripping buttons I don't intend to. Understand that the sensor is teeny-tiny. The physics of the situation guarantee problems with noise, and that any attemps at noise reduction will smear detail.

Use the viewfinder to frame and trust the autofocus. This finder was never meant for fine focus and any composition but framing. When I need to hold the camera steady, I use the finder, instead of the screen.

I actually find that, even shooting JPG's, the overexposure warning is a bit hysterical. Opening them in Photoshop, I find there's some headroom left. The colors are not the over-satuated kandy kolors of some compacts; they're natural.

I do agree that noise reduction takes too heavy a toll on image sharpness. I found the noise excessive at ISO 400;ISO 100 makes a world of difference. My advice? Shoot at 100 whenever possible and shoot RAW if you have the gut feeling the image is worth the work. Turn the Noise Reduction down as far as it will go. Deal with the noise in your RAW processor. You will see color fringing in your RAW images, because the JPG in-camera processor isn't there to deal with it. My CS2 deals with it easily.

I don't like the supplied software; very unintuitive. If using SilkyPix (and if you dislike it as much as I do), I save the RAWs as 16-bit TIF's and work them in Photoshop, OR save your Panasonic RAWs in a file. Download Adobe's DNG Coverter for free. Identify the files in which you have your RAWs and in which you want them saved. Hit "Convert" and all your Panasonic RAWs will be DNG's. Work the DNG's in any editing software you wish. I use Photoshop CS2.

Formatting the card is too big a production. FORMAT is too deep in the menus. I'd like to see the RAW setting accessible via the Quick Menu.

Couldn't be happier

I have had this camera for nearly 2 years and I am still awed by the 18X Leica lens and the quality of images even when zoomed to the maximum optical zoom. I have been a photographer for a long time and still remember that with my old 35mm Nikon the 300 mm lens (not a Nikon because of the cost) was heavy, long and required so much light to be able to shoot at a reasonable shutter speed, it was often unusable. Those days are gone and this entire camera weighs only a fraction of what my old 300 mm lens weighed by itself. The lens is so fast that it can be used under otherwise questionable light, especially with the optical stabilization. It's true that the battery life is a small issue but everything else more than makes up for it.

Would be a great camera but it's a dust magnet

This camera was great in most of the ways the 5-star reviews here say it is. I don't know if maybe mine was just a lemon but it had dust on the CCD right out of the box which ruined my pics of an air show I attended. I sent it to Vann's for service and they sent it back to me about a month later without even fixing it. I'll never again do business with a dishonest outfit like Vann's. Anyway, I sent the camera to Panasonic to get fixed under the warranty and they sent it back in 3 days, perfectly clean. I kept it in a clean camera bag, lens down for a few months until the next summer and, sure enough, I had more dust on the CCD which ruined my vacation photos. Took it to a local camera shop which charged $60 to take it apart and clean the CCD. Two weeks later, more CCD dust, more ruined photos. This camera brought me a years worth of grief, frustration and ruined photos of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. I won't buy a Panasonic camera again and I hope Vann's goes out of business.

Years Later, Still Works Well

I bought this camera a few years back, back when it was still being produced. Through heavy research I decided it looked like the one for me, and haven't ever, not to this day after thousands of pictures, been disappointed much by it. Still viable as a point-and-shoot for day-to-day applications; it takes pictures that look quite good on a computer screen, even as a desktop on a modern monitor, though that is near its resolution limit and noise becomes visible but not prevalent. I don't print my pictures so I cannot tell how they come out.

Though 5 megapixels never looked outstanding, it's plenty for almost all applications, and with the lower resolution it can store upwards of 700 pictures on a 2 GB memory card. The screen is good-sized and adequately bright even for direct sunshine, and it looks good too. Menus are simple and fairly intuitive as are most controls. Burst mode seems to work well enough, and the self-timer takes three shots rapid-fire, so at least one will turn out well. The Starry Sky mode is useful for its intended purpose but also works much better for night time landscapes than the Night Landscape mode which tops out at 8-sec. exposure; Starry Sky can be set to a 15-, 30-, or 60-second exposure. Video can only be recorded in VGA or the smaller QVGA sizes, but at 30 fps it looks good given its size. Battery life is pretty good and the battery holds out well over the years.

On the down side, it's got flaws. Macro mode can't seem to focus very close at all, though that could be due to my camera's age. Though manual settings exist, they are very limited and do not include a manual focus. Also, the low light performance isn't impressive, and the flash has a short range inside of which everything is washed out and outside of which everything is dark. Though 10x zoom is nice, it is useless for distant scenery, but that's the result of haze and I see no way that could be avoided. The image stabilization may be inferior to most modern cameras but works well for my purposes. If your lens cap isn't tethered, it's easy to lose and expensive to replace.

All and all, it's a good camera that has served me well over the years and still shows little sign of wear. Though I have been looking at replacing it, I haven't yet, and likely won't for a while yet, and even when I do it will be because of the newer features and my increasing demand for a very high quality shot, but to be honest, I will have to spend quite a lot to get a device capable of producing a better picture than this one. So, If you buy it, you will like it, and it will serve you well for years to come. Just don't lose the lens cap!

Amazing camera!

This camera is capable of such amazing quality photos! For a camera that only has 5megapixals (?), the photos come out with such clarity and accurate color and shadows. I can take professional quality pictures that are sometimes up to par with my friends' $1000 professional cameras! My mom is an artist and bought this camera to take pictures of her artwork and art subjects because it takes "true color" photographs, meaning the color that comes out in the pictures was the actual color she saw with her own eyes. Many other cameras at similar price wash out the color a lot or make the picture look very grainy. I love this camera!!

An excellent value in digital cameras

I bought a TZ1S in 2007 and used it for three years. For no obviouos reason it quit working. So I replaced it with a $68 used version. My local camera repairman doesn't think much of these cameras, but I've made excellent photographs with them.

Rating :

Fits prefectly into a needed niche

I bought my 1st TZ1 2 years ago, and have made sure I have at least 1 near me at all times.
I have bought, used, gifted and had stolen 6 of these cameras to date.

This camera filled a void in my camera world perfectly, as I have 2 Canon G-Series for anticipated shooting, and had a few smaller digitals that I would use for everyday work/misc pictures. This camera has been great.

Pros:
When I received my first TZ1, the first thing I did was extend the full zoom and shoot some stabilized pics. They were great and I was amazed. Zoom blur was gone even at 10x!!

Then I shot a stablized video, and while its was not perfect, it was better than my non-stabilized 12x video camera!! Unlike other "picture" camras, you can use the zoom while you are taking a video, and the was a compact camera 1/4 the size!! Out went my video camera.

This camera will fit into my pocket when on a work site, and take every picture I need. I use it almost daily.

Colors are good and saturation is above what I expected from a compact super-zoom.

I was able to buy an underwater case from Panasonic reasonably for this camera as well. It works perfectly, and due to the cameras small initial size, even with the case it is not too big to haul around the Ocean. The underwater pics it took are excellent, and the flash works pretty well too!! A great bonus!!

This is a very very versatile picture and video camera.

Cons:

The battery life is only fair, and the small S007 batteries seem to fail totally in too short of a period of time.
Replacements of both Lumix brand and aftermarkets have been no better. There is a limited expectation for such a small camera/mega-zoom/battery combo, but this should be better.

Flash effectiveness and dependability has been spotty, especially with the last 2 cameras. While I did not expect an amazing flash, the overall flash results are a bit weak. The first 2 I owned flashed well and about as expected, however lately I have had a couple of flash-sync issues that are bothersome. Could be the used/refurb purchases.

Summary:

I rated the camera 5 stars because its issues do not outweigh its advantages at all. There is no perfect camera or woman out there, or everyone would own or want only that one.

This camera fills my compact camera need wonderfully, and even gets used as our primary video camera.
I was a little sad when the newer models went to a wider angle 10x and gave up light efficiency (f2.8 to f3.3) for it. I prefer this f2.8 lens much better, with clearer low light pictures indoor.
This would be a perfect entry camera for a novice, or a student, or a grandparent.
I am glad to see other Mfg's following Panasonics lead in this arena. This is a wonderful little camera.

Question : Lens rattle with new panasonic digital camera?
Hi, I just got a new Panasonic FZ18. I noticed that there is a rattle coming from the lens when I tip or handle the camera. Just wondered if this is common in this model??

Answer:
This may be normal. There is a loose element in the lens that, when in use, compensates for hand movement when using the optical image stabilization.Try turning the stabilizer on using Mode 2 and see if you hear the rattling under the same conditions. Mode 2 is continuous stabilization whereas Mode 1 is on-shot, I believe. Try Mode 1 also if you still hear rattling just in case.

Question : Whats better a Nikon or Panasonic digital camera?
Trying to buy a new camera, im looking at a Nikon and a Panasonic, which one should i get?

Answer:
Look at Nikon, or CanonMy preference in the larger DSLR's are the Nikon's (of course!)Canon makes good stuff too, but I prefer the "ergonomics" or layout on the Nikon. In the smaller Point n shooters, Canon may have the slight edge. Both cameras are good, but Canon gives a larger selection of cameras with an "optical viewfinder" which I prefer in the bright sunlight. Those LCD viewfinders can be hard to see in bright sunlight.Make sure you get one with the VR (Vibration Reduction, Nikon)or the IS (Image Stabilization, Canon) to help you get good shots in the low light tough shooting conditions.

Question : When taking a video clip using zoom with my Panasonic FZ30 digital camera, the focus drifts in and out.?
When taking a video clip using zoom with my Panasonic FZ30 digital camera, the focus drifts in and out. What might cause this and what can be done to correct it? Thanks.

Answer:
You can't correct it because the camera is trying to focus on what ever it can find in the frame. It's an automatic function programmed into the system. So if you move the camera while it's recording or if you're trying to record moving objects, this will always happen. I know because I own a Fuji 9000 that is video capable and it does exactly the same thing. The only cameras I know of that don't do this are SLR's that are video capable. They don't because you can set the lens to manual focus and then twist the focus ring yourself. Automatic cameras don't have this function.

My guess is that this is a fault in the CCD sensor (the "film" in a digital camera). There were a rash of these problems in sensors produced by Sony in 2005 (see link below) with the common symptom of a horizontal line appearing on the image. Many companies were will to fix this fault for free. You have (possibly) two options. 1. If you can gain access to the sensor (depending on the camera, you might be able to take off the lens to get access), you might use a lens blower to try to knock off any dust, etc that fell onto the sensor. It's possible (though unlikely) that this is your problem. 2. You can call Panasonic and tell them about the problem, highlighting that this is a sensor fault, and try to get them to spring for the repair. If they won't the cost of the repair is probably prohibitive (around $200 for Canon), so you'll end up tossing the camera.
