Just awesome!

Funny story... My daughter had this camera summer 2007, I got used to using it (stills, video, audio tags, etc) I just had to get one for myself! After taking the time to learn all the functions I use it all the time. Compact enough to put in my pocket, durable enough to handle sitting on it if it was my back pocket! Took it to Rio Brazil and it did awesome!! Negative comments on using it in low light or dark... they were just not doing it right or not patient with the operation. I took night shots of Rio from The Sugarloaf that were beautiful.
Transferring pictures is easy, use the supplied cable or remove the SD card and use your card reader (if you have one!)
Get this camera, get an SD card (2GB or more) and enjoy! You will not be disapointed in your purchase and now the price is even lower!!

Great compact camera!

I purchased this camera to have in my purse when I am out and about. It isn't logical for me to lug around my big Sony, so I wanted a camera with easy to use features that was not going to feel like a piece of junk.

I have a 35mm Pentax camera that I absolutely love, so I decided on the Optio M30. This camera feels solid, despite it's tiny size. the LCD screen on the back is very clear and easy to see. The menus are logical, easy to set up, and picture quality is excellent.

I don't mind having to take the battery out to charge it. I have to take my batteries out of my Sony to recharge as well. As far as battery life, I have been taking photos for several days, and the battery still doesn't need to be charged.

The only thing I would say that is a downside on the camera is the shutter delay. It takes a while holding the button before you actually get a pic, but I didn't expect lightening fast capture in a camera of this price.

All in all, a nice little camera. I will put it to the real test this weekend in Vegas.

PENTAX OPTIO M30

I'VE HAD THIS FOR OVER A YEAR NOW AND LOVE IT. I GOT MY WIFE A CANON SD1000 AND FOUND THE MENU ON THE PENTAX EASIER TO NAVIGATE. TAKES GREAT PICTURES. ALOT OF PICTURE OPTIONS. BE SURE TO GET THE CORRECT SD CARD FOR RAPID SHOOTING. LOW LIGHT IS ALWAYS A PROMLEM WITH ANY DIGITAL CAMERA OR AT LEAST IN THIS PRICE RANGE MAYBE. NICE LOOKING CAMERA. RECOMMEND FOR EASE OF USE, PICTURE QUALITY, FEATURES AND PRICE.

Good Point and Shoot if you get for the right price

I shopped this around and got it for around $80 with a 2gb SD card. At that price, this camera is a good deal. I wanted a shirt pocket-sized camera for landscape and posed shots with friends, and that's what this is. Some of my shots came out absolutely terrifically, fit for printing.

I would not recommend it even for a toss-in-the-purse camera if, for instance, you want to get shots of your kids on the playground. Many of my pictures with a bright sky background came out with striations. Also, the shutter lag is noticeably longer than even my five-year-old introductory Canon PowerShot (great camera, but not pocket-sized). If you're shooting active subjects outdoors, you'll miss more shots than the $40-$60 price difference (again, assuming an $80 price for this one) you probably need to get a pocket-sized Canon.

Evening or low light pictures have problems consistent with all point and shoot cameras.

Menu functions were as easy and intuitive as Canon's.

I'll try to post a sample of the best and worst this camera did on a trip to Seattle.

Buy this camera

I got this camera with a very good deal, including a 2GB SD card. You will love this camera, it is very nice looking, takes really good photos, and interfaces with windows vista (which I use) perfectly. It seems to be last year's model, not that you can tell the difference. Even the instruction book is for once easy to read.

I did a lot of research before buying, and each camera has very mixed reviews..one review will say that a camera eats batteries, the next person says they get great battery life..so you don't know what to get. Same with picture quality, etc. etc. etc. Finally I settled on this one and I am really glad I did. It was good enough to get me to actually do a review!

Shop around, the prices are variable to some extent. I paid 69.99 delivered and with the SD card and couldn't be happier with this.

Editorial Review :

Early Adopters Pick: March 2003. The world’s smallest 3.2-megapixel, 3x optical zoom camera.

The Pentax OptioS is so small it can fit into an empty mints tin. Smaller than the size of an average credit or business card and just over .75 inches thick, the OptioS boasts a high-quality 3.2-megapixel resolution and a 3x optical zoom lens in a sleekly designed, tough aluminum-alloy body. A new "sliding lens" system allows this lens to move up, away, and lie fully flush with the camera frame to protect the lens and allow for the camera’s tiny dimensions.

Optics and Resolution
Featuring a 3.2-megapixel CCD sensor, the OptioS delivers images up to 2,048 x 1,536 pixels and prints up to 11 by 14 inches. The zooming capacity of the lenses is augmented with 2x digital zooming, which offers smooth operation and realizes a combined zooming power of 6x zoom. It features a focal range of 5.8-17.4mm (35-105mm equivalent in 35mm photography) and maximum aperture of f2.6-f4.8.

Storage and Transfer
Images can be stored in the internal 11 MB memory or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMediaCards (MMC). Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB storage-class connectivity, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the OptioS can also record movie clips of up to 30 seconds with audio at 12 frames per second. The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

More Features
The OptioS has been specially designed with audio recording capability rivaling the abilities of standalone audio recording devices. This can be exceptionally handy for recording important information in meetings. An index can be added during recording for easy playback.

  • Shooting modes: program, picture mode, night scene, movie, panorama assist, 3-D image, digital filter, user
  • Picture modes: landscape, flower, portrait, self-portrait, surf and snow, autumn color, sunset
  • White balance control: TTL auto, preset, custom white balance
  • Autofocus: 7-point AF, spot AF, and infinity landscape mode
  • 1.6-inch color TFT LCD screen with histogram display

Power, Size, and Contents
The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included). It measures 3.3 by 2.0 by 0.8 inches and weighs 4.1 ounces. This package includes the OptioS digital camera, battery and battery charger, USB and AV cables, hand strap, and CD-ROM with image software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

Pentax Optio S4 - worked fine...for awhile!

I've had my optio for almost a year and a half now, and it worked well for the first year. As soon as the warranty expired, the flash randomly stopped working. I had to bring it to a Pentax repair shop and luckily I lived in a city which had an official Pentax repair store (Vancouver). However, since my warranty had expired, it cost about $170 (including tax) to get it fixed. The guys who fixed it were super fast and it took only 1 week to repair - but still, $170 for a broken flash? Come on. This camera is very small and slim and it is easy to carry around in a purse. I found that the only problem that I had with it was that there is quite a delay between pressing a button to take the picture, and the flash going off and the picture being taken. After using a regular camera (non digital) for many years, I expected the picture to take immdediately while pressing the button. This can get quite annoying when taking action shots.
All in all, I am still really enjoying the camera after getting it fixed. Hopefully nothing else breaks. Perhaps getting an extended warranty would be a wise idea for those purchasing a new camera.
This camera is quite popular, as I know about 5 other people with it. However, they also share the same complaint about the delay problems.

Tough little camera...inside it's case

I bought this camera from an Army PX right before I shipped out to Iraq. I've been back for three years now, and it is still my one and only camera. It has survived every thing I could dish out; I even ran over it with a golf cart (don't ask me how that happened). The one catch? I keep it in the Altoids tin that it was designed to fit into. That is hands down the best thing about this camera.

Why hasn't other manufacturers done this? Who knows. Keeping it in that bulletproof (not literally) little case has made up for the flimsy battery cover, and the sensitive gear that extends the lens. You should see all the scratches on the outside of the mint tin.

It takes great pictures, and having a camera so small that you carry it around everywhere you go means you never miss a picture.

Pentax? Never Again!

I've bought Optios S from amazon 1,5 year ago. It came with a malfunctioning LCD. Thankfully amazon sent me another one because as I saw the service (!!??) of Pentax I don't think that they would accept such a thing.

The new camera was good for a while. Very light. Even with its original bag. Easy to use, easy to transfer. Fine picture quality for a 3mp camera. But...

Then one day it said memory card error. I've lost all my pictures in it and I was left with a broken memory card. I thought it was a problem of the memory card. But this happened with 3 other memory cards too. My one year was over. I don't think anything would change if it wasn't over.

Now it started to have focusing problems. I'm using my camera very rarely and keeping it in a good condition. I don't suggest Pentax to anybody anymore.

bad quality, only last 2 years

We bought it in 2004, now 2006, it is broken. I'm very disappointed at the quality of this camera, wish it is me that look for digital camera at that time, I would check out some reviews people have here. I have used other digiatl camera, have much better experice. Don't waste your money if you want to keep a camera longer than 2 years.

Over a year now and I still love it

I've had my little Optio S for over a year now, and I still love it. So far I haven't had any problems with it- I was worried by some of the reviews that mention problems with the plastic hinges, the lens jamming up or the customer service problems. So far I haven't dropped it, the plastic is holding up well and I haven't had a need for customer service.

I wouldn't say I take pictures every day, but my Optio S has been used a fair amount. On average I take about 30 pictures a week up to 200+ pictures a day while on vacation.

It does fit in an altoids tin, but not when you put the wrist strap on it. I've found the "wrist strap" is actually long enough so you can wear the camera as a pendant.

Picture quality is great for the average photo taker. Battery life I'd rate as average. So I spent the money for an extra battery. With two batteries fully charged, I've never had a problem running out of juice.

I do wish it had a better optical zoom, but for such a small package I guess there had to be some trade off.

It does have a high "Wow!" factor.

All in all, I've been very happy with this little camera.

CL) PS1) PENTAX OPTIO W30 DIG CAMERA

Customer Review :

Terrific camera for multipurpose uses

We bought this camera as an upgrade to the pentax optio w10, which we loved and owned for 1 1/2. My husband went swimming with the w10 and forgot it was in his pocket so after 3 hours of swimming in depths of 10 feet or more he did ruin the camera. So we replaced it with the w30. I was so pleased with the upgrade. It was awesome. I loved the picture quality, sound, how many different settings you could put it in. It is an awesome camera. I never felt like I couldn't take it places. We took this camera in several pools and to Hawaii where we used it numerous times in the water. We also took it to water parks and even dropped it in the tub a couple times (not on purpose) but it worked great. I liked that i didn't have to worry. My daughter also put it through the wringer by dropping it off the table, pulling it out of our hands and throwing it, dunking it in the toilet. It worked great. We had it for a year and we would still have it but it was stolen. A very very sad day for us. I am no professional photographer and our pictures are just for our pleasure so for me the picture quality was great, even when printed. I am sure someone who uses DSLR and high quality camera equipment could find things wrong with it but it was perfect for what we were using it for. I ended up relacing it with a cheaper canon and couldn't be more disapointed. I used it for 4 months before tossing it and getting another w30.

Pros:
Take it anywhere
Durable
Compact
Easy to use
SD card
Good video and picture quality
Has a clock and alarm
Lots of choices settings

cons:
delay time between pictures (a couple seconds but nothing to bad)
makes a sound when you turn it on (some might not like that)

good for a fun / waterproof camera, but overall not great pics

Bought this for my wife so she'd have a compact camera to take around. We were going on a trip around some beach areas and rivers, so I thought a waterproof model would be a good choice. Also I have a Pentax DSLR and it takes great pictures. However overall I wish we had gotten a compact Canon camera instead (I have an A-640, and it takes great pics underwater with the extra waterproof housing, which goes down to 100+ feet, unlike this Pentax which only goes to 10 feet!). This camera is "compact" but not super small, a little bulky still for a pocket. The biggest problem has been the focus and exposure... it always takes so long to focus, and often picks strange exposure settings. Also being used the the Canon, it's so difficult to get any kind of manual control (e.g. exp compensation) to override the auto settings on this camera. There are just a ton of little icons for every auto/scene mode you can imagine! Many shots come out too light or dark, or very grainy because the camera has picked a very high ISO. On the good side, we haven't had any problems with the camera leaking at all, it still works fine after a number of (not extensive) uses in and around fresh and salt water, as well as the occasional drop in the water glass as a party trick.

Anyway, the short of it is if you have extra money and really need a camera for the beach or rafting or snorkeling then this might be a good option. But if you want something to use around water once in a while but mostly just to have a good compact point and shoot digital camera, then look elsewhere.

Cheaper then the W20, Quality and Price

After owning a W10 and W20 I expected the quality to continue increasing. I was disappointed with the W30. I like my W20 the best. The focus on the W30 sucks, even after you hold the button 1/2 way it will decided to re-focus often which delays the shot tremendously.

Great little camera

This is a great little camera. I bought one a couple years ago. I dragged this camera all over Europe and up and down the east coast and the pictures are always great. Never had to worry about dust or water with its great construction. I'm sure there could be a few bad ones out there but mine wasn't one of them. Just dont be lazy. Inspect the seal dont take them for granted. The battery life isn't bad. I could go days with our recharging the batteries and that is with taking 50+ pictures a day mixture of with and without flash. I would have no problem buying one again.

Questions & Answers
Question : Pentax ist digital camera not working with fresh batteries?
My Pentax ist appeared to be out of batteries, so I replaced them, but it is still displaying the low battery icon and not turning on. I've had this happen before with cheap batteries that don't have enough power to run the camera, but I just put in Energizer lithium batteries which can usually power it for a few weeks, or even months depending on how many pictures I take. I'm going on a trip in a few days, and would really like to have a working camera with me, any help is appreciated :)

Answer:
I have an *ist Ds model, and it never really liked lithium's either. Probably should look in the manual and see if lithium's are even recommended, but really my cam works best with plain old energizers, and also rechargeable crv-3 batteries. Oh and of course pull them out, and make sure you have them installed correctly (duh). Good luck :)

I really want a new small Digital camera for christmas and i have found 2 i really like and cant decide. Price doesnt really matter so whatever is best. I will be using this camera for taking pictures on trips with my friends. I will not be using it for professional use. Please Help!

Question : Problem with my Pentax digital camera. New batteries keep saying batteries depleted?
My screen on my Pentax digital camera keeps saying batteries depleted even though I have new batteries in the camera. Help

Answer:
I dont know which model you have from Pentax but my model Optio 30 also has the same trouble. My experience is if you have a pair of new alkalines it will work otherwise not at all. Rechargable batteries should do better but I never tried them. I tried CRV3 once, it is good but of a little bit more initial cost. It will do better if you follow some strategies to avoid battery consumption such as turning off the LCD screen, less use of zooming and flash, etc. Otherwise, Pentax is better in performance than many cameras and my model is very good for shooting practise.

Question : Does anyone know if some one made a conversion kit for a Pentax film SLR to a digital camera?
I hate to abandon my my Pentax film camera its a Super program SLR, I wandered if a replacement CCD back kit to convert it to the digital age.

Answer:
No. Leica tried that about four years ago. The back cost more than a DSLR camera, so after a couple of years, Leica dropped that product.Just buy a good Pentax DSLR and use the lenses you have on both. I still have 3, 35 mm SLR's which I use from time to time.

Question : Pentax digital camera not connecting to Vista computer to upload pictures?
I've been trying to fix my dad's computer and camera problem. He has a Pentax digital camera and when we connect it to his computer with the USB cable nothing happens... usually when a camera is connected it will prompt something to appear on the screen and then you can upload photos from the camera, but in this case nothing happens. I've made sure the camera is ON and in playback mode. The USB cable seems to be OK. Also, tried different USB ports on the computer. Anyone have any ideas?

But they are not photos. I don't know what these files are. They are between 6-8MB each. Could they be data pertaining to the photos?

No. It would be best to format your card right now to get rid of all traces of them.

Question : Does anyone know anything about a Pentax Digital Camera?
Is it a descent camera or would I be wasting my money on a crappy camera? It is a Pentax E10. I dont know much about digital cameras so I would appreciate any help! Even if it is just an opinon!

Answer:
Comcast Shopping does not rate this camera very highly. The users seem to really like the Pentac M10, which does not cost too much more than the E10.I admit that there are only 4 reviews for the M10 and 3 for the E10, but the users had some really nasty things to say about the E10.

Question : How do I change the date on my pentax optio digital camera??
The digital read of the date on my camera is wrong. i would like to be able to lood at my pics and have the right date taken displayed. does anyone know how i change it on the camera??

Answer:
Read the booklet that came with the camera, that's why companies include them in the box!You didn't indicate which model you own so it's difficult to give you exact instructions. But since most Pentax cameras have similar layouts and buttons, the general way to change the date and time is to go into your settings via the "Menu" button. You should be able to see a "Date Adjust" item in there. If not, use the 4-way controller to navigate through the menu. From here, it should be pretty simple; use the 4-way to adjust the date and time settings.
