So, so disappointed.

I was thrilled to find a reasonably priced camera from a company I used to trust - what a disappointment. After only a couple months of light duty taking pictures of my kids and dogs, it now randomly shuts down regardless of how fresh the batteries are or what I do to try to solve the problems. When it shuts down, sometimes the lens stays open. Right now, I have this camera on my desk, stuck open, dead as a doornail. We tried cleaning the battery contacts but no dice. Google "s85 shuts down" and see that other people have had this problem.

What a battery PIG

First let me say that I love Samsung products. However, this camera is a battery PIG. I can only take up to 15 pictures before the camera starts beeping at me that the batteries are low. The video recording feature is very useful until you get 30 seconds into your video and the batteries are dead. I have tried 6 different kinds of batteries and the best have been the Duracell for electronic devices, which got me 23 pictures before being dead!! Great camera poorly executed. Come on Samsung, get it together.

Decent photos in daylight, but...

This camera takes excellent, high-resolution pictures outside. I found that it even worked quite well for action shots when there is plenty of sunlight. However, taking pictures indoors was another story. If there is any motion, indoor pictures come out blurry and grainy. I had tried taking pictures of hockey, in a very well-lit ice rink, and the pictures always come out brown and grainy. I have adjusted the settings as well as I could, but the amount you can change the aperture and speed of the exposure is very limited, even in the "Manual" mode. I even used a tripod, and the improvement was only marginal.
Now, after 1 year of working normally (and the warranty expiring), it has developed a severe problem. It shuts down unexpectedly, regardless of the charge in the batteries. It does with with new, alkaline batteries as well as fully charged NiMH batteries. It takes pictures for a minute or two, then just shuts down. It does not even retract the lens. It just goes black. Obviously, there is some kind of short or poor connection in it, but it does not appear to be related to the battery door (a common problem area on many digital cameras).
Thankfully, the credit card I used to purchase this extends the warranty, so I should be able to get my money back.

Shoot. Create. Share. It’s as simple as that. This Digimax camera makes lasting memories for your family. The camera’s 5x digital zoom captures crisp images and can get any party started with numerous flash modes, including a handy red-eye reduction mode. You can also create unique photos using black and white and sepia modes, bringing an added elegance to a romantic shot or an adorable baby picture. Plus, add up to 10 seconds of voice audio to any still image for that extra creative touch.

Customer Review :

It can take a licking, but it's afraid of the dark.

I just recently purchased a new camera because after three years, my Digimax A402 is on its way out, now. I'm a little sad to see it go because it's been a good little camera for the most part, although it performed poorly in certain low-light situations.

I dropped it on a stone-covered grave in Tombstone, AZ (that was probably about hot enough to fry an egg on at the time) about two years ago at a height of about four or five feet when I nearly fell over a young kid whose parents were allowing to follow me around. Except for a small scratch on the lens it came through the experience functioning just fine.

But now, apparently simply due to age, it's stopped functioning normally. It thinks its batteries are low even when they're fresh, is not adjusting to light, and is taking very blurry pictures.

Still, it took good photos for more than a year (probably closer to two) after being dropped, which is more than I expected in the moments after it actually happened.

Pros: Has a good bit of internal storage, takes nice clear photos, is very compact, is very easy to use, has a landscape mode that takes great outdoor photos, and survived a heck of a fall.

Cons: Was over-priced considering the features (no optical zoom, only a digital zoom, only 4 mega pixels), has a soft LCD screen, flashes three times in any flash-using mode (sounds like no big deal but it can be irritating, especially in my favorite setting - concerts, and drains the batteries), has a looong shutter delay, and does not do well in low light.

MAJOR WARNING about the flash and low-light situations: If you turn off your flash in portrait mode, or use a low-light mode, the shutter delay becomes positively interminable because the shutter speed is slowed, which it does automatically. Because most of the photos I take are at concerts this is totally unacceptable. You have to hold incredibly still to take a photo that isn't severely blurred and your subject can't move for several seconds (I counted a shutter delay of over five seconds.)

Leaving the flash on is often not an option because if you have a crowd in front of you you're going to get a better photo of the back of their heads than of the stage. This became infuriating and is for me probably the camera's biggest drawback. I eventually found a solution to this problem... electrical tape over the flash. The camera functioned much better in concert situations with this little improvement. However, I never found my makeshift solution acceptable. A fast shutter speed (which is sluggish even at its best) in low light should definitely be an option on this particular camera but it is not.

Recomended for: People who need a compact, durable, easy-to-use camera mostly in outdoor situations (where it excels) or indoor situations where a flash is acceptable. A good camera for a family.

NOT recomended for: Anyone who wants to be able to take detailed photos of far-away objects or in dark conditions, or anyone who wants to be able to closely control their camera's settings. Concert and club goers take note: this camera may not be for you.

The Best Little Camera

Ok considering it's specs it's a 4MP 4x Zoom little camera it is an excellent camera. I've had mine for 4 years now, it's still alive and just a few weeks ago the tab that holds the battery inside broke. I've used this camera a LOT so it's been pretty worn out and in 4 years has never given me any problems. The pictures quality is pretty good considering its 4MP, the video feature is O.K., the sound is good, but you can't use the zoom option when using the video. You can also use it as a voice recorder although I never really used that feature as much. The batteries will last for at least 2-3 days taking pictures constantly. What really does wear out the battery quickly is the video feature, and using the Night Scene. The scenes that it has aren't that great bc most pictures come out blurry unless the camera is in a steady place. You can adjust the lens to a macro option, but you have to measure the distance well bc the picture might turn out blurry but after a few tries you get the hang of it and can take pretty great macro pictures.
Overall I loved the camera. Obviously there are better models now, but if you want a good little point and shoot camera that isn't really expensive at all, easy to use and with video this one is just right!

Not the best

The size is nice and it is fairly simple to use.Although it's not exactly a dinosaur camera, it did not deliver the quality I anticipated. It's a Samsung so I was expecting great performance. A little disappointed.

Excellent camera but only for awhile

I bought this camera for Christmas 2005 and at that time it was a great deal for small and good quality pictures (4MP is still pretty decent), but 2 years later the flash stopped working without any reason.

Not the Best

This camera is not so great. I received it as a present some years ago, so I can't really complain all that much. It's getting rather old anyhow, as far as cameras go that is.

Positives:
--It takes pictures.

Negatives:
--The camera itself is fairly bulky.
--The photos generally turn out pretty bad. Many of them have large lines running through them.
--It takes the camera quite a long time to turn on and then it beeps for a while.
--Batteries get the life sucked out of them. The batteries it came with couldn't even keep the camera on long enough for it to stop beeping and let me take a picture.
--The date and time is printed on every picture in large, orange font and it resets itself every time the batteries are taken out. I have so many pictures with the year 2055 printed on them and can't figure out how to remove the date.

Overall I would recommend you not to buy this camera, but that's up to the buyer.

Good camera for the price

You can probably find this camera at a very low price. The picture quality is quite good, and once you get used to it, its fairly easy to use and gives good results.
Be aware that, when using flash, this camera uses up AA batteries very quickly. I'd estimate you can get 20+ flash pictures before you'll need to replace the batteries. You'll get better battery life when taking pictures in sunlight, without flash.
The camera does support a DC power supply, but finding a DC power supply that matches the specs listed in the manual may be difficult. I finally located one at a specialty camera store.
Finally the manual, Samsung web site, and Samsung customer support leave MUCH to be desired.

Had this camera for YEARS and it still works

Just wanted to say that this camera has some great durability. I got it for Christmas when it first came out so I've had it for almost 7 years now or something like that. It still works, though I have a new camera now. I'd sell it if I thought I could get anything for it.

A little slow...

I bought this camera as my second one. I had previously a Polaroid PDC640, image was really crappy with that one.
I was very happy with this camera, UNTIL I bought a 128MB smartmedia card. Camera turned very slow. It tooks me nearly 27 seconds to get the camera ready to take a shot, and flash fully charged. Indeed, as someone commented out here, this is NOT an action sports camera. But you get what you pay for.
Overall, I'm happy with it, despite the fact that is slow.

Question : Help! My Samsung digital camera won't open its shutter or turn on. I tried to recharge battery but not work!?
I have a Samsung SL202 intelligent LCD digital camera which I love. Few days back I got a low battery message then it shut down. I used my USB cable to recharge the Li-ion battery, but it is not recharging. I have taken the battery out and put it back in, jiggled the chords, etc. What am I missing???? I am quite frustrated. Any help or thoughts greatly appreciated.

Answer:
Maybe the battery is done for. Batteries don't have eternal life nor can sleep for eaons. No they are chemical little storage cans that will lose their ability to hold energy slowly. After harsh use or a certain time, a few years that is, the rechargable battery is unable to hold charge. So what to do? Buy a new battery, available on your online and local photo stores :)Remember batteries are chemical waste!

Question : Where can I find a good repair shop for my new Samsung digital camera in Morocco?
On extended vacation in Casablanca, Morocco. My new Samsung digitial camera I bought in the States has quite working and keeps saying low battery even when new batteries are put in. Also the focus has turned blurry. Cant seem to find anyone to repair or even understand the problem. It cost §80 new US cash to buy a new one here would be close to §200 for the same model, not an option. Any help would be greatly appreciated, a trip with no pictures would be really sad!

Answer:
Forget it, just buy a new camera! That is what being a good little consumer is all about!Buy a$200 camera, In your case get it for $80 in another country and when it breaks its cost $200 to send it to be fixed (not to mention the BS and run around). You see finding a shop that fixes small electronics is impossible, there just is not enough pay on the investment for people to that anymore, you will just have to send it in and deal the inconvenience!Or Buy a new Camera!Things today are designed not to last and be very expensive, sorry!

This camera uses an SD memory card, you don't say what type of memory card your San Disk card is so I can't tell you if it will work or not.If it's a small, thin rectangle and says 'SD' on the bottom left then it will work with your camera. If its a square and says 'CF' then it will not work.Hope this helps.Thomas

Question : how long do samsung digital camera batteries last?
i just bought a samsung digital camera today at circuit city, and just after a while its battery power became very low. i tried to change batteries, but the other ones don't work. i keep trying to figure out how the battery became so low when i just bought it today! and sometimes when i was taking pictures to test it out, it would just shut off or turn on itself. does anyone know why?

Answer:
When you buy a new camera, mobile phone or something like that, you have to charge it for 4-5 hours. Then you must use it.There are different batteries. "AAA" or "AA" and so on. The little one is "AAA". pay attention to it.And try to use rechargebale batteries. Yeah, they are more expensive than others, but it will last nearly 2-3 year. (you have to give it energy day-by-day)And dont forget, if there appears any problem, You may contact to "shop sale or technic manager".

Question : Can i use a 2gb or 4gb memory for the Samsung NV3 digital camera?
The instruction manual says the Samsung camera holds an external memory up to 1GB, what is the maximum it can support.

Answer:
It takes SD cards but not SDHD cards. So a 2GB SD card will work, but not a 2GB or 4GB SDHD card (all bigger capacity cards are SDHD)

Question : What is the indication that my samsung digital camera is charged ?
what is the indication that my samsung digital camera is charged ?

Answer:
It depends on your camera. But usually there's a bar - similar to those on cell phones - that show how full the battery is. That bar gets shorter as the battery drains. Always good to keep the battery charged by the time it gets to the 1/2-1/3 mark in case a great shooting oppty comes up and you don't have a couple hours to charge.I always carry a spare charged battery (and extra memory cd) with me too...
