Sony DSC-S85

If you're in the market for a digital camera, there has never been a better time to buy. The high tech electronics marketplace is absolutely glutted with digital cameras; nifty features and consumer options are way up, and prices are way down. Currently available digital camera models cover the resolution range from less than one megapixel to almost eight megapixels. An average user really only needs 4mp as this is great quality for enlargements up to 11 X 14. Many newer cameras on the market are overrun with too bells and whistles that make it difficult to find a camera that takes truly great pictures consistently. The DSC-S85 does just that, great pictures consistently and with no problems. I have had my camera for 2 years and never had any issues with blurring or poorly lit photos. The settings are straight forward and the camera is easy to use.
The DSC S85 has a Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar 3X zoom lens, an accurate auto focus system, an optical view finder, and a 1.8-inch LCD display, all in a compact package that looks and performs like an upscale 35mm point and shoot. The 4.1 megapixel CCD provides superb images (2272x1704 pixels) that actually get pretty close to the resolution of a scanned 35mm negative (3000x2000 pixels) giving digital photographers excellent image quality.

Beautiful camera. Won't accept my 1GB card.

I bought this camera for the many features, and the nice lens it has. Unfortunately, it won't take my brand new 1gb card from sony. I also tried my 1gb psp card and it won't work.
The famous c:13:01 error comes up.
there's a 128 mb (old out of production)card that might work, but the cheapest is about $40, and is not even new.
You can't buy a new one either, since they're not made anymore, like I said.

The Sony DSCS85 an older camera with many good qualities

For those of us who are technically challenged, this camera is a good start. It has many features. The instruction book is easy to follow. The picture quality is excellent.

Good camera for it's time

This was my first digital camera, I've had it since 2001 and have taken over 3,000 pictures with it. The image quality is excellent, My biggest complaint is that the auto focus is sometimes erratic. I've had pictures sometimes end up out of focus for no reason, and it's not always obvious looking at the display. Battery life is good. Camera has a good selection of manual features, Auto white balance setting consistantly gives great results, Build quality is excellent, The shutter lag is slow compaired to newer cameras. A very good camera at it's time, Image quality is as good as most newer P&S cameras.

The best first camera

I got this camera as a gift 4 years ago and it's seen a lot of use since then. This was a great first time camera. I took wonderful pictures with its automatic settings and even better ones once I learned how to adjust them to the scene.
Currently I'm upgrading. While I love this camera, there are much better prospects on the market now.
This camera has downsides that come with age:
-Size & weight are too much. It easily gets in my way.
-Turn on time and delay between pictures have both made me miss many spur of the moment shots
-Battery is big and obsolete. My biggest problem right now is I can't find the charger and if this camera only used AAs it wouldn't be such a big deal. When I can charge the batteries, they don't last very long. I always need to carry two fully charged ones if I'm going to be out for a day.

Still, this camera taught me a lot about digital photography with just playing around with it. I don't think I'd have picked anything else that was out there 4 years ago.

Just When You Thought the H-1 Ruled!

This an absolutely fantastic camera. My wife has an H-1 and the first difference she noticed was how much lighter my new H-5 was. That's a big deal for lugging a camera around as physically large as this one is. But you know what?...There is no substitute for a quality large lens. I do a lot of macro work and this is the best non SLR digital for macros I have ever tried. And the zoom movie thing is a big improvement over its predecessor. And the best part for me was that I found this gem for a steal price of $150 (original box, all acces, 2 gig card, case) on Craig's List. So the deals are out there and this wonderful camera is my best ever score.

Horrible camera! Expect 30-50 terrible pix per battery life.

Two comments on this miserable camera.

-- Battery life is unbelievably short! Not more than 50 shot with lithium or NiMH batteries - and about 32 with Duracell.

-- Shutter lag is 2 seconds or more under any circumstances, guaranteeing that just about any shot is missed. You'd think that the shutter lag at least improves clarity with stellar autofocus, but that that is not the case; you'll get blurry shots of your kid's butts running out of frame.

Also, low light timed exposure shots are extremely grainy. This camera is inferior to my 3.2mp Kodak in just about every meaningful metric.

Sony DSC-H5

My son writes this review:

I would just like to comment on this camera and add my opinion of it. We bought it used, so the shutter button was already broken. I'm not bummed about that because this camera has a manual focus that can be used to get the right picture, if the auto-focus won't do it correctly.
I've found that the battery life is actually okay, but that was after I received some better batteries. The batteries are Energizer Rechargeable, 2450 mAH, and they work! I put in a new set at least a week ago and they're still going strong! Some people might be a little skeptic so I'll expand: I don't take pictures all week, but on a given day, I might take at least 20 pictures and then review them a while, erase the ones that I took, then start all over again!
The flash is rather powerful, so it would be good to tone it down a little at close range.
It's not the most portable camera, but compared to an SLR, it is a little toy. I found a case that fits it exactly, with room for a Gorilla Pod at the bottom, and an extra set of batteries.
This camera takes excellent movies! I was stunned when I saw the first movie I took, even though in a quiet movie the motor will come through as a humming. The sound of the movie, in the camera, isn't that great. A movie that I took of a chime choir sounded horrible on the camera, the high notes came in as a "chang"ing sound. On the computer, it sounded fine.
Overall, I'm very impressed with this camera, who even though being rather outdated by today's standards, is still very good.

Don't waste your money, it's junk.

These are nice cameras but they have a serious (fatal) problem with the shutter button. The button falls apart which renders the camera useless. This has happened twice with the camera I own. The first time it occurred under warranty and Sony fixed the problem although it occurred on vacation in France which was a bummer. Now the exact same problem has reoccurred and Sony wants $171.00 to fix it. I'd save my money or buy a Nikon or Canon. If you'll notice this is not the only review that mentions this problem.

Blurry photos

Half the photos were blurry, even on auto mode. Tried everything. Very disappointed.

Rating :

a great camera, takes pictures IN FOCUS!

The number and type of features seems very straightforward and easy to use with this camera.

Unlike many "point and shoots", the DSC-W300 actually focuses quickly and accurately.

Light exposure is also done very well.

Sometimes Sony puts out cameras that don't do one of the above so well.

Case in point: DSC-W290.

It frequently takes pictures that are blurry, despite taking too long between the button press and the picture actually being taken (during which time it's supposed to be optimizing the focus, amongst other things). (By the time the picture finally does get taken, whatever you were hoping to capture is probably already over.)

Watch out for Sony's deep discounts on the DSC-W290, it's because relative to it's predecessor the DSC-W300 & some competitor's models, it's a lemon!

Battery Life Is Horrible

The camera itself is great But I can't ever use it. The battery doesn't hold a charge, It's okay if you plan ahead and pull the battery and charge it up first, but if you need it on a whim the battery is always dead. My old Kodak would stay charged for months and would always be ready when I needed it. Not this camera, I can never rely on this and would never buy another Sony camera again.

Sony DSC-W300, excellent camera

I have a high end digital camera but it's too big to carry with me to catch a casual shot I might run across. I did my homework and chose the Sony 300.

The steady shot gives crisp photos in dim light when the shutter speed is slow. It has the feel of a well constructed camera and the Zeiss lens gives a sharp image from edge to edge.

I bought a leather case for it to protect the finish from scratches and abrasions while being carried around in my pocket or backpack.

I saw a few reviews where owners complained about the tele being only 3X but when designing a zoom lens, the greater the range you give it, the more compromises the designer has to make. I find 3X more than adequate for what the camera was designed to be used for. That is, family, parties, vacation, etc. If I want to do some serious telephoto work I'll bring my other camera along.

I almost took a star away for "ease of use" because there are so many options available to chose from. Then I remembered I could simply put it on the full auto setting and all I have to do is aim it and push the shutter button.

I'm willing to pay a little more for quality and with this camera I feel like I got my money's worth. It has both the look and feel of a high quality camera.

I'm very happy with my purchase.

Wrong Charger supplied with my camera

The overall quality of the Sony Cybershot DSCW 300 13.6MP looks very good, but unfortunately I can't actually try the camera because Amazon sent me a camera with a battery charger that can't be used in the United States.

In speaking with Sony, I learned that the charger I received is the charger that is used in countries other than the United States or Canada.

Sony has graciously agreed to send me the appropriate charger free of charge.

Question : How do you go to the trash bin in a Sony digital camera?
It's a sony Cyber-shot DSC-W120 digital camera. I Deleted the pictures by accident andI really want to get them back. Thanks

Answer:
You are thinking that your camera works like your computer, sorry but it does not, once you have deleted them then under all normal circumstances you have lost them. If you have not taken other photographs since you deleted them so that they have not been overwritten you can contact a specialist company who deal in data recovery. There may be software you can purchase that will do the same job, how effective it is I have no idea. You will have to do a search of the internet to locate it. Whichever way it will probably cost you, so it depends how important these photos are.Regards.

Question : Which is better a Sony or a Canon digital camera ?
I'm panning to buy a good digital camera and i'm wondering which is better a sony digital camera or a canon. Do you know any good model to suggest ?

Answer:
Sony tends to be lower end. They're limited on lenses and feel cheap. Sony has been making SLRs since 2006 and Canon since the early 1900s. Who do you think would be better?

Question : Driver for connecting Sony Digital Camera to Windows Vista OS?
Hi,I have a Toshiba laptop (A205) with OS Windows Vista. I am unable to connect my Sony Digital Camera to my laptop through the USB because it does not recognize it. Can anyone recommend any site where I may download a driver so that I can connect my Sony camera to my Windows Vista running laptop? Thanks in advance.

Answer:
here is a list of some sony drivers for cameras:http://www.camera-drivers.com/companies/965.htmyou also might want to check at toshiba's website, maybe you just need to update the usb drivers on your computer. for that check here:http://support.toshiba.com/You also might want to make sure that you have administrative privileges so that the camera can be setup when you plug it in Hope some of that helps. Check my website for more tips, tricks and reviews:http://digicamtown.blogspot.com/

Question : Will any Sony digital camera body work with the older Minolta Rokkor lenses?
I have many good Minolta Rokkor lenses I've used on several Minolta SRT camera bodies. I understand that Sony bought Minolta so will any of the Sony digital bodies fit the Rokkors (like the older Pentax lenses do with current Pentax digitals)?

Answer:
There is an adapter but its hard to find although a visit to the Sony web site might be helpful. Other than that just keep checking on eBay. Unfortunately, when Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000 AF camera in 1985 they changed their lens mount. Sony now uses the A-mount so any Maxxum AF lens will work just fine on a Sony DSLR.

Question : How do I get a deleted Sony digital camera picture back?
I just deleted a picture that I really liked from my Sony digital camera, is there anyway I can get it back!! Thanks for the help! :)

Answer:
No, you can't get it back. In the future, upload your pictures to Adobe Album Starter Free Edition after you take them so you don't lose them.
