does what it is supposed to

I bought this camera for my girlfriend (thus the pink version). I chose this one so that it can fit in her purse and can be powered on and take pics in less than 2 seconds. The 10 mb pics look great, the detail is amazing. She is really happy with the purchase. Unfortunately this did not come with a mem stick, but the 4 gb of internal memory are quite sufficient. I'd recomend purchasing some screen protectors and a case.

Very Disappointed

I purchased this camera in January, and have regretted it ever since. Everything is worked via touchscreen, which is great for my iPhone, but with this camera, it means that real time and effort is required to change picture settings. This is worst when it comes to video. With my old T-100 (which I loved) you could flip a switch and be instantly in video mode. With the T-700, you need to turn the camera on, then start working the touch screen to get there. What this means is that you can no longer start recording with just a moments notice, it's now a process. The video quality also seems much worse than my old T-100. The same is true with picture settings; both hands are required to change them, so there is no longer that freedom to just flip the front down and start shooting. Perhaps most frustrating of all is that you can no longer opt to turn the flash on (although you can turn it off). The flash is only available if the camera detects that a flash is needed. This means that when there is a backlight that you'd like the flash to offset, you need to change the photo type to "low light" so that the flash will kick in. How lame.
I would've given this camera two stars, but for the worst feature. When you try to review your photos, you (well, I) get a message that says "processing images". It takes about 10-12 seconds to get to the photos (it should take 1). This used to happen occasionally but now happens to me almost every time.

It does take pictures, so it's not completly worthless, but I won't be buying a Sony Cybershot next time around. - Ryan

Sony Never Trumps Canon for Photo Quality

Canon always takes better quality photos. Memory Stick from Sony is over priced in comparison to standard SD card. I sold this camera to a friend.

Poor reliability of the display

This camera was working just fine until last week when the display went blank. I really like the camera and was hoping to keep it for a long time. I bought SONY because of my past experience on other products such as TV, stereos, DVD but unfortunately SONY really disappointed me with their digital camera quality. I was not expecting a Japanese made product such as Sony to be of such low quality (for the display). I read some of the other complaints and I was not surprised to read that most everybody had the same white display issue I have. I am a quality engineer myself and I can tell Sony did not perform a DFMEA or any of the other Six Sigma tools on this camera. My first thought was that this camera was made in China but to my surprise it was made in Japan....what happened to SONY's quality?

Great camera for the last 5 years!

I bought this camera in 2005 as a refurbished item in the Sony store for $125.00 (reg price was $180 back then) For 5 years it has been the best camera I have ever owned, taking the most clear photos. Good flash even in dark and shaded places such as nightclubs, the photos come out bright & clear as a bell. The photos look like postcards-very professional. I dont know why people give it mediocre reviews. They must have the settings wrong. But recently in 2010 after 5 years, lately my LCD screen started blacking out occasionally, although it did not affect the camera's ability to take photos. Just occasionally I could not see the picture I snapped on the LCD screen. But When I plugged the camera into the computer, I found that the camera had still taken the photos and they still came out beautiful. I started shopping for a new camera. So far, I've ordered two new Canon digital cameras so far with the 10 Mexpixels and sent them back for a refund. The pictures are not as clear or bright as my old trusty Sony. I think I'm going to find a camera shop and have them to fix the LCD screen so I can keep this one. I simply don't want to part with it.

Terrible low light performance that seems to get worse as time goes by.

Having this for more than 3 (5?) years I can say that it's merely adequate.

Night shots and dusk shots are disappointingly grainy. But then again the rule of thumb for cheapo point and shoots is that their low light performance is generally bad. And good luck if there's movement. And for some reason I get the sense that it's gotten worse if that's possible.

Shots with plenty of light are good. I've taken some photos that were surprisingly good at high resolution with great color and sharpness.

The screen has grown small on me. Maybe because of my worsening eyesight though.

I'm now looking forward to getting a Canon or Kodak camera and spending some good money on them. I wish I could afford the $1000+ cameras, but I'll make do with just a better P+S than this one.

I haven't experienced the defects that a lot of people have had with the screen going white. Maybe I'm lucky. But as a review of an item that's gone through it's operational life I can say that this is either a 2 and a half stars or 3.

Was a top rated in 2005, failed the test of time

I purchased the Sony DSC-S40 for $199 in July of 2005 and it performed very well for several months. The addition of a memory card and lowering the resolution allowed me to take more pictures than I could ever need at any one time. Picture quality was superior to my previous digital of similar pixels and the movie feature worked far beyond my expectations.
After a customer service suggested "reset" due to a screen malfunction, the camera performed for a total of 14 months before the white screen of death appeared. The camera was repaired for free (due to completing a product registration card and having logged the calls to customer service) and worked for four more months before being left for dead.

Pretty decent camera

Pretty good all around camera for what it is. Battery usage is not bad, don't use rechargeables or you will be disappointed in the performance. You can take lots of pictures with a 1gig care before its full. Uses AA batteries which are easily obtainable almost anywhere.

Picture quality is pretty good, focuses pretty easily. Movies are pretty good. Overall an easy to use camera.

Rated a 4 because it is inexpensive.

On/Off problems..don't buy

After reading some of the other reviews here, I feel I must also report on/off problems with this camera. Sometimes it works fine, but most of the time when you turn the camera on it will either briefly power up and then immediately shut off or stay on for a few seconds and then shut off. I have changed batteries repeatedly, so it isn't dead batteries, although it does seem to suck the life out of batteries very quickly.

I've had this camera since late 2006 and it worked fine for a little over a year. I can see two possible causes.

1.) Defective on/off switch.
2.) Poorly designed battery compartment. The connectors are so tiny here and recessed into the cover, I don't see how they can make good contact with the batteries. There also seems to be some room for the batteries to wiggle within the compartment which may cause intermittent contact.

I like the camera when it works, but now I am debating whether to spend the money to send it to Sony for repair. If the problem is #1 (above), what's to stop the switch from going bad again. If it's #2, this is a flaw in the camera design and probably can't be fixed.

Ashamed it's a Sony!

I bought this camera because of Sony's history of making excellent products. Boy was I disappointed! After a few weeks the camera would turn off by itself, flash internal diagnostic malfunctions, and basically just refuse to work. Not only is it useless but it burns through batteries (rechargeable and alkalines) faster than the speed of light. I usually got less than 15 pictures or four minutes of video. I could not find my receipt to return it but with shipping and drama I have decided to turn it into a boat anchor instead and live-and-learn. Reading other negative reviews about this product I can only surmise somebody was asleep at the switch when Sony designed this camera. I have continued to grow dissatisfied with other Sony products and will buy from their competitors from now on.

Typical Problems

My daughters camera seems to be experiencing the same problem as others. She bought it at 14 years old with her own $ to take on a school field trip to Washington. She took about 50 shots and then the power button would only work randomly or the lense would freeze coming out or closing. Being an electrical engineer I would guess that the motor for the cover/lens draws so much current that the battery voltage drops so low that the camera shuts off. I have tried brand new Eveready Copper tops with no luck. If I try it 4 or 5 times and can't coax it to life I can sometimes set it to view the pictures and then slide it over to the take picture mode and it will stay on. I feel bad as I talked her into a $300 Sony telling her to buy a good brand name and it would last for years. Tough lesson for a 14 year old spending babysitting money!

THE BEST CAMERA EVER!

I love this camera, it takes great pictures, it is so user friendly, and is built like a tank but is really light. I have taken exelent pictures with the open shutter mode on the camera and the color options are awesome. This camera is so easy to use, you turn it on, you press the button and you have a picture, press menu and you have all of these settings at your figertips! I dropped this camera many times, the last one i dropped it on the ground and the memory slot opened and the card popped out! (opps!) but it works just like it always does. This camera is made for everyone, the pro photographer, the middle user, and the person who is new to photography. I would recemend sony and any of it's exellent cameras to everyone.

Amazing little camera !

Our job requires us to take photos almost everyday, so we have tried and worked with many digital cameras in the past years. We bought the DSCP100 like a year ago, and we have been more than pleased with it. The size of the camera is great, the quality of the body is amazing. Battery life is great too. It takes very good pictures, and starts working immediately, so you will not loose that special scene.... Because all of the above, we simply can't stop using the little DSCP100. Sony got it right with this camera !

Sony Cyber-Shot P-100 Focus problem

This is my second Cyber Shot camera. I was hoping this would be a giant leap forward. Technology strides forward and this camera was hoped to be much better than my last 3.2Mp version. But this is a disapointment in that the camera has trouble focusing. Right after I got the P100 I loaned it to a friend to take wedding pictures and most came out blurry. I found that it is necessary to press the shutter button slowly to achive a clear picture. Even pressing slowly to give the lense time to focus does not help always. I am highly disapointed with this camera. I wonder if there are any really good cameras of this size that are any different. Buying cameras to find out later they don't work properly is too expensive of a game for me. I don't know what I might purchase in the future. This I know it will not be another Cyber-Shot camera.

excellent camera

I'm an amatour photographer and I have this camera for 3 years. I've travelled a lot during this 3 years w/ my camera and I have nothing to complain about the quality of its images. The only thing that I would consider is its width dimension in comparison to a newer version... also, the display size is much smaller than the newer models. But talking about pictures quality, I have NOTHING to complain about it...it's excellent!!

Question : i broke my sony camera, should i invest in a new sony digital camera or buy a canon?
i've heard canon brand is better than sony, but since i already have the battery, charger and memory card i was thinking about getting another sony.. so do i buy a Sony camera or go for a Canon?????what's your advice?

Answer:
Tough choice, but think the Canon below would really be the best.Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Please read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.Canon A590IS $134.99 at Best Buy or $116.30 at Amazon.comhttp://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...Camera reports batteries low, but is it low charge or bad electrical contacts? Overcharging can ruin good batteries! The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between batteries and camera. Digital cameras require lots of power. Bad electrical contacts can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but will be viewed as low if contacts are not really good. The LCD screen is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. Bad contacts make cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be severely damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with safety timer, temperature monitor, and trickle charge technology ($9.76) at Walmart. For longer life, use Duracell 2000mAh batteries and a full cycle charge monthly. To preserve battery charge, use the view finder and not the LCD screen when possible. There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera. The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...Lots of great camera tips in these two links. http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=38/10468/6368/333&pq-locale=en_US ...Check this more for the money camera. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic. Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Well, the camera surely came with a USB cable for that very purpose, so find it, and plug one end into the camera and then plug the other end into the back of your Mac and iPhoto will open and download the photos for you.If you don't have the cable, you'll have to get one, probably on eBay or somewhere like that. Just do an online search for "USB cable sony dsc h20" and you'll surely find one.Good luck!... ☺

Sony tends to be lower end. They're limited on lenses and feel cheap. Sony has been making SLRs since 2006 and Canon since the early 1900s. Who do you think would be better?

Question : Looking for a good sony digital camera?
I'm wanting a good digital camera, but not something that would cost a million dollars. It can be other brands but I would prefer sony... So I'm looking for a camera that isn't bulky... but I guess most digital camera's aren't. I'd like a good picture quality as in... no random white dots if the lighting source isn't good, or anything like that. Fairly quick picture taking would be lovely... and if the camera's limit is only limited to the memory cards' limit. Also being able to record clips... if there could be some sound. I was looking at some of the lower grades of sony camera and I noticed recording doesn't have sound. And again, I'd prefer sony, but I guess it doesn't really matter.

Answer:
Since you prefer Sony, here are two pretty well reviewed models of Sony that meet up to your requirements. Both have fast response times and they both take video with audio. One is the Sony N2 Here is a link with info and review :http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/n2.htmlSecond is the Sony T100Here is a link with info and review :http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/sony_t100.htmlPersonally I would go for the N2 because of its larger sensor but then thats a personal preference because on the other hand, the T100 is VERY compact. Here is a link to a site where you can compare image and video quality :http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=1&ma1=32&mo1=&p1=2049&ma2=31&mo2=&p2=1450&ph=5Good luck!

Question : How do i identify fake Sony digital camera from a genuine one?
I recently purchased a Sony DSC W150 camera. There are soo many fake Chinese built fake sony cameras in market here in Sri Lanka. I just want to know if there are any possible ways how I can make sure the camera i purchased is an originally a Sony made one. Thanks in advance...god bless

Answer:
Contact 'Sony'. Keep your serial number in hand. This is the only error-less and sure way to know.

Question : Video from Sony digital camera has watermark on it?
I have a Sony DSC-w290 digital camera. I filmed a short video clip and, when I put the file on my computer, it has a huge watermark right in the middle saying "evaluation copy." It doesn't show up when I view the video on the camera, just on the computer. I ran it thorugh a couple different converters and video players, but it was still there. How do I get rid of it?

Answer:
You pay for the software and the watermark is removed.
