Great Item - If it worked or Sony supported their products
This camera has nice features for its size, very compact and offers good resolution and options. The startup time for power up is very fast. Unfortunately the camera I received new in the box does not focus properly, so all of the pictures I take are blurry. I followed Sony's directions for repair, sent it in and a week and a half later received the camera back with the exact same problem thanks to Precision Camera Repair. I called Sony again for the same problem and had to fight with them to have them pay for shipping of the defective item. I may have to wait up to 10 days to receive a UPS shipping label from Sony. It's been a month since I originally purchased the item and await a shipping label to send it back for repair the 2nd time.
My mistake was purchasing a discontinued product from a company that does not have a supported return policy for defective products and dealing with a manufacturer that doesn't support their products directly, but through authorized service centers. Be certain to order any Sony products from a company that will accept a defective return, because you really don't want to deal with Sony unless you don't mind waiting several months to use the products you purchase.

| Editorial Review :
Providing the ultimate in FD Mavica features, the MVC-FD97 delivers the benefits of dual media capabilities and an impressive 10x optical zoom lens. With 2.1-megapixel resolution, aperture and shutter priority settings and an eyelevel viewfinder provide imaging solutions unmatched in this category. A logical step-up from the MVC-FD92, the MVC-FD97 offers dual media function, 2.1 megapixel optimal image quality, an impressive 10x optical zoom and MPEG Movie mode to capture audio and video. The MVC-FD97 has a Memory Stick Slot that fully enhances the functionality of FD Mavica. Image data saved in the Memory Stick and floppy disk can be interchanged freely, which enables two-way internal data transmission. A new Copy Mode allows users to proceed copying in case the total file size of images exceeds the size of a floppy disk (1.4MB). The copying process continues with the replacement of a new floppy disk. The MVC-FD97 offers a new Clip Motion Recording Mode. Just press the shutter button, images captured will be converted to Clip Motion and automatically connected as continuous frames. Users can easily make animation and save the file directly in Memory Stick without going through any computer process, while the Clip Motion files can be played on a computer. Other newly added functions of the MVC-FD97 include MPEG Movie Recording Mode and USB terminal. Users are able to capture short movie clips up to 85 minutes and 20 seconds with an optional 128MB Memory Stick. The USB terminal allows for speedy transmission of data and images.

Are the pictures clear??
When asked to take pictures at work, my wife requested the use of my FD97. Not going into a lot of detail, the first comment out of a supervisor's mouth was "look at the blood glistening on the barb wire." That says it all in picture quality. I will agree with one other person here who mentions the slowness in recording, especially with the memory stick. There is a problem taking pictures of active targets. And the picture you get may actually be a millisecond later than you pressed the button - a lot of time for those kids to move around. Vacation shots are a dream come true. And the zoom telephoto let's you crop your pictures before taking them. I get about 140 pictures using 1600 pix on the 128 memory stick. I recommend it five stars, my wife and I each own one now.

Looking back, A Really Good Camera
I've had this camera since 2001 and it still takes great pictures (it's also nice to see the price (used) is close to what I paid for it new back then). The only drawback I'm now finding is uploading pictures to Windows Vista. Sony hasn't (at this point) made updated drivers available for this particular model, hence my Windows Vista-based laptop doesn't recognize the camera when attempting to upload images. Hopefully, this situation will be corrected over time, as it is a great camera for pretty much everything else.

Not so good for fast moving subjects
I bought this camera as a replacement for an FD91. I loved eveything about the FD91 except the need to carry a bunch of floppies around with me.
This camera solves that with the memory stick option, yet still let's you use floppies for when you want to take a quick couple of shots and hand the pictures off to someone else. The only problem I have with it is that it uses a focus and exposure lock when the shutter release is pressed halfway. This doesn't work when you are following a moving object. By the time the camera is ready to fire the object has moved and is no longer in focus. I read the manual thoroughly and found no way to override this feature other than shifting to manual focus. The FD91 had a continuous focus system so this problem never occurred. If you don't shoot a lot of fast moving objects, this camera is superb. If you do, you will be dissatisfied.

Memory Chip Slow
I have had my FD97 for a year now. I bought it to replace my FD71 because I needed one that would give me pictures that would print out good 8 x 10s. This one takes excellent pictures that print perfect 8 x 10s, which I need for my business. There are only a couple complaints I have about the camera, one is the slowness in recording, especially with the memory stick. The other is the problem to taking pictures of babies or any child that might move before the camera decides to record once I press the button. It is wonderful for stills, but misses a lot of otherwise good pictures of my grandchildren!

Haven't Found A Downside Yet
After having shot at least 1000 pictures with my Mavica FD97, I have yet to find the downside. Features I especially like: Optical 10X zoom. This optical zoom covers any situation I have encountered, from getting-up-close to the action while staying behind the fire lines, to getting close to a facial shot without distortion or intimidating the subject. High resolution images. When coupled with a good printer, the resolution of the images shot at the highest available count renders a print that looks continuous-tone, even under a jeweler's loupe. Ease of operation: Basic operations enabling great pix are quick to master. Advanced options aren't necessary to utilize in order to get the picture desired, but they are there, and I have yet to discover their full potential.

Great little camera!
I think this camera is great! It just amazes me how people bad mouth things that are not perfect. I got a great deal for $179.99 at Officemax back in August 2007.
Pros: Perfect compact size, and takes great pictures. I take it everywhere Great price! Everyone I show my pictures too always says, wow you camera takes good pictures". Easy to use! Flip the door down to turn on is very cool.
Cons: I do notice the white spots every now and then, but it is not all the time. And yes it has a monsterous all in one chord, but so what? And no one likes the red-eye reduction mode everyone says they go blind from it, so I had to turn it off. and now all my pics have red eye.
So do not listen to all the bad reviews here, this is a great little camera. I am very happy with my purchase.

DO NOT BUY!!!
I REPEAT!!!...do not buy this camera..or any other sony camera for that matter....Many people, including myself, have experienced a very simple but devastating problem with it. IT WILL NOT TURN ON. The battery is fully charged and nothing. I tested the battery in another camera and it worked fine so the problem is with the camera. And by the way, i find it kind of funny how everybody that i have spoken to who has this problem mentioned that it didn't happen until after the 1 year warranty had expired. Save yourself the heartache that you will experience in little over a year and stay away from Sony!!

I wouldn't recommend it.
I've owned this camera for about three years. I am always pleased with how fast it takes the pictures in the daytime without flash, and how well. But at night, as other people have complained, I have experienced white spots, but only on a few. Other than that what I really hate about the flash is that it takes SO LONG to actually take the picture!!! If you are taking a picture at night of something going by you, by the time you press the flash and it takes 5 seconds to actually take the picture, the object is gone and you missed the shot. I HATE that about this camera. The size and design are cool because it fits in your pocket, but that's not a reason to buy it. Pick a different camera.

Question : Which is better a Sony or a Canon digital camera ?
I'm panning to buy a good digital camera and i'm wondering which is better a sony digital camera or a canon. Do you know any good model to suggest ?
Answer:
Sony tends to be lower end. They're limited on lenses and feel cheap. Sony has been making SLRs since 2006 and Canon since the early 1900s. Who do you think would be better?

Question : What is the estimated useful life of a Sony digital camera?
anyone know the expected useful life of a sony digital camera? filling out a fixed assets form..
Answer:
There must be a table for this somewhere. I'd expect it to become "obsolete" after 3 years, even though it is still functioning. If you plan on buying a new one in 3 years, I'd call the useful life 3 years.I'd expect it to need repair or replacement in 5-to-7 years, though, if you don't drop the thing. You don't say which camera, but most entry-level DSLR's seem to have a shutter rated at 50,000 cycles, so any point and shoot would be at that level or lower, I am sure. How many pictures do you take per year? Divide that into 50,000 for a maximum life span and I think it would be 100% defensible on audit.

Question : Which Sony Cybershot digital camera should i buy?
I recently started looking for a new Sony Cybershot digital camera. My very old DSC W100 (8.1 MP)is outdated, but i like its features (such as vivid, black and white, sepia, increase sharpness, increase contrast. Do you know of any new versions of Sony cameras with these features that isn't as outdated?

Question : Will any Sony digital camera body work with the older Minolta Rokkor lenses?
I have many good Minolta Rokkor lenses I've used on several Minolta SRT camera bodies. I understand that Sony bought Minolta so will any of the Sony digital bodies fit the Rokkors (like the older Pentax lenses do with current Pentax digitals)?
Answer:
There is an adapter but its hard to find although a visit to the Sony web site might be helpful. Other than that just keep checking on eBay. Unfortunately, when Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000 AF camera in 1985 they changed their lens mount. Sony now uses the A-mount so any Maxxum AF lens will work just fine on a Sony DSLR.

Question : What happens if you loose your Sony digital camera uploader cord?

Question : Looking for a good sony digital camera?
I'm wanting a good digital camera, but not something that would cost a million dollars. It can be other brands but I would prefer sony... So I'm looking for a camera that isn't bulky... but I guess most digital camera's aren't. I'd like a good picture quality as in... no random white dots if the lighting source isn't good, or anything like that. Fairly quick picture taking would be lovely... and if the camera's limit is only limited to the memory cards' limit. Also being able to record clips... if there could be some sound. I was looking at some of the lower grades of sony camera and I noticed recording doesn't have sound. And again, I'd prefer sony, but I guess it doesn't really matter.
Answer:
Since you prefer Sony, here are two pretty well reviewed models of Sony that meet up to your requirements. Both have fast response times and they both take video with audio. One is the Sony N2 Here is a link with info and review :http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/n2.htmlSecond is the Sony T100Here is a link with info and review :http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/sony_t100.htmlPersonally I would go for the N2 because of its larger sensor but then thats a personal preference because on the other hand, the T100 is VERY compact. Here is a link to a site where you can compare image and video quality :http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=1&ma1=32&mo1=&p1=2049&ma2=31&mo2=&p2=1450&ph=5Good luck!

Question : Video from Sony digital camera has watermark on it?
I have a Sony DSC-w290 digital camera. I filmed a short video clip and, when I put the file on my computer, it has a huge watermark right in the middle saying "evaluation copy." It doesn't show up when I view the video on the camera, just on the computer. I ran it thorugh a couple different converters and video players, but it was still there. How do I get rid of it?
Answer:
You pay for the software and the watermark is removed.

Question : i broke my sony camera, should i invest in a new sony digital camera or buy a canon?
i've heard canon brand is better than sony, but since i already have the battery, charger and memory card i was thinking about getting another sony.. so do i buy a Sony camera or go for a Canon?????what's your advice?
Answer:
Tough choice, but think the Canon below would really be the best.Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Please read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.Canon A590IS $134.99 at Best Buy or $116.30 at Amazon.comhttp://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...Camera reports batteries low, but is it low charge or bad electrical contacts? Overcharging can ruin good batteries! The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between batteries and camera. Digital cameras require lots of power. Bad electrical contacts can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but will be viewed as low if contacts are not really good. The LCD screen is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. Bad contacts make cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be severely damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with safety timer, temperature monitor, and trickle charge technology ($9.76) at Walmart. For longer life, use Duracell 2000mAh batteries and a full cycle charge monthly. To preserve battery charge, use the view finder and not the LCD screen when possible. There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera. The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...Lots of great camera tips in these two links. http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=38/10468/6368/333&pq-locale=en_US ...Check this more for the money camera. Just know how to use the one you have.My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic. Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view the owners manual at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/di
